When is the last time...

you personally took to heart and implemented the following primary song lyrics?

If you chance to meet a frown
Do not let it stay
Quickly turn it upside down
and smile that frown away

No one likes a frowny face
Change it for a smile
Make the world a better place
By smiling all the while

Do you practice this on a regular basis?  Are there certain things that you find too encumbering to do something this simple that comes naturally to innocent children?

I hate this song. Which is interesting, since I'm such a happy person. biggrin.gif

See, this evil lady was creeping me out at a RS function when I was 2 or 3 and I was giving her my evil eye. She started singing this song and threatened to grab me and hold me up by my ankles to turn my frown upside down.

Funny how you forget things until it's brought to your attention again some 3 decades later. Thanks very much.

Okay... so the song triggers some repressed toddler emotional trauma baggage for coco...

But, then again, memories of forced attendance at RS for any toddler would probably do the same. For me, my toddler RS trauma was thanks to the taste of blue cheese (sometime until my mid-teens). They were having h'or d'ouerves, and they looked yummy. I picked up one off the tray (I was maybe two or three) and plopped it in my mouth only to have the taste make me sick to my stomach. bleh bleh bleh I barely made it out of the room (I knew better than to toss me cookies on the carpet in the RS room) before losing it all on the tiled hall floor.

Yet, many years later, with the help of dedicated Primary teachers and Young Men's advisors, I was able to put that trauma behind me.  And now, I not only embrace the stinky cheese, but relish a cheese with those nice thick green and blue streaks of piquant tasting penicillin molds running through 'em!  I have even been known to buy exotic varieties like Stilton and Cambozola at the local gourmet market on occasion and then snack on them in the evening!  rofl.gif

My mom would sing that to us when we were grouchy. I can't stand it now. More emotional trauma I experienced as a child!

Okay... two strikes...

If this song strikes out, I'll just have to pull another one out of the Children's Songbook... devilish.gifwink.gif

Occasionally I've sung the first couple lines of it to certain types of patients at our nursing home, when they sit w/a huge frown/grimace. I will say your smile is upside down, turn my head somewhat upside down and sing a line or t wo.

Living the song in my personal life is harder though do try to bite my tongue/perseveare and not complain and be a grump.

Gee, today I ate a quick snack at McDonalds. There was a long line and the lady at the front of the line was being rude and complaining about something to the manager. There was only one person at the cash register, and the whole line of people had to hear the complaints.

If I'd seen this thread before being in that line, maybe I could have sung to that lady!

OK- I was just kidding- I wouldn't do this! I did go up later and tell the manager I thought she was very polite/respectful w/that rude lady.

Once when my son was about 4 I was helping him get ready for church and he was in a bad mood. After I got his shoes tied I looked at him and we had this conversation:

me: Why are you so frowny?
son: I don't know.
me: You know what we need to do?
son: What?
me: Turn that frown upside down (said while I grabbed him and flipped him upside down).
son: [yowls and screeches].

When I turned him right side up he was smiling.

I don't think this caused any emotional scaring because it fell under the broad heading of "wrestling with dad," which is one of his favorite activities. He thinks he will beat me one of these times, and I suppose one day he will, but that day is still many years away.

Just that song bothers me.  No one likes to be told that they should be happy when they're having a bad day.  That song kind of does that.

Is there a song with music that bring to your brain the sound of nails on a chalkboard for you Cat???

I don't mind the lyrics... I never had any emotional or physical trauma associated with it... Just nails on a chalkboard... It's the music... someone said to me once... "but, it's so catchy!" To which I replied... "Maybe if you are tone deaf!!!" I immediately felt bed cause I love that person and I hurt her feelings... You know... that Snowman song is the same... gah... what some people want to pass off as music sometimes really makes me wonder...

Hey...I like the Snowman song! Where else can you get an excuse to lay in the middle of the floor in Primary??

I like the Smiles song too. The kids in nursery just like to see who can make the biggest frowny faces...then grin like crazy. smile.gif

Bwahahahaha! I am the EVIL Music Leader teaching songs that will traumatize another generation of children!

(p.s. I'll take Once There Was a Snowman as music any day over Rap... wink.gif)

For me it is that stupid Little Purple Pansies song... evileye  smile  To be able to survive singing it, me and the other macho boys would sing "Little Purpler Panzers"

Next you'll be telling me you don't like "In the Leafy Treetop" or "What Do You Do in the Summertime?"

I loved "What Do you do in the summertime".

"In the leafy treetops" is okay, but it so easily lends itself to being parodied by 8, 9, 10, and 11 year old boys... wink.gif

{Euphie tries to steal second, but wisely gets back before getting tagged}

I just giggle on the second verse, where "In my pretty garden, the flowers are naughty..."

Little purple pansies touched with yellow gold,
Growing in one corner of the garden old;
We are very tiny but must try, try, try,
If somebody steps on us we'll die, die, die.

(Lyrics complements of my daughter)

When my mother calls me,
Quickly run away...

When I was serving as Primary music leader, that slipped out once.  Of course, the kids thought it was hilarious and repeated it about six thousand times.  The next week, I was kindly informed by a good sister just how inappropriate it was, and how I had ruined her best tool for disciplining her children. rolleyes  If I was her child, I wouldn't stop running.

Understand that if anyone on this forum starts dissing Primary songs, Roper's furious will not be turning upside down any time soon!  Jason, Mirkwood, Coco--ya'll are on thin ice.

Roper: Yeah, I get in trouble all the time for singing, "Follow the Prophet, Follow the Prophet, Follow the prophet, Don't burn in Hell..."

I believe the church has issued requests that members not alter the text of the primary songs--no matter how well-meaning--probably because of now snappy my alternative lyrics are... biggrin.gif

Except on the Jonah verse, ray, it's Swallow the Prophet, Swallow the Prophet...

We'll have races when I'm playing in Primary to the Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes song. Piano always wins. he he

For the record I enjoy the panties, I mean pansies song. And also the Snowman song. Give said the little stream was one of my all-time favorites along with Tell me the stories of Jesus. And I'm so glad we're not gay when grandpa comes anymore. Of course, we'd just act like nothing is wrong, really...

We no longer romp and play outside, during the The Chapel Doors song either, which was a song written more to a primary that was held during the weekdays... and had to be adapted. Though I still remember the old words...

Much easier to exasperate primary teachers on mid-week primary than on Sunday... my class consisted of me and one other boy my age, and we went through 3 teachers in one year... devilish.gif (and we were bishop's son, first counselor's son, respectively... now, we didn't know we were being mean / rude, we were just being young cub scout age boys in the mid '70's)

I'm so Bad when Daddy comes home,
Bad as I can Be,
Kick him in the shins real hard
and hit him in the knees.
put my hands around his neck
squeeze him tight like this
pull his beard and give him what?
A great big kick!

Don't you wish you were my primary teacher back in the day?

You guys... disbelief.gif

I love "Give Said the Little Stream" too. I use it for inbetween when the Junior Primary is coming back in to join the Senior for closing. We pass around a toy "giving" to each other to see if they can pass it all around the room before the end of the song. But I don't care what the Songbook says, the lyric is grass. The GRASS grows greener still.

Even though in Arizona, it doesn't.

In my ugly garden
The flowers are dieing
It's full of weeds and thorns
And your pants will get torn
In my ugle garden

Speaking of which, I need to get outside and plant the flowers that have been sitting in the nursery flats on our picnic table for a couple weeks! doh.gif
