RE: Edited out emoticon in Crabby thread

I've been away a couple of days and was shocked to see all this discussion about an emoticon I used. I am sorry if Arbilad or others found it offensive. I'm sorry I didn't understand that it was a euphemism for something else. I do wish that he had PM me first and given me the opportunity to self-edit. I also wish there was something posted and concrete indicating what is considered to be offensive. I find it interesting that everyone assumes that everyone else knows what offends them and why.

If the consensus is PMs, we can do that in the future. When we started this forum the emphasis was on doing absolutely everything publicly. Experience, I think, has shown that to be the wrong path. So I'm sorry if I caused hurt by posting about it publicly. But in this case I think the discussion of emoticons has been helpful. It could certainly have taken place in absence of a moderation action, though.
Who has been assuming that others know what is offensive to them? I was nearly certain earlier, and am certain now that you posted, that you intended absolutely nothing negative by your use of that emoticon, and were not aware that it could be offensive.

Poncho, I'm sure none of us thought you meant to be offensive. I knew you didn't intend to be.

Entire Post Edited:  Post removed to avoid potential flare up of hostility and contentious feelings (as evidenced by the below reactions Jen and beefche gave within minutes of my posting).

If anyone is really interested in the comment and will agree to look at it objectively, you are welcome to read it at my blog.

No, don't worry, it is not a slamfest against the forum or anyone in the forum.  I am stating things frankly from my perspective, and I think some of it may have some value to you all.

Holy cow. So an emoticon was used that has previously been the cause of some moderation. Arbi removed it. He didn't mention who had used it, or even the emoticon, until it was pulled out of him because people wanted to know what not to use in the future. And WHO is making mountains out of molehills? Good gravy.

And if you had been trying to take sabbatical from this forum, why would you take issue with Arbi moderating? Someone has to do it, and if you don't have the time or desire to do so right now, that's absolutely fine. But I really, really think it's unfair and out of line to jump all over Arbi for doing so.

No one wants you to feel bad for an innocent mistake, Poncho. I was just hoping we could automate the process of cleaning that particular mistake up. You aren't the first one to do it. And I imagine that you won't be the last, and in such a case, rather than posting an announcement bout the modification, which tends to create a recurring discussion on a rather abominable subject, it's probably better to just do a little discrete pruning in this instance. If a PM were involved you could post a link to this thread, and actual discussion could occur here in the case that it was appropriate.

Now maybe this is one of those opening the floodgates of power abuse and the evils of oppressive moderation... which we all hate... and if that's the case, then you belong in a third party where absolutes and ideals are more important than practicality... err... I mean... sorry... got sidetracked there for a second...

Please go to Arbi's thread and vote for what solution you think is appropriate. Arbi's moderation of offtopic discussions in this particular forum, likewise has a rather lengthy history... I've been modded many a time... (proudly)... It keeps the threads in this particular arena more efficiently focused on the job of moderation.

--Ray

PS> I respect both opinions in this. I think most people have a hard time understanding why someone like Cat might think it's important to keep the moderation democratic, but understanding knowing from whence he came and the poor treatment he received elsewhere, I think folks should give him a break... and everyone else for that matter...

Poncho... you should not feel bad...

It it helps... I made the same mistake in another forum a few months ago, except mine was a "typo"... I meant to type "bugged me" and typed the frist word wrong........  I was REALLY embarrassed by THAT boo boo...  But fortunately the person that pointed out my mistake knew... (as we did in your use of the emoticon in question...) that I didn't mean "that" idea...  shocked.gif

I didn't feel bad. As I said earlier I was just kind of shocked that I came back after a couple of days and saw that my post had been edited and there was a whole thread talking about the use of that particular emoticon and that it had been deemed "inappropriate" and I had no idea.
I just would have liked the opportunity to self-edit that's all. I certainly don't want to offend anyone.
I know I'm not the first one to do it (and BTW I don't think I used the same emoticon as Coco)
and as Ray pointed out, I probably won't be the last.
Maybe it isn't my place to say this but if Arbi felt the need to edit my post that would have been fine. He could have just let me know privately why he felt the need to do that. If he knew it was an innocent mistake on my part, then I'm just a little confused as to why there was a whole thread started discussing it.

What some people find offensive others may not so that's why it is all very subjective...
