Country is to music as moonpies are to dessert...

there may be some resemblance, but that's about where it ends...

In my ongoing quest to right wrongs done, provide justice where it has lacked, and generally just to free those who are slaves to folks making the strange twangy nasal sounds while wearing dime store cowboy outfits in Nashville, I have determined the need for re-indoctrination... er re-education... er raising awareness to the evils of that evil amongst us, the so-called "country music" beast...

Here are some of the results of a brilliant, anonymous researcher, assembled at great peril to their own life... all for the benefit of saving mankind...

And equally as risk filled was this brave crusader who likely is in a mental institution now for having retrieved the secrets to the lyrics...

Country music is great if you don't take it too seriously.

Don't like the drinking songs, the carousing songs, etc... but a lot of songs are about the human condition, and they're decent.

I like country music. Selectively, of course.

Oh come on, Cat. There's some really good country music out there.

"Little Rock" by Collin Raye is just about as perfect as a song can get.

And Reba's voice is just about as perfect as a singer can get.

As for Billy Ray Cyrus: Any self-respecting country boy will accept him as neither country nor boy...

I am amazed at how awful country music got after "No Fences," and I include in "awful" everthing Garth did after that.

Seriously, once Clint married Lisa and Garth sold out, the Shania and Faith crew took over and it has been completely awful almost universally. Except for the delightful exception of Lee Ann Womack. And Gary Allen was good through "Smoke rings in the Dark," but eveything since that is awful.

I frequently read Orson Scott Card's ruminations about how good today's country music is, and just have to laugh at what a maroon he is in this area. Whatever he's listening to on country radio, it ain't country music. But I'm glad he enjoys it.

Country music used to be real, now, it's just a tarted up coctail waitress in a Dolly Parton wig.

FWIW, the naughty word software is just hillarious.  I spelled the word before waitress correctly, but for some reason (and I do not know what it was blocking  wink  ) it wouldn't let the word through.

Oh, and Roper, all of the singers and songs you listed are good.

To it's everlasting condemnation, those artists wouldn't get a second look from the country music industry today. Especially Reba; she's way too real.

My favorite country music artists are John Anderson, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Allison Kraus...

PS> I totally agree about Garth.

Roper, if it is music and good, it ain't country... wink.gif I'm neither a country boy, nor was I raised on country sunshine... wink.gif

The artists I consider good who are lumped into country, I feel are more aptly classified as modern folk music... Micheal Martin Murphy and Kenny Rogers for example.

I like various rock stylings, mostly 80's rock, Poison especially, Rush, Metallica, and other. I also like some country, mainly things by Hank Williams Jr., Toby Keith, etc.

Mostly, I just surf the radio till I hit a song. That is how I came across Cher's Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves. If I like it, I like it and I make no apology for it.

I don't analyze my music too much.  I listen to it if I enjoy it regardless of what others classify it as.  Whether or not today's country music is really country music is a debate I don't bother getting involved in 'cause I really don't care.

Roper listed a couple of good ones and I've liked songs by several other "country" music artists over the years.  I have mostly been into rock n' roll but my music tastes cover quite a range.

I hated Achy Break Fart, that song was terrible. Most of the country music that came after Garth's second album has been pretty bad. I prefer the classics. I love Johnny Cash even before that horrible movie that I refused to watch. I also enjoy a good Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Dolly, George Strait, Clint Black and I'm a real sucker for some old Willy Nelson. Of course one of my favorites is Streets of Bakersfield by Yokum and local favorite Buck Owens!!! I don't like some of this more modern stuff. It's just silly.

I'm sorta' with TitusTodd on this. I don't overanalyze the music. Like ray said, some of the messages are just crap, but some are pretty good and it "speaks" to a large section of America, if anyone here has had the opportunity to live in the South before. The song "I'd like to check you for ticks" comes to mind. wink.gif

I think some of the old stuff is good - I like Dolly. biggrin.gif Willie is good, I liked most of the Judds. That Toby Keith/Willie song is good - beer for my horses one.

I like some of the new stuff, too. The whole Garth experience didn't do anything for me. Don't care for Faith Hill. Tim's okay. biggrin.gif I'd totally forgotten that Achy Breaky song... I'm liking Dierks Bentley and Jason Aldean and Rodney Atkins. Go ahead and make fun of me! I don't care! nana.gif

And you can't tell me country music people can't clean up as well as any other type of music people.
