PollyAnna, Coco, help?

My husband has just been put on Plaxico, which is, as I understand it, a medication used to treat lupus (it's not for lupus, it's for a scalp condition). Do you know anything about it?

Okay I think he told me wrong, and it might be Plaquenil.

There is no such drug called Plaxico that I'm aware of, but there is Plaquenil. That might be the one you are thinking of.

I know very little about Plaquenil...

It is an anti-malarial drug and I had a seriously adverse reaction to it, during the 3 days that I took it many, many years ago... now they would not give it to me, even without that history... because I have kidney damage and liver damage is one of the "possible" side effects.  Anyway, my problem was that I ended up in the hospital because I became severely enemic, but that is a very rare side effect, from my understanding.

I do know that the medication has a long history and it has helped a huge group of the population to have a life.

I believe it is used extensively in Rheumatoid Arthritis to deal with swelling, inflammation, stiffness, and joint pain. (This is the same reason it is used in Lupus)

Hope that helps.  heart.gif

Good grief Poncho, I totally forgot your expertise. Sheesh. Excuse my airheadedness.

Yes, it's Plaquenil. DH also apparently has low platelets, which from what I'm reading could be a result of taking turmeric supplements. . . but I'm still freaked out. :(

Hey Jen are you sure the doctor put him on Plaquenil? You said he has low-platelets and this drug is not usually prescribed for that. Polly was right, it is an anti-malarial drug. It can be used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. It is used to reduce swelling and to help with joint pain.

I know the drug Plavix is used to treat low platelets and that drug is newer and pretty safe.
Plavix and Plaquenil are not in the same drug family. Anyway, just wondering...

Either way I wouldn't freak out too much. By law every possible side effect that can possibly happen has to be listed. Most of the time the adverse side affects that might be listed are extremely rare. In any event, if he has any side affects that are bothersome to him or to you he should mention it to your doctor. Or better yet, you might ask a pharmacist, because much of the time a pharmacist will be more knowledgable about drug reactions and interactions than anybody else.

It is plaquenil, for a skin condition that might be cutaneous lupus. But he's not allowed to start it yet since his platelets are low. They're rechecking in 2 weeks.

My daughter has been on Plaquenil for over a year now. She's had no adverse reactions to it that we can see. I think it's helped her out a great deal.

Good luck to your husband. thumbsup.gif

Yes, we got her checked about - what was it - 8-10 months into it or something and they checked out perfect. They can really nip any eye problems in the bud if you are diligent with your check-ups.

I used to work for an eye doctor. Took hubby to see him last Friday for a baseline. . .anyway, he'll take good care of him. :) He's got him on a schedule to keep an eye on things (pardon the pun).

Thanks, Coco!
