Should the internet be taxed?

An article at Slashdot discusses the expiration of the broadband internet tax moratorium. They also quote someone about the possibility of email being taxed. What do y'all think?

Taxes are a great way to stifle commerce so I'm all for destroying the economy!

I agree, Jason, taxes are repressive. They also help make government oppressive. The democrats get a lot of political power out of it because people know that they're more likely to hand out money than are the republicans.

I've been trying to think of good reasons why the government should tax emails. While it could cut down on spam, I bet the government would give spammers discounts. I cannot think of any more good reasons, thus I think it is thought of as a revenue stream and a way to control dissidents. Even though it is called a superhighway, it's not like the interstate system, that is run and patrolled by the government.

Throw down all who seek for power and authority over others.

Generally, the less taxes the better.

I like the internet not being taxed.

I still haven't figured out how I am going to keep my DSL once I loose my job...  If they start adding more taxes on top of that cost, they will send me OVER the edge emotionally.

In all seriousness... This kind of stuff is so strange and seems counter-productive to me too...    rolleyes

I remembeer a few years ago Al Gore, among others, tried to get something going to tax emails, at least.  The stated reason was that emails caused a drop in revenue for the US Postal Service.

I think propping up the post office just because is a bad idea. In fact, I think it'd be a great idea if they let UPS and FedEx carry normal letters. I think you'd see vast improvements at the post office as they would have to actually compete.
Taxing the internet would have a dampening effect on it. But maybe that's what they want. I know that Hillary complained about news traveling around the internet too fast.

You know, since most of the internet backbone is already owned by the telecommunications industry, we already are paying taxes for it... just indirectly. What they are wanting is to now add a direct tax (note: add, not replace).

The government needs to shut it's yap and stop this silly talk of "internet tax" or "e-mail tax". They don't know how to regulate it to keep it clean and have no spine to do it anyway, so they have no right to put a tax on the existence of technology that is utilized for communication and transfer of information. As said, they already tax phone lines and circuits and long distance and local toll and phone service and... well just about everything else there is in telecommunications... and at premium rates too. Look at your phone bill and just add up all the taxes and see what percentage of your phone bill is tax!

Oh, and local governments need to get out of the idea that it is alright to spend millions of dollars on subsidizing telecom companies to build infrastructure for wireless hi-speed WANs in a municipality.

If they do regulate it with taxes, I expect them to regulate the content too.
