Looks like it started out as some kind of building... then he didn't know what to do with it... Yeah, the whole thing is kinda' overboard, I think. BUT... I can sort of see school employees being a little paranoid with the possibilities... I mean, some of the shootings have really been shocking to all of us. I don't know...

This such bull. I played war with my friends at school on the playground. Played various combat roleplaying games in high school, had the books there, Twilight 2000, D&D, etc. No one killed anyone. Kids in the 50s and 60s sometimes in the rural areas had guns in their cars, even high school lockers, schools even had shooting clubs. No one went on a rampage.
This is all crap, parents not being responsbile and groups like libs and the NEA and the state trying to assert control over your kids.
Any more, government and the edumacation system are just evil.

I think that, in most cases, "zero tolerance" policies are "zero intelligence" policies. I don't truly believe that this kid was in any way a threat. If those at the school honestly did, then they need to lose their jobs because they are piss poor at threat evaluation.

Kid gets suspended for drawing what might be a ray gun off of star trek but if he was bullying another child he probably be tollerated because he had self esteem issues. Some educators today are just big weenies! Get real.
This runs along the lines of paranoia not zero tolerance. I agree with Coco the picture started out looking like a building. My teenage daughter thought it looked like a school bus. If they were that concerned about it, (which I don't think they should have been) they should have at least talked to the kid and asked him why he drew it before automatically suspending him. How does a drawing "pose a threat?" Sheesh.
I used to carry a pocket knife with me all the time (and gasp, yes, even in junior and senior high AND at BYU)... but, when the zero tolerance / zero intelligence policies started making it into the business world, I felt compelled to stop because I didn't want to risk losing my job for carrying a contraband pocket knife on my person or in the car. I think my brother even eventually stopped carrying his pocket knife for the same reason (we are both employed by the same company).
Now, as a result of all that PC crap, I often have to search 1/2 hour or more just to find my swiss army pocket knife for a Scout campout...
(Oh, and speaking of finding things, Poncho finally found my Scout Handbook on Monday... exactly two weeks after Scout Camp started. And guess what, it was in a book case that the two of us had each examined probably two or three times a piece while I was getting stuff together for camp. )

today i was walking the streets of Seattle. We walked around a block. There were all sorts of unseemly sights, including piles of beercans in the streets and such... then we passed an elementary school. There was a big sign restating that "This is a Alcohol, Drug and Weapon Free zone."
I laughed and said to my coworker, "I always thought those signs were ridiculous, like 'no duh!' but now that I see this neighborhood, I see why they're necessary."

Ray, I envy you. I wish I could go to Seatle, Haven't been in nearly 14 years. I love the farmer's market and there were a lot less crazies than I was used to seeing in San Francisco. Maybe because it was raining.
