Healthy Accountability

My husband has nothing to lose. He still weighs the same as when he was in high school. smile.gif

Hey. That wasn't supposed to be a smiley face earlier. It was supposed to be more of a grimace since he's no help at all. :P

In HS, at his HIGHEST weight hubby weighed 177. He was 6'4"... He was TOO skinny at 165 when we met and got married... I put a few pounds on him... but for my money, he's never been pudgy... This year he turns 55 (36 years out of HS Euph...) and he weighs exactly 11 lbs more than he did at his peak back then... He looks much better with a little more meat in him... he is still pretty thin...

All of my children (especially Son2) inherited HIS metabolism... Son1 is 6'5" 200, Daughter 5'10" 135, Son2 6'1" 145... I am happy for them... Nevertheless, I was always shapely, not exactly thin... but never really heavy, even during my kid years... until I got sick and started spending so much time on my butt! When I get to heaven I believe Heavenly Father is going to let me run, skip, hop and jump FOR DAYS!!!

If you CAN exercise... if your muscles and nerves work properly to allow you to participate in this amazing thing called exercise... ESPECIALLY if you can do it without major pain... do yourself a favor and get active... I am not a huge advocate of diets... but I believe in eating things as close to their natural state as you can...

Please, take if from someone that took healthy muscles for granted until she lost the ability to walk due to damage to some major muscle groups... When I had to retrain a different set of muscle to enable my legs to walk... THEN I understood just exactly what I had been taking for granted!!!

I'm sorry... It sorta' come out that way... but I didn't mean to guilt everyone...

I just wanted to remind those that don't see physical exertion as a blessing... that it really is... I never thought it was... I saw it as a chore... and to some extent I still do... but when I was younger I loved to camp, hike and be goofy playing with my kids... flying kites, playing catch, chasing the dog together... etc... Now all those kinds of activities are beyond me... So even if you do not want to formally exercise... which I am not trying to guilt anyone into... I encourage those that can, to be physically active and do "active" things... Really what I wanted to say is; don't waste ALL your time in front of the TV... take your kids on a bike ride or walk through the neighborhood... play frizbee... ANYTHING that gets you moving...

Honestly your body (and your kids) will thank you...

Ok, I'm coming back here after a long week of vacation where I didn't focus on my food or exercise. It was a nice break, but I did get that "out of control" feeling by the end about my eating. I'll be heading to the gym first thing tomorrow morning and then I'll come set (or reset) my health goals. Also, I'll report the damage I see on the scale. How is everyone else doing with their health goals?

Ok, my efforts to "jump right back into it" at the gym weren't a complete success. I only did half my time on the treadmill before needing to stop because of shin pain. I'll go back tonight to finish up. I might have to stick to hiking on the treadmill for a few sessions before I bring back the jogging intervals.

The good news is that I weigh the same today as I did before my vacation. Also, I made use of one of those in-store blood pressure machines while on vacation. My blood pressure and heart rate are both down from a couple months ago. I was 99 over 52 with a hr of 75. My resting hr used to be 80, so 75 while strolling around shopping is really good. I'll be confirming these results at my usual drugstore machine next time I go there.

I'm not sure about all my exact goals for this week. I will get 120 ounces of water daily. I'll journal my food. I will do my 2 strength training sessions and 4 cardio sessions. By the end of the week I'd like to be back to my previous eating and cardio goals. (1500 cal, 125 grams of protein daily and 30 minute cardio with four 2 minute jogging intervals.) I'll keep you guys posted.

I just really feel like I need to detox a bit. I'm hoping that getting back to my normal water intake & healthier eating will take care of this feeling within the next couple of days.

It's been awhile since I updated my goals and I have some significant changes to how I'm doing things, so I thought I'd better.

My food goals have changed, though the way I'm eating hasn't changed very much. I'm dropping food journaling for the time being. I am cooking and trying new recipes and making up new recipes. It takes time to research the calories and protein and fiber of a meal that I know is perfectly healthy just so I can have my numbers add up right. I think journaling has served it's purpose well up til now, but I simply do not have time or energy to devote to it right now. I feel good about dropping journaling and not good in that I'm-getting-away-with-something type of good. I'll still be very aware of what I'm eating, but not eating to make the numbers add up. It was very good to be so disciplined while I was figured out how and what I needed to eat. Now I have the opportunity to listen to the cues from my body more. (And I wouldn't have trusted them until recently, because I was used to way too much and lower quality food.) I may do occasional spot checks to make sure I'm doing okay. Ditto with the water. I'd still like to be drinking around 120 ounces per day, but I'm not going to be so focused on exactness.

I've recently become interested in running a 5k. (As I typed that I still want to look around and see who said that, because it couldn't have been me. I don't run. I have bad knees.) Funny thing, that. I have been exercising all this time without knee problems. I've started jogging intervals and no knee problems. The shins sometimes let me know it's time to moderate, but my knees have been fine. I blame it on the strength training. wink I started the Couch-to-5k training plan today. I've switched from jogging to running. And even after my first baby step day of running I know something new. Runner's high is real. I can't stop smiling.

I'm going to leave my strength training sessions as I previously had them. I'm working towards more weight as I can. I'm seeing more gains in some areas than others. For example, with the two hip abductor machines I've gone from about 75 pounds to 125, 130, but there's an arm one where I can still only do 15 pounds.

I'm down 37 pounds. I will be so excited when I cross that 40 pound mark (and halfway point.)

Happy, healthy wishes to everyone!

Ok, I need help from the runners among us. My shins are hurting when I run. I'm very new to running and don't want to do myself any damage. Could you point me to any good information about this? So far they are only hurting while I run and not after, so I doubt it's shin splints yet, but it could head that way easily.

If you just started running it could be because your legs and shins haven't adjusted. Make sure you do stretches before you run. If it continues you might ease off and try something else or mention it to a doctor.
There was one summer I went jogging regularly with my roommate and I remember my shins hurting too.

Here's a good one. School just started right? We live a block and a half from the school. The school is located on a very busy main road and we are right in the entrance of the subdivision.
The congestion and traffic at the school is ridiculous. Cars everywhere! Parents don't pay attention to safety much and are rude to each other trying to beat each other to pick up their kid or drop them off first etc. Our children walk of course, and then I go walk to pick up my kindergartner.
The principal mentioned that the problem would be lightened if more parents would allow their children to walk. He said the responses he gets is "But, it is unsafe because of all the cars and traffic." He said, "Yeah, and look who is in those cars, it is other parents driving their kids too when they could be walking!"

Even the crossing card who is an adult told me yesterday that even when she holds up her stop sign to cross children and/or parents there are cars who try to speed up and get through so they don't have to stop for what? Maybe 30 seconds.

If those parents are so worried about their children walking, maybe they should try walking with them. I know it has felt good to do the little bit of walking I've done the last couple of days.

I ran crosscountry and long distance track in highschool and continue to run today. Be sure to check your shoes. Most running shoes are made overseas and sometimes they don't glue them together right so they put torque on your ankles and shins. Make sure they have a decent cushion. Some people run on shoes that are ten years old and the shock absorbing characteristics of the shoes are shot. Sometimes peoples feet are flat or have arch problems that can cause them to run on the instep instead of the outside edge. Try to avoid running on hard surfaces such as concrete. Instead run on grass or dirt if possible. Do a good warm up and stretching too. I have knee pain sometimes and find that walking briskly before running warms them up enough to prevent the pain. Hope this helps.

Ok, thanks for the ideas. I think my shoes are okay... I warm up well, but could do more stretching. My big problem might be form. My legs are a bit differently shaped than normal. I have self-corrected my walking gait, but I bet I'm doing it all wrong when it comes to running. There's probably no help for it except to see someone about it.

I am going to try stretching a lot more to see if that helps first, though.

I took the kids to the Desert Museum this morning...walking around for 2 1/2 hours carrying at least one child and/or pushing a stroller at all times... It was only in the low 90's, so we had to celebrate. wink.gif

No, I really need to get back on my gym rotation. See, it's just that they changed things on me...and now I have to call a different place to reserve kids' time, and stuff.... I just got out of the habit. How about this...I'll try to call in the morning and go exercise sometime tomorrow...

My DH starts buying Halloween candy when they put it out in mid-September. His reasoning? "Well, you have to start buying now so there's enough left by the time Halloween comes!" I pointed out that if you buy it on Halloween, it's got a better chance of being there than buying the candy 6 weeks early. No dice. Yesterday I finished off the Twix bars. Today, it's a toss-up between Milky Way and Reeses' PB Cups.

Yep, I'm gaining.

Yeah, I'm trying to deicde how to handle the halloween candy angle this year. I might just have MrHic buy the candy and have him put it somewhere without my knowledge. I just don't need that kind of temptation.
