I like the fact that they said, "Don't try this at home." I guess the next time we get one of our regulars calling the pharmacy wanting to know if the doctor called in their prescription for Vicodin or Darvocet or Lortab, Norco what have you it probably wouldn't be a good idea to tell them to go to their nearest grocery store looking for hot sauce.
All the external pain relievers that I use to deal with my pain issues have some level of Capsicum Annum in them. Here is one small quote:
Chiles For Health While chiles are primarily employed for the zip they add to food, they are also remarkable good for health. In traditional folk medicine, chiles have been used to treat numerous disorders, from arthritis to asthma, colds to constipation, hemorrhoids to high blood pressure, lethargy to lumbago, tonsillitis to toothache. Chiles have been made into decoctions, compresses, tinctures, ointments, etc. As researchers delve into chiles and their heat components the capsaicinoids, their studies show that many of the traditional folk uses of chiles as medicines can be understood by modern scientific means. I am not at all loony about this kind of treatment... however I also do not completely discount many medicinal options (unless it is touted as a "cure all"). I believe we know a lot less than we think we do... about a LOT of things.
There is a lady that works w/us who is always telling us about her grandma's healing remedies- so I will tell her about this one, she will enjoy hearing about it.
One of her grandma's suggestions for a stiff neck: wrap a old dirty sock around your neck. Then you will turn your head from side to side in an attempt to move your nose away from the smell of the sock.
Poncho, I imagine that it would be easier for you to go home with a bottle of hot sauce than it would be for you to go home with one of your own prescriptions. I imagine that you have to be extra careful every step of the way when filling one of your own prescriptions, just to make it absolutely clear that you're not just bringing drugs home with you.

Actually I have no problems filling drugs for myself or any member of the family. I've never had to worry about being "extra careful." I suppose I should. But, ultimately whether I type the prescription, process it through insurance or count the pills the script still has to pass by the pharmacist. I think it's also because the pharmacists I work with know my profile and my family's profile and history pretty well and our doctors, so any script that we fill is not likely to be questioned.
We also have a few safeguards in place in our computer system to make sure you are filling the correct drug for the correct prescription and not just throwing any old pill in the bottle. It's not a perfect system but it helps alot.
To be honest there have been times when I have thought how easy it would be for someone who was dishonest who might be working there to pocket a few pills here and there, or even fake a prescription. I am authorized to take doctor call-in prescriptions. So I "write" prescriptions out on our store's prescription pad. But, if someone were calculating enough and dishonest enough they could easily write out a prescription for themselves and some pharmacists would be stupid enough to fill it. Now, I would never take a doctor call for myself or a member of my family, I'd have someone else do it, but some pharmacists wouldn't have a problem with it.
Although for any prescription for a narcotic, only the pharmacist can actually fill the prescription and has direct access to the drugs. I can type a prescription for a narcotic but I can't actually handle the drug and fill it. It is also illegal for a doctor to "call in" a prescription for a narcotic or to even put refills on them.
