According to this article, a boy shot the largest wild pig ever with a .50 caliber revolver. What I'm finding hard to believe is not so much that the pig was the largest ever found, but that an 11 year old boy fired accurately 8 times with a .50 caliber pistol. It's hard for an adult to hold one of those things steady, not to speak of firing and handling recoil.

I don't doubt the "monster" feral pig stuff (hey domestic swine are bred to get big, so get some going feral and then breeding in the rich foraging environs of rural Georgia and Alabama and you gonna get some really big mean ole hogs. But the photo is deceiving. I noticed that the first time I saw it a couple days ago. The kid is not leaning on the carcass, but is clearly leaning on something probably about 5 - 10 feet behind the carcass, thus making the thing look even bigger than it really is.
Think about it... if the hog was measured at 9'4" snout to tail, and the 11 year old kid (think your 11 year old scouts in your ward's size) is probably 5'2" or so, then if he were laying next to it, he would be > 1/2 the length of the hog. But, as it is, his head looks smaller than the hog's mouth, and the hog's nostrils would be bigger than the kid's eyes... Of course, if you go to the monsterpig.com site, the size of the pig is even bigger than reported in this article...
My real question is why do you have an 11 year old hunting with a .50 calibre pistol?

I don't know if the pic is fake or not or if it has been doctored. I know all the major newspapers have printed it and the kid has been interviewed. As for the large handgun, I used to carry and shoot 44 Mag when I was a lad and would shoot groundsquirrels with it. If you grow up shooting and hunting this sort of thing doesn't sound so bizzare. Also, those shots weren't grouped that well. They were all over the pig. Even if the camera angle exagerates the size, it is still a very large hog. Probably a domestic hog that escaped. I've seen some domestic hogs that were close to that size before but they were being fed grain and lying around all day.
After looking at the website at http://monsterpig.com/ and seeing some of the different angles, even if the pic is doctored a bit, this is still a huge hog. The 500 Magnum also appears to have some sort of muzzle break and a pretty high tech sight. That gun alone is a very expensive rig and add the sight and muzzle break and it really is an expensive gun. I would never have gone after this monster though after wounding it. That thing could kill a person and eat them leaving only the stink and a few scraps of skin as evidence.
I've heard that pigs continue growing until they are butchered. As in they can be grazing out with the cows and grow as big or bigger... the deal is, they're always butchered before they get to that size. I'm thinking it's real.

It's a sad sad sad sad sick sad day when a little boy can't clock himself a monster pig with his forty-five and then put up a website about it, doctor a few pictures with photoshop... and all the people doubt his stories...

That pig must have been a terrifying pet. Not only was it huge but the tusks on that thing were pretty vicous looking. I feel sorry for this poor kid. At first people doubted his honesty and said the pictures were doctored. Now they will give him heck for shooting someone's pet.
The whole thing reminds me of Princess Mononoke... I wonder if the kid is now cursed and must now go on a quest to find the Spirit of the Forest and see with eyes unclouded by hate...

I wonder how good the meat is on a pig that size? I guess it doesn't work the same as a zucchini which loses flavor as it gets bigger so that's probably a dumb question but I can't help but ask it.
I kinda feel sorry for the thing which was probably too friendly when that kid found it and was probably easy to shoot the first time (or first few times). The kid probably could have gone, "here, piggy piggy" and had it walk right up to him (unless it was hungry and thus cantankerous).
It is important to remember that even though it was a pet, it was a male pig. Even domesticated ones can get pretty ornery just like domesticated rams and bulls. I've got one bull that is meaner than all get up even though he was a show bull at one time. He stands there and drools pawing at the ground if you try and get him to move from his spot. This sucker could have been a bit peeved about being dumped in the woods for four days.
Speaking of ornery bulls. One time my mother, brother and I were in our family's car driving down a dirt road near our home when we noticed a bull had gotten through a fence. He saw us as well and started chasing our car down the road. My brother and I enjoyed the chase more than our mom.
