Okay, let's try:

56 B.C.
Pro Caelio is one of the most famous surviving speeches by the Roman orator, Cicero. It is Cicero's defence, delivered on April 4, 56 BC, of Marcus Caelius Rufus on a number of obscure charges, including sedition, theft, the murder of the Alexandrian diplomat Dio, and the purchasing and use of poison against Clodia. Of these the primary charge is that of political violence, the murder of Dio.

Caelius had been the lover of the notorious Clodia, sister of Publius Clodius Pulcher, Cicero's enemy, who may have brought the prosecution. Cicero represents the charges against Caelius as the revenge of a woman scorned, and carries out a skillful character assassination of Clodia.

Hey, I got to post this one some where else too:

Year 1609

August 25 1609 - Galileo Galilei demonstrates his first telescope to Venetian lawmakers. He is the first to perform observational astronomy as he observes the moons of Jupiter, after the manner of the ancient Egyptians who named the stars (astro-nomers), at the Edfu temple, over 2000 years earlier.

I already remember that from some stuff we did with Son1, we love the stars, and live in a GREAt place for stargazing still... I did look up the details...

184 - Lucius Artorius Castus, commander of a detachment of Sarmatian conscripts stationed in Britain, led his troops to Gaul to quell a rebellion. This is the first appearance of the name, Artorius, in history and some believe that this Roman military man is the original, or basis, for the Arthurian legend. The theory says that Castus' exploits in Gaul, at the head of a contingent of mounted troops, are the basis for later, similar traditions about "King Arthur," and, further, that the name "Artorius" became a title, or honorific, which was ascribed to a famous warrior in the fifth century.  From Arthurian Timeline

The first emperor of the Tang dynasty, Tai-tsung (597 - 649 A.D.), united China under his royal family. Tai-tsung was very open-minded, brave and intelligent. Under his powerful leadership, China was entering another great period, and Chinese control again reached over Central Asia. As in the Han dynasty, goods and ideas flowed across the silk route during the Tang dynasty.

Being cosmopolitan and tolerant, Tang dynasty was confident in itself and curious about the world. Foreign visitors were welcomed to trade with the Tang Chinese. At the time many foreign merchants came to China, and the art in China was greatly influenced by foreign art. In order to keep on trading with foreign merchants, The Chinese kept on producing art works such as ceramic, pottery and porcelain. As a matter of fact foreigners were often depicted in the art of that period.

One example is this ceramic statue of a camel carrying a troupe of musicians reflects the Tang fascination with the Turkic cultures of Central Asia. The two musicians with beard are Central Asian, and the rest are Tang Chinese. The motif of the musicians on the back of the camel is very popular in Tang dynasty. Foreigners were always depicted in Chinese art as great nose and hairy faces. The statue reveals a new interest in nationalism, an important trend in both painting and sculpture. Compared to the rigid, staring ceramic soldiers of the first emperor of the Qin dynasty, the Tang Chinese in ceramics have lively gestures and expressions. Ceramic statues like this had shown a gorgeous variety of Tang life. Also, there is another Tang ceramic technique of using a three-color-glaze, which is also a specialty of Tang ceramists. This technique somehow symbolizes the cosmopolitan and colorful life of Tang Chinese.

In a.d. 190, Pope Victor I, the first Latin Pope, excommunicated Eastern churches for celebrating Easter on the wrong day.  He convened a council to determine the "official" date of Easter.

From Roper's small stash of useless trivia:  We now determine Easter as the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox.  Weird, huh.

263 BC (301 BC to 198 BC)

The Ptolemies rule Jerusalem (and have since they got that part of Alexander's empire in 301 B.C.) That must have been a fairly peaceful century for Jews; a sizable Jewish population settled in Egypt. Also there is little history of that era, unlike the time following 198 BC, when Antiochus III, a Seleucid, took over the Palestine area and tried to eliminate traditional Hebrew worship. Part of this program led to defiling the temple and requiring pagan sacrifice, which led to the Maccabean revolt.

In 781 A.D., a debate on the Christian and Muslim faiths took place over a period of two days between Mar Timothy I (780-823), Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East and the Abbasid Caliph Mahdi (775-785) in Baghdad. The record of this debate survives in an original Syriac version and later Arabic versions. This book contains the text of the Syriac version and an English translation by Alphonse Mingana. This debate is significant for a number of reasons. It provides a very early witness to the relations between Islam and Christianity. It is characterized by an open and honest sharing of ideas and beliefs that is often sadly lacking in later similar encounters, even in the present day. The participants demonstrate a high degree of respect for each other that extends to their often opposing beliefs. They tend to look for common ground but never ignore or trivialize their differences.

602 A.D.

Emperor Flavius Mauricius Tiberius Augustus of the Byzantine Empire, always dealing with the lack of money, decreed that the Byzantine army should stay for winter beyond the Danube, which would prove to be a serious mistake. The exhausted troops mutinied against the emperor. Probably misjudging the situation, Maurice repeatedly ordered his troops to start a new offensive rather than returning to winter quarters. After a while, his troops gained the impression that Maurice no longer mastered the situation, they proclaimed Phocas their leader and demanded Maurice to abdicate. Phocas entered Constantinople in November, where he was crowned emperor, while his troops captured Maurice and his family.

Maurice was brutally murdered on November 27, 602. It is said that the deposed emperor was forced to watch his three sons executed before his eyes, before he was beheaded himself (he is worshipped as a saint in the Orthodox Church). Empress Constantina and her three daughters were spared and sent to a monastery.

A lot of significant things happened in 1885:

- To escape a federal crackdown on polygamy, hundreds of Mormon families fled to Mexico and established the first of five Mormon colonies in the state of Chihuahua. (I wonder how many of those descendants have now come back here as "illegal immigrants".)

- J.R. McCulloch wrote his book "Taxation and the Funding System." In it he stated that: "The moment you abandon the cardinal principle of exacting from all individuals the same proportion of their income or their profits, you are at sea without a rudder or compass and there is no amount of injustice of folly you may not commit." (Should be required reading for every member of congress.)

- Anna Pavlova Russias premier ballerina, was born.

- Grover Cleveland entered the White House as a bachelor.

- The 1st Japanese arrived in Hawaii.

- Mark Twain's Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was published.

- The Washington Monument was dedicated.

- American Telephone and Telegraph (AT&T) incorporated as a subsidiary of Bell Telephone to build and operate a long distance network.

- The Eastman Film Co. of Rochester, N.Y., manufactured the first commercial motion picture film. George Eastman had perfected a method for bonding photographic emulsion onto thin strips of celluloid.

- The Salvation Army was officially organized in the U.S.

- Texas was the last Confederate state readmitted to the Union.

- Boston Pops Orchestra formed.

- "Good Housekeeping" magazine was 1st published.

- Victor-Marie Hugo (b.1802), French novelist (Les Miserables) and poet, died.

- French scientist Louis Pasteur successfully tested an anti-rabies vaccine on a boy bitten by an infected dog.

- Gottlieb Daimler received a German patent for a motorcycle.

- The 1st gasoline pump was delivered to a gasoline dealer in Ft. Wayne, Ind.

- Nils Bohr, Danish physicist who won the 1992 Nobel Prize for physics and later worked on the first atom bomb, was born.

- George Patton, U.S. Army commander in World War II, was born.

- The soft drink Dr Pepper was introduced.

- California in response to the yellow menace passed legislation that allowed districts to create separate schools for Asian Americans.

- Carl Friedrich Benz invented the first operable auto with an internal combustion engine.

- America's 1st recorded serial murders took place in Austin, Texas.

- English scientist Francis Galton proved that no two 2 fingerprints were identical.

- Dr. Lazarus Ludwig Zamenhof (1859-1917), Polish ophthalmologist, invented the artificial language known as Esperanto.
