I've started a new mental game (or policy) that may be inspired, I dunno... I just do these things from time to time...
Often I find myself going to CostCO to pick up something for the family. Sometimes I like to look at videos or some contraption that is purely for entertainment purposes, and my shopping habits could be better spent...
So to curb this, I decided that everytime I spend money on a new book, or CD, or game of some sort, I must likewise go to the section where they sell bulk food or water and purchase the equivalent in food supply items. Mostly I've been picking up bottled water because our stores are not that big yet, and CostCo's got a decent deal on it.
This has a doubling effect. Since a case of water is 3 bucks, and a CD costs often four or five times that much, I end up reconsidering if I want to carry around that much water... or if I do, I end up adding to our family's stores, which is not a bad thing, since I need to do it, and it's better to do it little by little rather than suppose I'll get it all done at once...
It has also helped me to think before I spend on frivolous purchases...

I like that idea. Of course, I'm not sure how applicable it is to my personal life. I haven't been spending much on entertainment lately.

Case of Costco brand water is like $5 here. That is not fair. But, I guess it is balanced out by the fact CD's and DVD's are still like four or five times that (oh but they are such a bargain compared to Target... not!).
Unfortunately, I always end up buying just a little (or sometimes a lot) more to add to food storage whenever I go to the grocery store, regardless of if I'm trying to budget wise or frugal in declaring discretionary spending for "toys".
