RE: Topics that annoy...

How many talks do ya'll get that say we should use "thee, thou, etc" in prayers?  I remember one talk in GC from Elder Oaks (I think) that taught that.  But otherwise, I don't believe I've heard anyone in local or GC say that.  Heck, I think just praying regularly should be the message...use whatever language is most comfortable.

I haven't heard anything on using "thee, thou, etc." in quite a while. Thus, I think it be of little import to leadership these days. I agree that it seems the emphasis should be on regular prayer and not making it a complicated process.

Gracious, Malo, Wer Dunkin Donuts, all over the world tender voices hear. Some will talk, others scream mercy, oh con the old man out of money. Our Heavenly Father hears them, he understands each one!

Titus: Someday one of your ancestors will probably confess, "Well Willie and Martin just kept bugging me about when to go, so I just made up a fake itinerary. Then I went to the well, got a drink, and before I could tell him it was a fake, they were halfway to Martin's Cove!? How was I supposed to know they were serious? I certainly wasn't going after them! That would've been SUICIDE!"

biggrin

I didn't let the sister missionary get out of the office without giving her the real itinerary.  I'm not that cruel.  biggrin  or am I?  furious  Well, at least that day I wasn't.  innocent.gif

Hoss: Having spoken a Romance Language (italian) we used Tu all the time in prayer. In fact we often used it with people we didn't know very well, and they'd get annoyed with us, but with God it just felt right. I remember my Italian Mission president Giuseppe Pasta (Joe Pasta) was very particular about using lei and loro (which means "you" (informal) and "you all" (informal) but also means "she" and "they"... which could be very confusing, when you suddenly are thinking about some mystery woman (she) or mystery group (they) rather than the message being addressed directly to me (you).

As an english speaker learning Italian, Using Tu always felt more natural, because there wasn't any other real "YOU" due to the confusion that ensued in the Italian... cuz the two words were so similar... I think there's also something nice about having a You that you really really mean You, and far too often on this forum when I say you, I mean the impersonal "you" meaning everybody.

I like thee and thou now that I've had experience with other languages, but honestly, and as a way to show respect to God, I think we probably need more than just that... or we need something... far more often than not, our prayers are far too casual... in our home, I lament the fact that a couple of my children treat prayertime as a though they were talking with Santa Claus.

But, see, your example of using Tu is just the opposite (I think) of what you mean by "respect."  In romance languages, you address God with the same pronouns that you use for dogs and family members.

So there is a whole different feel when you use fancy schmancy English words.

I just think you show proper respect (no matter which pronouns you choose to use) by striving to keep His commandments.

I'm a big substance over style guy.
