Today I took my oldest daughter to work with me, because her class was going on a fieldtrip to see a play done by some acting group called, "High School Musical". My daughter didn't have a good feeling about going. Apparently she has a lot of friends who play the music to this musical all the time, and she doesn't like it. She tends to be very wary of anything that is overly popular (except for Harry Potter, ahem).
We listened to the tail end of "The Great Divorce" by CS. Lewis for lunch and had a nice lunch out.
Anyhow I had one of the most productive days today... all cuz she was sitting silently reading her book in the cubicle next to mine. I wish I could take her with me to work everyday. I'd be a force to be reckoned with...
Anyhow, I think this experience taught me a little bit about myself... I'm always grateful when I learn things in pleasant ways, as opposed to the many unpleasant ways...

I would most likely get nothing done as my kids would not be able to sit still and would grill me on everything that is going on.
What do you do for work, Ray?

I have taken one or two into the office on the weekend on an emergency basis (once I had three or four of them with me), and it was only marginally better than trying to work from home for about 15 minutes...
They get bored just having to sit in an empty cube drawing on scrap paper...

Hoss: Yeah, she made the decision on her own that she didn't want to see High School Musical. That the music was not her thing and that she just didn't want to be a part of it.
I was tempted to go rent the movie, and examine it myself, but then I thought, "You know, people don't HAVE TO see any movie."
And so my wife and I stood behind her on this one, rather than trying to explain to her that the musical is probably inoccuous. I've tried to teach her not to be judgemental of those who enjoy those sorts of things, but at the same time not crush her individual taste.
Especially with my oldest, cuz the oldest so often ends up doing what everyone expects, rather than expressing her own self (at least that's been the case in my experience)...

Well Ray, kudos to your daughter for choosing to spend a day with you at work over seeing the play "High School Musical." Now, if it had been our daughter, our 10 year old, there is no way in h-e-double hockey sticks that she would pass up seeing High School Musical to spend a day at her Dad's work. Yeah, right.
Actually I take that back. She would spend a day with her Dad at work...
Actually, I did take my daughter to work today. My two 1/2 year old. Although I wasn't there to work. I had to pick up a script for her brother. She discovered it was fun to pull the empty vials out and she was eyeing the drugs on the shelves, but didn't touch them. I'm sure she was thinking about all the damage she could cause. We joked about what a "BIG" help she would be.
Oh, and she tried to grab a "handful" of suckers that we give out to kids at the drive-thru.
I remember going to work once with my dad. He talked for days about letting me use the "10-key" pad, as if it would be an exciting privilege. I was not impressed to find out he expected me to do data entry. (I was about 10). However, I got a really neat hamburger for lunch, and dessert! But the food wasn't enough to make me ever want to go to work with him again.
I used to go to work with my dad all the time. He managed a trading post on the Reservation and we lived next door, so I'll pop over and "help" him about once a day. I used to love using the purple ink price stamper. And I liked to hide in stacks of tires in the backroom. And I LOVED looking in the safe when it was open. There were a ton of coins in there. The safe was about the size of a small closet and coins were just piled everywhere. I was a youngster with a fine appreciation of money.
