I had a health teacher in high school say once that the only purpose for an appendix was to "make doctors' money." If I had a $1.00 for all the times our doctor suspected a possible appendicitis in our kids...
I just helped take one out laproscopically about an hour ago. It was amazing! Before surgery was developed to take them out, the outcome was almost always death. Even today, delay can cause huge problems and long term accomodations in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).
Even when they are taken out, the result can be death.

I thought people had known for a long time what the appendix was for. Isn't it where you put things that aren't directly related to your main text, for reference?
The article ends in a quote that says, "I bet sooner or later we'll discover the same thing about tonsels." But I thought that the already established use for the tonsils was for playing hockey.
