I saw my father cry on very few occasions, for any reason, that I can recall. It probably had some to do with his upbringing as well as his position as a leader. There are four times I can think of that stick out in my mind. 1. when I was probably about 10 or 11 and he was in the Stake Presidency and gave a stake conference address based on a question I had asked him a couple months earlier; 2. one night as a teen after I came home after cooling down after running out of the house when having an argument with him; 3. when he left me at the MTC; and 4. at his brother-in-law's funeral who had died suddenly and unexpectedly. In the case of 1 and 4, he kind of brushed some of it off by trying to change it to humor. Of course, for much of the time I was in later youth and throughout my teens, he didn't laugh much either. Later in life, he did seem to laugh more. Of course, there were times also later on in life where he would let his guard down and get misty eyed with certain good movies.

I think that men who are in leadership positions within the Church often have that additional burden of being or portraying a stoic nature... that somehow spirituality and worthiness is equated to always showing a stiff upper lip. But, I think that in addition to that, men really are taught and expected to contain, and often repress, their emotions. Hence, men are a lot better at compartmentalizing things in general.
