I would suspect somewhere between the latter two if this reflects croneyism and entrenchment of a movement that is perhaps only freedom facing at face value.

Putin is well respected in Russia. There are people who, if Putin said that the sun would rise in the North tomorrow, they'd look North for the sun to appear. And then, when it appeared in the East, as usual, they'd assume that they'd gotten their directions mixed up and that what they thought was East was really North.
