"She said she initially avoided her husband, hiding in her mother's bedroom. She testified she finally had sex several weeks into her marriage after Steed told her "it was time to be a wife and do your duty." "
Hmm.... "Do your duty." Where have I heard that before?
Oh, yeah!

Duty your duty with a heart full of song!

Warren Jeffs gives me the creeps. Making someone marry their own cousin, even if they weren't 14 and were of consenting age, is creepy. HUGE eeeeewww factor. Maybe he'll get a dose of his own medicine in prison.
Oh, I dunno. There's some dude on this forum who actually had *feelings* for some of his cousins... he confessed to us all a while back. Maybe he'll step up and make a comment...

It wasn't me, but I tried to kiss a cousin once. I was eight. He was sooo cute, I remember thinking. LOL. I got a lecture on the inappropriateness of marrying cousins, so don't worry. I'm all straightened out now.

I had a crush on a cousin when I was about 8 too. He was about 23 though and thought I as a pain in the behind. So I'd stalk him while we were at family reunions, hee!
obviously...I was young and naive. thankfully he wasn't a creep!
Amen. It's people like Warren Jeffs that give the true Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints a bad name. There's some people who don't differentiate.
I'm happy because some creep is going to be taken out of the picture (to some extent--I'm sure he'll still have influence while in jail) and not prey on innocents anymore. Those poor kids that suffered because of his actions....the rapes and abandonments.....those kids will suffer a life sentence while he gets to languish in a comfortable jail thanks to the taxpayers.

Yeah, I thought of that too, but wouldn't you do that with Pres Hinckley if he were in the same position of being falsely accused and convicted?
No matter what we think and know, many of those people (I won't say all, because I'm sure some of them know exactly what they are doing) truly believe him to be a prophet and that they are doing God's will. It is those people that I feel sorry for. To have such faith in something that is so false. Mmmm, I'm sure that's how some of my friends feel about me and my Mormon faith....

I was also thinking the exact same thing. It's interesting how the same event can convince some of his true status as their prophet, and others are convinced he's a whack and deserved this fractional amount of justice he's receiving.
Almost like we *choose* what to believe... not so much what absolute Truth actually is.

His followers will be comparing him to Joseph Smith though in Carthage or Liberty which just turns my stomach.
Do you really think so? Maybe some of his diehard followers, but based on what I've read in the news, I think it is more likely the bulk of the people in that church follow him out of fear more than anything else. It seems to be if you disagree with him or are in any way perceived as a threat, you're outta der. And they are so isolated culturally from the rest of the world and pretty much have been for several generations, that fear of the unknown plays a big role in keeping people under control. And that whole scenario (fear and ignorance as percieved by the outside) is what seems to cause more image problem for us as a people and Church than the mere fact some of our ancestors practiced polygamy as part of the observance of our religion. The uninformed and those who chose to leave their brains in the shipping container don't bother to understand that we in the LDS church are not culturally isolated or isolationists and are not co-erced into doing anything within our religion.

Those who are working on "faith" as opposed to knowledge (a la Joseph Smith or Moses or Nephi, etc.) choose what to believe. They hope. They decide. But they don't yet "know" what they are doing is true. That's what I meant. Once we have knowledge, our faith becomes dormant.

I'm glad he failed. I really want him to get a prison fiancee!
While his crimes are truly horrible, I can't honestly wish a fate like that on anyone.
