Guess what I just heard

Remember this thread?  I just heard a news report that said the govt believes there is a very real threat of an attack on US soil this summer.

Most interesting.  Here's a link to ksl.com where they interview a guy from ABC news about it.  Scroll down 3/4 the way down the page to Al-Queda's Latest Threat.

If they are smart, they won't do it. They are winning the war right now, by wearing down public and political support for the Iraq campaign. If they attack us here at home, they will galvanize support for the war again.

Isn't it a shame that a post to that thread, mocking the subject of it, was the very thing that drove Convert off the board? We may or may not agree with the subject of other people's threads, but mocking should have no place on this board.

So that is going to be brought up again? weirdface.gif Which post was it that was the mocking post that drove her away? As some of the rest of us said at the time, she came here with an agenda to convert the rest of us to her viewpoint, and when that looked to be unlikely, left in a huff. As I see it, the only things that prevent anyone from leaving this forum is their individual practicing of tolerance for differing opinions, not taking themself to seriously, and giving others the benefit of the doubt.

As to a heightened risk this summer... tchja!  It is the terrorist's pattern...  From the AP article attached to the link

On Tuesday, Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff told the editorial board of The Chicago Tribune that he had a "gut feeling" about a new period of increased risk.

He based his assessment on earlier patterns of terrorists in Europe and intelligence he would not disclose.

"Summertime seems to be appealing to them," Chertoff said in his discussion with the newspaper about terrorists. "We worry that they are rebuilding their activities."

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that if an attack occurs or is attempted outside the middle east, the risk probability goes up for everyone else on their target list as well...

The fact that sleeper cells were found and rooted out years ago here in the U.S. should cause us no surprise that the terrorists are working on rebuilding their sleeper cell network here in order to cause their mayhem...

she came here with an agenda to convert the rest of us to her viewpoint,

Let's examine that assertion, shall we? Out of 50 posts she made, only 23 (46%) were even vaguely politically related. That's not bad for a board that actively encourages political discussion. Of those political posts, only 13 (26%) were directly related to the two threads that were causing ire. Of those, 9 (18%) were directly related to the thread where she was predicting exactly what this article is predicting. So, the largest number of posts she made on a single subject were related to presenting us with a bit of information that is now corroborated by another source. That seems like a public service to me.
At any rate, 26% of posts on two related but different topics hardly seems like an agenda to me. I've seen agenda posters - they manage somehow to twist every single topic into their pet topic and harp on it. From her post count, it is very clear that is not what she did.
If someone like her comes here in the future, then I hope that we will show them greater love than was shown her.

All you need is love, all you need is love,
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.
All you need is love (all together now)
All you need is love (everybody)
All you need is love, love, love is all you need.

Wow! Who woulda guessed that John/Paul/George/Ringo were singing about Bountiful?

Stats are fun, and not attempting to argue, so let's also look at the qualitative side of her first round of posts since we have looked at the quantitative approach...

First post 5/22 (in the discussion of if we are at the point the Nephites were in Helaman 5) in response to something coco said is
'I can quit when the Lord takes over and tells me I've done all I can do.  Until then, I will do all I can to perserve and protect the land he gave me and mine.  Its a valuable gift after all.'

Her first post, also on 5/22, in the "Mitt Romney is Such a Poser and Sell Out" thread.  'IF the Constitution is to prevail it will be because of the Elders of Israel.'

Then, later on the same thread on 5/24

'Sincere apologies arbilad, hearsay was not the correct word. I wish you well. Ron Paul is spot on in many of the things he has spoken of. Unfortunately the citizens of this great country aren't ready to embrace it.'
Back to 5/22 on "Republican Party's Death Wish", a telling but subtle reference

'AQ has been sneaking in and linking up with MS13 and Aryan Nation members, making arrangement for arms deals.

This stinks to high heaven. One has to wonder the IQ level on Capital Hill. If not that, then what do they have up their sleeve. SPP perhaps?'

She kept a pretty low profile until 5/31 when she started the "Taking a Head Count" thread and started taking part in "Maybe I'm Just Paranoid" thread.   And then, when folks started asking for backup to her assertions or took contrarian positions to her opinions, she got defensive and offended and left rather than ostensibly trying to see it from other folks point of view.  And then, we as moderators had that little row behind the scenes... wink.gif

What I find interesting is the phenomena that if events ever do end up occuring that somehow even remotely are similar to what is predicted in a worst case scenario prediction or by a doomsayer, it is clearly touted as "See!  I told ya so!" whereas when it actual events do not, nothing is said and it is quickly forgotten...  It isn't just politics, but pretty much anything, and we all do it (yes, me and the mouse in my pocket too.  wink.gifbiggrin.gif

Shout
Shout
Let it all out
These are the things I can do without
Come on
I'm talking to you
Come on

In violent times
You shouldn't have to sell your soul
In black and white
They really really ought to know
Those one track minds
That took you for a working boy
Kiss them goodbye
You shouldn't have to jump for joy

Er... wait, Tears for Fears isn't very loving-able is it?  wink.gif

There is freedom within,
There is freedom without,
Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup

There's a battle ahead,
Many battles are lost,
But you'll never see the end of the road
while you're travelling with me

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in

They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win

Now I'm towing my car, there's a hole in the roof
My possessions are causing me suspicion but there's no proof
In the paper today tales of war and of waste
But you turn right over to the T.V. page

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in

They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't win

Now I'm walking again to the beat of a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only the shadows ahead barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and relief

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in

They come, they come
To build a wall between us
Don't ever let them win.

Hmmm... I guess Crowded House isn't too loving-able either.  But, it sure made a great slow dance song!  wink.gif

If the Fab Four was singing about Bountiful, then Tears for Fears and Crowded House musta been too!  rofl.gif

Okay, I'll shut up... just kind of bored today... and Cat Herders and boredom don't a good situation make... devilish.gif

Oy! I don't see the new threats rising to the levels of or in the same manner of those brought up in the thread bokbadok linked started by Convert. Where's the relation? No one disputed the Al Qaeda threat here in the US and they've probably had cells or members here continuously even after 9/11.

Whatever.  I'm taking inventory and rounding out my storage anyway.  With food prices going up like crazy, better now than later anyway.  But you can come to my house for gruel after armageddon starts, Cat. chew.gif

Cat, don't take her up on that offer! She'll put you to work moving large rocks out of her garden, have you hauling water from the nearest river, etc.

Thanks for the invite, bok! Wow! What a great day this is turning out to be! I have invited myself over to Val's to play swords with him and his beserker warrior sons and now I get to go to your house for some tastey gruel after we're done playing! w00t.gifrofl.gif

Hey, speaking of inventory and food storage, I read today that popcorn prices are going up like 40% because of the ethanol demand. That means it is gonna cost another arm and leg to go to the movies and buy popcorn soon.

Soooo.... I was thinkifying... I wonders if one can buy bulk popcorn from some of these places folks buy their food storage from. Not only could it be good in a crisis, but could end up being a wise hedge investment... he who has popcorn stored can use it as leverage as a valuable commodity for trading as everyone is still gonna want to have popcorn even after society falls apart and we're turned into tribes as portrayed on that hit TV series Jericho... wink.gif

But seriously, was wondering about maybe adding some bulk popcorn to the food storage (you know, would still be a worthwhile thing to have beyond the basics, and where one would get it...)

Hmmm...  I'll have to defer to Mrs. Cat if Bok has some ulterior motivationals there...  sounds like a reverse harem thing... or worse yet, she and dilbert haven't had hometeachers in a while!  jawdrop.gif    imslow.gif   biggrin.gif

Absolutely.  They sell it by the bucket.  And if you have the right mill, you can grind it for cornmeal.

Let me guess... you can then use it for (are you ready for this? wink.gif)...

Spoiler

Yeah, I'm still irked that convert left, too. IRKED, I say!!

I didn't find her defensive at all. I think there were others she was performing mental gymnastics around who started to feel insecure in their own cerebral potency.

That is all.
