After reading this article, if I wasn't an honest person, I'd be off to Home Depot to five finger discount some items. Apparently the workers fired didn't even physically detain or touch the shoplifters. Some of them were even given commendations before they were fired. It just doesn't make any sense.

That is terrible. I can respect if their concern is the safety of the employees- ie maybe not wanting people to get injured if the employees try to catch a criminal.
That is just as bad- not worse- but a different type of bad- as the school who due to the cheering of their family & friends, refused to allow a few students to receive their high school diplomas.
This is somewhat similar to an Albertson's incident Ray linked to. Many retailers have similar policies. Report theft to a supervisor and leave it at that. Liability issues encourage employers to ask their employees not to apprehend or assist in the apprehension of shoplifters. Lawsuits can fly from many directions with the retailer being on the receiving end if the policy is not followed.
If I was an employer in that city, I'd try and pick up one or two of those guys. All they did was call the cops and point them out. Of course we are talking about Home Depot. The place has the worst customer service in the world.
