Ever had one? Do you go by one or your real name? Did your parents shorten or change your name or did they always call you by your full first name? Do you nickname your children?

My parents always called me by my first name. I did the same with my first two, but my third ended up with a nickname (modified from his first name) and I did it. I have no idea why.

Red - I have red hair. Red Hen -stemmed from above Megra - what I used to go by online Snickerpoo - luckily only lasted a week People also called me by my maiden name.
Most commonly I was "Red" or "[maiden name]"
I guess now I'm glumirk and Reina (what hubby calls me! )
My mom never believed in having nicknames for her children, but she did call me "Meggie" when I had a phone call and my friends would make fun of me incessantly. *shudders*

We call two of our kids by their middle names. Our oldest daughter and our younger son. I wanted to switch our sons name, because we knew we would call him by his middle name so to avoid confusion, I figured we ought to make it his first name. But, Cat wanted it the way we have it cuz he thought it sounded better. I said, "Well, I'm the one who's going to be filling out the birth certifcate." And he said, "But, I'm the one who will be blessing him." I let him have his way.
My dad gives nicknames to EVERYBODY. My mom has one, he has one, all the dogs have had them, most of the horses, I have one, my siblings.... so yeah, we do nicknames. Quite a few of them have stemmed from the babies not being able to pronounce a name right. Kinda cute, really.

Poncho...he does the blessing...but who filled out the certificate paperwork? I'm guessing he could say whatever he wanted and the paperwork would prevail in Church records. You could always say later that he got nervous and said it backward, but the paper is right.
All of our children have nicknames that start with the "b" sound. That way when we are speaking to them, we just start with a "b.." and add whatever needs to come after. It keeps me from calling them by the wrong name, which I do all the time.

Well, in certain arenas, I go by Dy, but when it comes to my family, BOY do we have nicknames! We have kids that make up their own dang languages, for Pete's sake, so nicknames are 2nd nature. Usually one of the kids (usually one certain brother) starts a naming convention that will stick for a few years until someone comes up with a new convention. E.g., for a while, everyone's name ended with '-er', with some variations. Dyner, Justaner(d), Meganer(d), Jo-joner, To-toner, Holler, Birder, and Ayex. OK, Alex's nick doesn't usually follow the conventions, like the years we called him B'gwanajon. (I don't remember what the convention was then.) Right now the rule is boring, mostly just an -o on the end: Mommo, Daddo, Dyno(Wyno), Justo/JustyWeirdo, Meggo, Jo-lo, Tone-loco, Hollo, Birdwo, and Alex. Alex is on his mission right now so I'm not sure nicks count. And the fact that I live 1750 miles away means I often miss out on the smaller iterations of the names. Sigh.
I hate being called Jenny. My family always has though, I didn't mind it when I was little. Many of them still do, and even though I cringe a little inside every time, it doesn't bug me enough to take a stand on it.
If anyone outside of my family calls me Jenny, I punch them in the face.

Ok, so my parents never nicknamed me. My best friend in high school did, though. I fought it tooth and nail, but she was unstoppable. What she did was to shorten my first name from Cheryl to Chere. (Sounds just like Cher, the singer, which was why I fought it.) I'd protest, but she just kept calling me that. She'd always call me that to other people and pretty soon a LOT of other people were calling me that, too. As much as I tried to stop it, Chere became a really special name to me. A bit of a new identity, it was something that made me stand out. I was impressed that there was something so... worthwhile? about me that someone gave a new name.

All my kids have nick names. I cannot tell you where we got them but they just fit. Growing up I usually was called Jay which is just short for Jason or by my last name by my team mates. In eighth grade one guy started calling me Otis. For some reason he thought it would be a great nick name for me. For a few minutes it annoyed me because Otis was that bafoon toadie for Lex Luthor in the Superman movies. But I embraced it and the name stuck and I became one of the most popular kids in Jr. High because of it. Even some of the teachers started using the nick name. I even used it to win a seat on the student council that year. But the fame only lasted that one year. By the time I got into highschool the next year the name was lost and forgotten by the adoring fans. Such is life.
I didn't have many nicknames. I had a friend who called me "Ream", and I took on a Dungeons and Dragon's personality of "Wizard Ray" for a long while as a teen... and my best bud was Wizard Dan. We were um... well... pretty clueless... Boy! Am I glad I'm no longer clueless... (Har har har).

I got nicknamed Sunshine at Youth Conference one year. (We had to give each other nicknames that we would use the whole conference.) I think that said how badly I wanted to be happy and how good I was at hiding my unhappiness. (I think I'm far closer to being Sunshine these days then I was during my teen years.)
