"The promptings of the Holy Ghost will always be sufficient for our needs if we keep to the covenant path. Our path is uphill most days, but the help we receive for the climb is literally divine." --Elaine S. Dalton
A whole "nation" of people without a land... kind of gives new meaning to that story about the naval officer who was convicted of treason and sentenced to never set foot on U.S. soil again, spending the rest of his life on ships because he had no citizenship in any nation...
Where is their country going to be? Notwithstanding what some tribes think, the lands they reside on (the reservations) are not really sovereign nations within the territory of the U.S. They are simply allowed to have their own laws within the framework of U.S. law. What real possible advantage do they think they are going to get by creating their own little Gaza Strip / West Bank type country?
I bet if we end up with someone like Ron Paul as President and something like the Lakota declaring indepence, then a resumption in the Indian wars will occur.

However, if this group wants to be its own nation, then they should; in EVERY way.
I wish our government had the cojones to say:
Okay, that's just fine. You may now pay for to staff and run all of those Indian Health Services clinics where your people get free dental and primary care. No more BIA grants for anything. You'll need to police yourselves, and pay for that yourselves. No more Pell grants for people who aren't American citizens.
Government grants that give preference to high-minority populations (which is pretty much all of them) no longer apply to non-american citizens; so goodbye Alcohol reduction grants, Upward Bound grants, Title VII grants, Head Start grants, etc.
No more government funded water projects. No more government funded low income housing projects.
The idea that this country has not tried its level best to make up for the injustice inflicted upon the native Americans is just ludicrous.
