I imagine you have heard about the immigration "compromise". I am Mr. Republican, but this is just too much. Why don't the politicians get that their base of support is totally opposed to them on this issue? Why doesn't some Presidential candidate get the sense to tap into this and ride it to the White House?? And John McCain's support for this kills him as the Republican candidate, IMO.

Actually, Shiz, that is the issue that Tancredo is running on, but it won't be enough to get him into the whitehouse. He is famous in Colorado and other parts for being very militantly anti-immigration. I'm sickened by the compromise too.

The part that gets me is that there is nothing we can do about it. The Minuteman Militia has tried and got a bad name. Glenn Beck decries it and gets called a racist. Being labeled a racist could get you fired---it's the new Mcarthyism!
It will take something of a drastic nature to wake up our nations leaders, even Bush. Even then, I won't hold my breath. The argument that W uses for the war in Iraq ("We're fighting them over there so we don't have to fight them here") now rings hollow to me. What good is it to fight crooks in the neighborhood if you leave your doors unlocked at night? You know how easily a man of middle eastern descent could be passed off as a Mexican?
But the part that REALLY gets me is this: when I wish to visit Canada as a tourist, I get interrogated at the border, my car and belongings have a chance of getting searched, and I have to provide documentation for my children. JUST TO VISIT AS A TOURIST!!!! There is a chance I might reak havoc in Banff or Vancouver.
The fact that our Senate leaders would bend over for this AGAIN (like in 1986) just proves they don't care; the double standard causes them no inner conflict. Especially if these illegal aliens are potential voters.
This is all about money and power. The dems want the added voters and the donations from their liberal supporters. The repubs want the $$$ from business contributors. It makes me sick. Political suicide. I'm about ready to change my party to independent and I probably will after the primary when liberal Gulianni is handed the nomination. Bunch of sell outs!!!!
Did you ever really think any of thems as is power and sets da rules meant what they were saying about immigration or border control? Reichschancelor Pelosi and her ilk will be touting this as a great victory for the unfortunate victims of poverty who have flooded over the border... Mr. Roboto McCain (he looked like some sort of robot from Dr. Who in the second debate, didn't he?) and the bulk of the Republicans will tout it as the best, most practical solution to the problem and yet have no way of enforcing it...
Hello... the key word that should have tipped you off was "reform"...
In politics, regardless of who is saying it, what party they are from, the word "reform" really just means doing the same thing the same way but with different window dressing after much creation of hot air and then followed by much mutual back slapping and congratulatory handshaking.
Getting "tough" is not even what some of the folks are talking about, like Tancredo...
Who from either / any party has actually done anything to enforce the existing law? That is where it boils down to. Actual action.
Got to hand it to Romney, though. At least in the second debate, the "plan" he presented kind of sounded like the "plan" that was being worked on and negotiated and ended up getting signed this week. I guess he could get away spilling those beans, since he didn't have any risk of getting political egg on face like McCain if it went south... Maybe Romney at least is willing to do more than just bloviate, posture, and give nice sound bytes like the establishment does. And then again, maybe not. I think guys like Tancredo or Hunter, who may be wildly popular in their local consituencies, would end up being nothing more than figureheads due to the fact they come across as non-team players, and well, we know the political thing is all about being a team player...

So far, from what I've heard, this immigration bill is full of significant and important reforms, including things like who is allowed to come with a person applying for a "Z Visa". Prior laws allowed applicants to include all their extended family (aunt's, uncles, etc...) whereas now it is restricted solely to the immediate children (they must be under the age of 18) and spouse. If we were to enforce the bill, I think it wouldn't be half bad. All of these opportunities are contingent upon the immigrant returning to their country during the process, and paying a substantial penalty. All of these opportunities in the bill are contingent upon border improvements (albeit many are unfunded at this point) protection. I think it's important to understand from whom you get your information about this bill... hopefully you'll take the time to read and understand the 1000 page document that defines this landmark reform.
It is unfortunate thatthat Ted Kennedy is taking a lot of credit for it, but most of the ideas in it don't come from him.

Maybe Cat we should offer to carry them on litters over the border. Come on!! This deal is really too good to believe. The end result is amnesty. I doubt any real enforcement will take place or real border security. This is a win for the illegals and yet they still complain!!!!
I think it's a good sign that it's a decent bill when those on both sides of the extermities of the debate complain.
Medved was talking about this bill this afternoon. I felt that the bill had a lot of positives to offer should it pass. I think it is a step in the right direction, though it has a few problems...
I'm hoping he'll post his thoughts so I can link to them... I think the demagogues on both sides of this issue are really attempting to villify the Bill before it even gets a chance to be tried, and that's unfortunate.

All the modifications are for our benefit to accept the legislation. The only enforcing the government does on the border is imprison border patrol agents for doing their job. Withhold evidence from the jury and make deals with drug dealers. Even the national guard are not allowed to shoot back when fired upon.
Thousands come across daily and they aren't here to work the fields. Hundreds of OTM (other than Mexican) have been coming across the borders, many carrying Potassium Iodide tablets (to ward off radiation poisoning). AQ has been sneaking in and linking up with MS13 and Aryan Nation members, making arrangement for arms deals.
This stinks to high heaven. One has to wonder the IQ level on Capital Hill. If not that, then what do they have up their sleeve. SPP perhaps?

Part of Dana Rohrabacher 's (R-CA) speech in the House 5/22/07 Mr. ROHRABACHER. Madam Speaker, a tsunami of illegal aliens is sweeping into our country, crowding our classrooms, closing our hospital emergency rooms, unleashing violent crime, and driving down wages.
This is not theory. It is a harsh, threatening reality borne out not by numerous academic studies, but by the life experiences of the American families from California to Georgia and from Iowa to New Jersey.
Our middle class is being destroyed. Our communities are not safe. Our social service infrastructure is collapsing. And, yes, it has everything to do with illegal immigration, illegal immigration which is out of control. And year after year, while our schools deteriorate and our jails fill and our hospital emergency rooms shut down, the elite in this country turns a blind eye to the disaster that is befalling the rest of us, their fellow Americans. The elites obscure the issue and maneuver to keep in place policies that reward illegal immigrants with jobs and benefits, and now, of course, being rewarded with citizenship.
This country, the upper class says, can't function without cheap labor.
Well, cheap to the captains of industry and the political elite, but painfully expensive to America's middle class. It's our kids whose education is being diminished, our families who are paying thousands more in health insurance to make up for the hospital costs of giving free service to illegals. It's our neighborhoods who suffer from crime perpetuated by criminals transported here from other countries. And, yes, our livelihoods are being dragged down as wages are depressed and anchored down by a constant influx of immigrants, mostly illegal, some with H1B visas, willing to work at a pittance.
Big business, with its hold on the GOP, in an unholy alliance with the liberal left coalition that controls the Democratic Party, have been responsible for this invasion of our country, this attack on the well-being of our people. This coalition gives the jobs and passes out the benefits that lured tens of millions of illegals to our country. It's no accident. This predicament was predictable. It's been over 20 years of bad policy in the making. If you give jobs and benefits, the masses of people over there will do anything to get over here. And that's what we've been doing. Give it and they will come. Surprise, surprise.
Now the out-of-touch elite has introduced yet another piece of legislation, this so-called comprehensive reform bill that they claim will fix our illegal immigration crisis once and for all. Of course, this is a crisis they created. They are trumpeting the supposedly new enforcement measures and security measures that will be initiated in this bill, the border fence, new agents, new employer sanctions, if only we will swallow hard and give amnesty to those law-breakers who are already here.
Like Lucy holding out the football for Charlie Brown to kick, the bill is yet another effort to trick us. It's an illusion, a scam that will make things worse, not better.
. . .
The immigration legislation being foisted upon us will create a different America with a permanent alien underclass, people who may or may not share our Democratic values and may or may not be loyal to America's ideals. It is time for patriots to act, to stand up and be heard. Be angry. Call on elected officials to be held accountable.
This supposed comprehensive immigration bill must be defeated, and I would call on my fellow Members of Congress and the American people to join in this fight. We need every patriot to be activated now to save America.
Convert, I agree about Hatch(et) man. In fact, most politicos appall me. For the last two presidential elections I voted Constitution Party - Howard Phillips in 2000 and Mike Peroutka in 2004. It's a great feeling, knowing that my vote did not contribute to current ugliness. And to think that all those years, I was afraid of "throwing my vote away" when that's what I was actually doing -- voting for a liar who said one thing to get elected and then did the opposite once in office.
I still think the bill has some good tough components to it, and we should put our support behind those elements of the bill, rather than let the dems neuter it because we all cried sour grapes about a solution that simply is NEVER gonna pass legislation...

What I'm wondering is, why don't we simply enforce the laws we have? Stop prosecuting border guards for doing their jobs. Let them patrol areas where thousands of illegal immigrants cross daily. Prosecute employers who hire illegals. If illegals couldn't find work in the US, we wouldn't even have to worry about deporting them. They'd leave. We don't need new laws. We need to enforce the laws we have.

You can be prosecuted for trying to find out if someone is here illegally before you hire them, if they already show you their papers (which could be forged). Since it can be construed as racial discrimination.
As to employers who hire illegals knowingly, there isn't really much of a fine.
Does this bill say anything about national ID cards? While they are intended to help figure out who is here illegally, they are going to put the greatest burden on freedom loving Americans who don't want to prove that they are allowed to be here.
In German accent: Ver are your papers, Schweinhund?
Russian Accent: Papers please! Or I will shoot you!
"What I came in time to believe is that the great shortcoming of this White House, the great thing it is missing, is simple wisdom. Just wisdom--a sense that they did not invent history, that this moment is not all there is, that man has lived a long time and there are things that are true of him, that maturity is not the same thing as cowardice, that personal loyalty is not a good enough reason to put anyone in charge of anything, that the way it works in politics is a friend becomes a loyalist becomes a hack, and actually at this point in history we don't need hacks."
"One of the things I have come to think the past few years is that the Bushes, father and son, though different in many ways, are great wasters of political inheritance. They throw it away as if they'd earned it and could do with it what they liked. Bush senior inherited a vibrant country and a party at peace with itself. He won the leadership of a party that had finally, at great cost, by 1980, fought itself through to unity and come together on shared principles. Mr. Bush won in 1988 by saying he would govern as Reagan had. Yet he did not understand he'd been elected to Reagan's third term. He thought he'd been elected because they liked him. And so he raised taxes, sundered a hard-won coalition, and found himself shocked to lose his party the presidency, and for eight long and consequential years. He had many virtues, but he wasted his inheritance."
"Bush the younger came forward, presented himself as a conservative, garnered all the frustrated hopes of his party, turned them into victory, and not nine months later was handed a historical trauma that left his country rallied around him, lifting him, and his party bonded to him. He was disciplined and often daring, but in time he sundered the party that rallied to him, and broke his coalition into pieces. He threw away his inheritance."

Excerpts from an article in The New American for 13 June 2005 about Congressman Cannon (R-UT):
Cannon described as ...a congressional point man for the Bush administrations illegal immigration amnesty scheme,...
By way of contrast (with Colorado Congressman Tancredo), Rep. Cannons relationship with the Reconquista Lobby - foundation funded, open borders groups like the Mexican - American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) and La Raza - is close kindred to treason. In March 2003, Cannon hellped create the U.S. - Mexico Political Caucus. In a June 6, 2002 speech to a gathering of MALDEF, where he received the groups Excellence in Leadership award, Cannon declared: We love immigration in Utah....And we dont oftentimes make the distinction between legal and illegal.
I wonder who the "We" is who love immigration in Utah.
