Tin Man

So did anyone watch the new Sci-Fi channel mini-series Tin Man tonight?

So far it looks pretty interesting. It doesn't have too many similarities to the original Wizard of Oz, but a few.
Cat thinks that it may be one of the better mini-series that the Sci-Fi channel network has put out since Dune.

They've been running ads for it on network TV. It looks really good, but we don't have cable or satellite. :(

2 thumbs down.

It just didn't do it for me. I suppose I was all hyped up and I was dissappointed.

Actually dear, all I said was that this was probably the best quality mini series production they had put out since Dune. Beyond that, it is still a toss up as to whether I like it or not. I'm not sure with all the assumptions and leaps of "faith" the show is asking the audience to make from the original Wizard of Oz story to this interpretation / extrapolation...

If you watch with no expectations on it (or have low expectations) then it's pretty good. I wouldn't say great though. Also, think of it like it's own story and not necessarily based on Wizard of Oz.

That's kind of what I have decided to do.

I tried to, but there was always those little things, that seemed almost incongruous to the continuity of the story, that seemed to be thrown in to tie it back to Frank Baum's story.

I see what you are saying Cat. I guess I just tend to try to take a story/movie for what it is and not try to expect too much. My dh is overly critical of all things creative so I guess I tend to lean the other way.

Here's hoping that tonight's portion is better than last night's! biggrin.gif

(dang it is too bad Jason left the forum... I'm sure he'd agree that the villianous in this mini-series is a fine looking lady! wink.gif Evil -- with as big a Mermaid Man way of saying it -- but definitely fine lookin'...)

we'll get Jase back. I asked him in email and he hinted he would probably mosey on back eventually... He just needs a break. :)

In the meantime, Mermaid man does not say, "Evil" he says, "Eeeeeeeeeevil! Eeeeeeeeevil!"

As an aside, I don't know that he can come back under the original username. The way he chose to leave was to delete his account. I know that on the two occasions when I've had to delete a user it tells me "Are you sure, because this can't be undone."

We could come up with a really cool new username for him, and a rockin' avatar.

Hmmm, something in the zombie style?

too bad you have to work during the first part. we missed the 1st 15 min last night but they replayed it right after. maybe they will do the same tonight and you can watch the 1st hour after...just to see what you miss...you'll already know the outcome.
anyway, I really like how the evil sister didn't turn evil by choice.

I predict there will be a Star Wars-ish finale where DG redeems her sister only to have her die...

Oh, and to do so, she'll have to drop a house on the wicked witch of some direction...

Cat's predictions were a little off. DG does redeem her sister (the sister doesn't die--just scarred for life after having a witch living inside her for half her life) there was no Star Wars type ending, she doesn't drop a house on the witch, but she does melt her.

Oh, and Raw the lion finds his courage, the Tin Man opens up his heart, and Glitch, the scarecrow character finds his brain. Oh, and you find out DG was Dorothy Gale's great grand-daughter.

The ending was a HUGE disappointment. Very contrived. It had alot of potential up until the second hour.

But the EEEEEVIL sorceress / sister was still hot (despite the super plucked eyebrows and layers of makeup and B-52's style hair-do)... rofl.gif

Too many questions / continuity problems just left with no explanation though... like 1. How is it that Dorothy from the original movie made it back and had descendants in OZ; 2. How is it that these descendants developed magical abilities; 3. Does Glitch get his brain put back in; 4. Who the heck is this guy who is DG's and EEEEVIL sorceress / sister's daddy, and why bother even mentioning he came from the Nebraska State Fair if it doesn't have some real bearing on the story; 5. How can there be a huge crypt of family members of DG's ancestors if the Gray Gale (Dorothy from original movie) was the first and is only DG's great-grandmother, and how is it the witch who possessed Az never learned about the crypt in all the years she possessed her; 6. What became of Zero; 7. How did the resistance get through to plant the explosives at the base of the tower when the Long Coats were as thick as pea soup; 8. How come it seemed to take days for DG and her group to travel between places, but EEEEVIL Az and the long coats could get anywhere within minutes on horseback; 9. Why did Az have the exact same expressions on her face after being freed from the witch's possession as she did before; 10. Will everyone in OZ be okay now that Az is no longer possessed, meaning everything is now peachy keen and neither she or anyone else will be prosecuted for war crimes / treason / murder etc.; 11. How is it they did such a poor job of casting young princesses in terms of appearance compared to the adult princesses' appearances; 12. Emerald? What happened to the Ruby Slippers; 13. What the heck does Outer Zone exactly mean and why is it called that, what is it Outer to?

Of course, I do have to admit that I have not read Frank Baum's series of books, so some of these questions may be answered in there, but if so, it is a critical error to assume that fans of the original movie have also read the book(s) it was based upon.

btw, have you ever read the other Oz books? Ozma of Oz and such? They're pretty good, or so I thought so when I was in gradeschool and reading them. Very different sort of book from the Wizard of Oz.

Uh, Ray, was my post too long that you gave up reading before getting to the end?  wink.gif

Smokin Hot Evil Sorceress!!!! Wicked Cool!!! I'd be her flying monkey any day!  That is if I was single, not LDS, and lived in the Outer Zone.

I liked the series.  I thought it was better than some of the other Sci Fi produced mini series they have shown in the past.  The cast was pretty good an the affects weren't bad.  The end felt rushed though but there may have been more that was cut for time constraints.  No real big surprises in the movie but it beat Sci Fi's usual movie fare of Lou Diamond Phillips fighting zombies, warewolves, aliens, etc.  It was pretty benign too so I felt comfortable letting my older kids watch it after viewing the whole thing.  I like how they tied it into the original.  There were plot holes and things that bothered me but it was much better than re-runs on the networks and they eye candy/release the monkey scenes helped keep my interest.biggrin

Ray, convinced me to come back but I shall now be know as the Duke of Mirth!
