My husband and I always thought the "Take Your Child to work" day was a crock. It was just a way for the feminazis to help women who worked outside the home feel good about themselves. It was a way for the women to show the kids how much more important her job was than staying home and being a mommy. And the feminazis wanted to show the girls how "glamorous" a career was and how beneath them being a stay at home mom is. Remember this originally was started as "Take Your Daughter" to work.
But Ray, that is too funny that a kid pushed "The Big Red Button"!!!
Yeah, it started out Take your Daughter to Work Day, and I agree the motives were weak... then someone pointed out that it could be good for all kids.
When I Take my daughters to work, I get nothing done... because every five minutes they want a drink, or to go walk around, and find my work extermely boring to watch. :)

We encased our big red button (at a place where I used to work) in plexiglass after one of the computer operators hit it with a nerf football.
We were loading payroll data tapes, and he was (inexplicably) tossing the football against the wall. Luckily, the latest tape finished loading moments before he hit the button with the football.
It only took about a half hour for the AS 400 to come back up, and we didn't lose any data.

Football with an AS400!!!!! At least the AS400 is pretty robust!

I think it turned into the take your child to work from take your daughter to work because there was such an uproar of how sexist it was and the powers that be decided that it made good corporate citizenship sense to stop playing to the tune of solely the feminazi agenda.
I will not bring my children to any of these sorts of things. Why? To show them what a boring life their dad leads? I remember going with my dad to his office before I was in school when I was little and being bored out of my gourd on times when mom was sick or what have you and he needed to go into the office for a bit. I have taken three or four of my kids on a couple occasions in to my office similarly (due to logistics needs or what have you), and not only are they bored beyond being out of their gourd, it is even less efficient for me because I am trying to keep them quiet and to not get into stuff.
I did one "career" day in high school (and that because it was required by all 9th graders). Most went with their dads or moms. I didn't, cuz I had been to both my parents workplaces... Boring boring, why are my parents so boring! So, I selected the parent of a couple of my friends. He worked for a company that consulted to CompuServe... COOL! I'm gonna learn about com-pyut-ers! I'm gonna see high-tech! WoooHooo! Boy wuz I wrong! Let's just say, I ended up in a career path (mostly by necessity and not by preference) very similar to what I experienced that day... sedentary, sitting at a desk, doing administrivial things related to computers, and dozing off. Oh how I wish that day had not been prophetic!

It seems to me the only thing you've learned is that Caesar is a "salad dressing dude."
Two of the places that I've worked have put the effort into making it fun for the kids. For instance, having the graphic designer available to help kids in a large room with computers set up for them to play at graphics. And having various demonstrations of our products for the older kids, and ending the whole affair with snacks in the cafeteria. For that matter, it wasn't scheduled for an entire day, either, it started midafternoon and ended a little early for a workday.
Once a coworker scheduled some time with me to talk to his daughter about her career plans. I have no idea if anything I said was helpful, but her dad was definitely trying to help her understand her options.
So there can be good experiences, but I agree that mostly bringing your kids to work is miserable, especially if you had any hope of doing some work yourself.
