I love food. It's like my second favorite thing to talk about.
So... what are ya'll eating lately?
Today for lunch I had 1/2 of a Juan Canary melon. Never even heard of one before today. They were selling exotic melons at the grocery store, so the ones I'd never heard of I bought. Also got a Crenshaw and a Casaba. Actually I've heard of those but I can't remember if I've knowingly eaten them before.
Simmering on the stove is spaghetti sauce made with pork/bacon sausage, the holy trinity (onions, green peppers and celery) and zuchinni.
So come on, people, make my mouth water!

I'm going to go raid my fridge. I'm behind on calories and I need something to eat. One of my favorites is to roast garlic, onion, zucchini, carrots, broccoli and yellow squash under the broiler until they get some black bits. (I used to coat them in olive oil, but now I use olive oil spray.) Pull 'em out. Add some Canadian Steak Seasoning. Yum.

Yea, right Roper, and I made diamonds last night. Everyone knows that you can't make caramel, just like you can't make chocolate milk. Chocolate milk comes from chocolate cows and caramel comes from candy land.
Mmm this evening for dinner I had 2 nectarines and a bunch of strawberries dipped in leftover cream topping from my sister's wedding. Oh man they were soooooo good I'm gonna be sick.
My wife has been making a lot of chocolate chip zuchini bread. Only way the kids will eat zuchini.
Sunday, I grilled ribeyes marinated in Montreal Steak Seasoning, rubbed potatoes with olive oil and kosher salt and baked them, fresh green beans/garlic/olive oil/kosher salt all in several layers foil and thrown on the grill, sauteed candy onions in butter. For dessert later I made virgin pina coladas with whipped cream.

Okay, this is the deal. I need some yumm-o good recipes for the crockpot that are cheap. We're talking like pasta, potatoes, you know - the cheap food. We're prob. going to rent a house for vacation next year and I want to do the crockpot so we'll come home to dinner instead of eating out for dinners which really gets expensive...
I will experiment with the recipes over the winter...
And I thought I'd come to bountiful to get a good start...

Get a cheap cut of meat and marinate it in the refrigerator overnight.
Put a cup of bouillon in the bottom of the crockpot. Cut up carrots, potatos, and onions and stick them in. Put the meat on top then put on the lid and cook for about 4 hours.
All the marinade and juice from the meat will drip down and help flavor the rest.
That's pretty much our standard Sunday meal--we come home from church and the house smells wonderful.
Sometimes we splurge and get an already lemon-pepper marinated pork loin. That's really yummy and tender.

I had several recipes typed up in a response for you when my son pulled the plug on the computer. I'll get them again tomorrow if I feel inclined and benevolent.
Oh, dear, Euph. That's most frustrating. Please let Euph retype them all for me...
That sounds good, roper, but I should've said this dinner must be in the crockpot more like 10-12 hours, as we'll be leaving for "vacation stuff" all day and then coming back to the rental.

Here's a chili stew I made yesterday - quite tasty.
1/2 pound Jimmy Dean hot sausage (or a pound if you like meat) garlic 1 chopped onion 1 chopped green pepper 3 ribs chopped celery
Brown all this stuff. Then...
Put into pot and add 2 cans diced tomatoes, 1 can black beans and 1 can kidney beans, around a teaspoon of cumin and the same of chili powder. Leave on stove simmering, till it's time to eat. (Around 3 hours, but I think this could be a crockpot thing, too.)

Summer food? Hello?...Sweet, sweet corn and home-grown tomatos!
A bit of watermelon - or as we call it - waterlemon. meat on the grill (any kind will work but out favorites are chicken marinated with soy sauce, sprite and anything else that is hanging out in your fridge door; steak, of course; brats{not the neighbors kids but sausages}; coconut-curry chicken kabobs; and garlic tenderloin with thai-peanut dipping sauce {which is just peanut-butter, soy, vinegar, etc}
But, Lobster will work in a pinch

I've been trying to think of something for you. Cat and I were invited to a Lobster fest party in a couple of weeks? Does that reach out and grab you?
Speaking of which, have you RSVP'd yet, dear? Let's not make the same mistake as we did with that wedding dinner reception back several weeks ago... I don't think the hostess wants us to feel left out like last year when her inviting committee forgot to include us on the preferred guest list... We'll have to figure out where to come up with the $40... they had just better some good size lobsters for $20 a pop...

Wait! You were "invited" to a party and you have to pay for dinner?
Yeah... go figure. Plus, the rest of it is potluck so we have to bring something else to eat... But hey, we get to go to the people's house and get ignored in the conversations because we aren't in the same part of the ward and so don't live in the same neighborhood and our kids don't go to the same schools...
We have some folks with interesting ideas of what is considered socially acceptable in our well-to-do ward. We also have a lot of folks in the ward where $40 would be a typical Friday night dinner/date out for the couple. Anyway, the interesting "socially acceptable" train of though also includes you can't have an open house for someone going off to college or a mission or a "core" family moving out of the ward without it turning into a RS catering function. And, you can't hold a ward picnic at the free city park that is within the ward boundaries, it has to be held at a county metropark that is well outside the ward boundaries, nearly 20 minutes away and costs $7 / car to get into for the day (which amounts to a couple hours really) for the privilege of sitting at some picnic tables eating potluck... not like this is impossible to do in town...
Well, I say that since I doubt one lobster will provide more than a bit of taste of the giant aqautic cockroach (yes, I see how "big" they are in the local grocery stores around here), they best have a grill a goin' cuz I gonna want sum surf n turf... I'll bring me a nice ole hunk a bovine flesh to fill me up...
