With Christmas just around the corner I was thinking of my favorite holiday movies/shows that I just have to watch on the T.V. with the family. It just isn't Christmas without them. So here's my list, feel free to share yours.
A Christmas Carol: It just isn't Christmas without Dickens. I'm partial to the Jean Luc Pickard version but the George C Scott one isn't bad either. I also enjoy the Muppet version.
Peanuts Christmas: The original Charlie Brown special is a must. It just isn't Christmas without that pathetic tree and Linus telling the Christmas story.
A Christmas Story: Ralphie is to Christmas as Apple Pie and Baseball are to America. I laugh every time I watch it. It also has the great Nastalgia Factor.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas: Not the movie but the original toon. Just a fun romp with Doctor Sues that brings back good memories.
It's a Wonderful Life: Just a wonderful movie. I especially like this one on Christmas eve.
Elmo Saves Christmas: This movie is funny for adults too. I laugh every time I watch it especially when the tree salesman is trying to sell a coat rack.
Twas the Night Before Christmas: It's a bit cheesy with the mouse sabotaging the clock but I still like it. It was a favorite when I was a kid.
Christmas Vacation: Cousin Eddie is priceless in this classic tale. I can't stand Chevy Chase but love this movie.
Mr. Kruger's Christmas: Classic and Jimmy Stewart. I love hearing the Mo Tab as the background music for this tale. I wish that original album was available in CD.
Those are just a handful of the good ones. I'm sure there are others out there you fancy.
I've never been a White Christmas or Holiday Inn fan. I like hearing Bing sing but it's hard to watch those two for me. I also am not a big fan of Miracle on 34th Street or that horrible Santa Clause movie that came out back in the late 80s.
Patrick Stewart's "A Christmas Carol"... I cry like a baby by the end of it, cuz Stewart's portrayal of Scrooge is very good, not over the top, and it is a very good representation of change and repentance and redemption.
"It's a Wonderful Life"... again I cry like a baby by the end of it, cuz kind of the same reason... and Donna Reed was a gorgeous lady...
"Mr. Krueger's Christmas"... great message and acting (awful fashion and hair styles on everyone but Mr. Krueger that dates it), unfortunately no Donna Reed to play a supporting role to Jimmy Stewart...
"Christmas Vacation"... I am crying from laughing by the end of this one, cuz, well, it is just so darn funny! Love the moose head eggnog cups...
"A Christmas Story"... funny because you just can't beat shooting yer eye out!
Whatever episode of Space Ghost Coast to Coast Poncho and I were watching several years back well after the kids were in bed and we were exhaustedly finishing up wrapping gifts before retiring for the short Christmas Eve / Christmas Morning rest. We were so tired that we just laughed and laughed and laughed at the inanity of that episode. Space Ghost kept on blowing up his guests and the preying mantis guy... I think it was the same night Pres. Hinckley was interviewed by Larry King, cuz we saw that too.

My parents have the soundtrack (err, audio track? It's the whole story,) on vinyl. It is soooo bad.

For some reason the Patrick Stewart version of this classic holiday tale seems more authentic to the story and also it feels more like a 19th century industrial revolution tale. Richard Grant's portrayal of Bob Cratchet is especially believable. Sashkia Reeves does an excellent Mrs. Cratchet as well. The characters feel like period Englishman, even down to their teeth, the props, the mannerisms. The little details make the story so much more engaging. There have been probably over a hundred adaptations of the story but this one seems to engage me the most. It appears that the screenwriter, directors, actors, prop people, set designers, etc all tried very hard to get the real feeling of the Dickens classic to come through in every detail. I especially like the actors who portray Past and Present. In some adaptations they come off looking or sounding stupid.
Of course my favorite part in the Muppet Christmas Carol is when the guy lights the rat's tail on fire!
White Christmas, Charlie Brown, It's a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street. All Musts. Not Christmas without them.
Movies not mentioned are the claymation Little Drummer Boy movies Our family always watches the Living Scriptures Cartoon Nativity movie "A Star is Born"
And you can't forget Elf. That movie just cracks me up!
"The yellow ones don't stop!" "Buddy the elf, what's your favorite color"
ok, so the yellow tights are a LOT a bit disturbing, but the movie is just hilarious!

Cool. I didn't think anyone else would mention "The Nightmare Before Christmas." I was too bashful to mention it myself.
It's really a Halloween movie AND a Christmas movie.
The family and I were headed to the theatre to see the Beverly Hillbilly movie, but noticed that the Nightmare Before Christmas was playing, and got sucked into that instead. We were glad we were.
I noticed that it's a full moon on both Halloween and Christmas Eve. I don't think that that is physically possible, but I forgive them.
Rudolph, Frosty, Charlie Brown, It's a Wonderful Life and the Penguin short on the Madagascar DVD, gotta love militant penguins. Oh yea, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation....ok, maybe not that one, but the scene where the cat lights up is pretty funny.
Christmas favorites are being stacked up on the cocoa table even now!
"Annabelle's Christmas Wish" "Nestor, the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey". "The Little Drummer Boy" "A Charlie Brown Christmas" "Madeline's Christmas" "Jiminy Cricket's Christmas" "White Christmas" "Holiday Inn"
I TOTALLY love "It's a Wonderful Life"! I've seen a couple of remakes of this but the best one is the Frank Capra version with Jimmy Stewart (who reminds me of my Grandpa) and Donna Reed (who reminds me of my mother and her sister just older than her).
Mr. Krueger is always good as is The Nativity movie by the church.
i used to like the bumbles bounce rudolph and the island of broken toys... not sure which one that is... but it was my favorite. All the rest were ...meh...

Well it's gonna be white christmas for us after the BYU game ends in a few minutes. How appropriate on the first truly white day of winter and the first day of Dec.
