Excuse me Mr. Hypocritical former U.N. Secretary General who was well part of the take in embezzlement and bribes and what have you... How about you share your wealth?
How exactly do you propose we "share wealth" with nations where the rulers are corrupt like you? The funds do not end up going to those that you ostensibly are talking about. They would line the pockets of people in control.
I think we and the people in Africa will be best served if we stick with the paradigm of teaching you how to fish instead of merely giving you a fish, thank you very much. Even so, the corruption that is rampant in many of those nations makes it hard or next to impossible to teach how to fish...

This is the same problem I have with Bono's foreign debt forgiveness programs. Many of these countries are so crooked that the debt relief will often only help a tyranical dictator like Mugabe from Zimbabwe. As far as atoning for slavery, how about the stronger African tribes atoning for conquering their neighbors and selling them as slaves.
Now that I've been thinking about it. I think I will ask for reparations and such for my Celtic ancestors that were enslaved first by the Romans, then the Vikings, and later the Normans. So as I see it, I'm owed by Italy, the Scandanavian Countries, and France. Where do I pick up my check?
Because the US does nothing for Africa as it is. This is really stupid of Kofi, all it does is serve to diminish the great contributions already made to the "Dark Continent".
Btw, Bush's work in Africa has been by far the best work done in Africa to date. I heard a report talking about how he has created a food program that buys back a certain percentage of African grown food, thus supporting African farmers, alowing them to be selfsufficient, rather than sending our food across the sea, which only weakens their economy.
Sometimes I get the feeling that Pres. Bush is trying really hard to do the right things but that no matter how hard he tries, he's told he's a failure.

I'm not slow; I'm special. (Don't take it personally, everyone finds me offensive. Yet somehow I manage to live with myself.)
In a speech to the Council on Foreign Relations on 22 April, 1997, as reported in the Sept. 1999 McAlvany Intelligence Advisor and elsewhere, Kofi Annan stated: "Clearly we cannot meet the challenges of the new millennium with an instrument designed for the very different circumstances of the middle of the twentieth century. Make no mistake about it, the anticipated reforms will erode national sovereignty, infringe on personal liberties, and lead the world into a system of global governance."
In a speech to the U.N. General Assembly 18 Sept 1999, Annan stated: "State sovereignty, in its most basic sense, is being redefined by the forces of globalism and international cooperation." (UN release, "Two Concepts of Sovereignty")
Annan has in other speeches criticized Americans as being stingy people for their lack of charity to impoverished people. One in particular I remember well was at some a college graduation a few years ago.
I have read, and being 100% Canadian, taken keen interest in reports that in 1994, Kofi Annan, then head of the UN's peacekeeping division, thwarted efforts of the UN military commander, Canadian General Romero Dallaire to intervene to prevent the massacre of hundreds of thousands of Tutsis, and then blocked investigation of the incident.
Weve seen the UN Secretary General attempting to prevent US congressional investigation into the multi-million dollar oil-for-food scandal, which involved the Secretary Generals son. On 14 June this year a memo surfaced revealing Kofi Annans personal and direct connection to the scandal. There was a movement in Congress to call for Annans resignation over that scandal. And U.S. Senator Coleman wrote: "As long as Mr. Annan remains in charge, the world will never be able tolearn the full extent of the bribes, kickbacks, and under the table payments that took place under the U.N.s collective nose."
Yet during a gathering of world leaders held in conjunction with the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Utah, President Hinkley reportedly stated that "We are highly honored to have this good, wonderful leader with us. What a tremendous work he's doing in trying to bring peace and goodness to the people of the world." I've lost track of when and in which SLC rag that was reported.
Okay, I'm thoroughly confused... lundbaek, you lived in Denmark, you are 100% Canadian, and yet are involved in American politics in your spare time from your Church Service mission?
And President Hinckley is reported to have paid verbal tribute to Kofi Annan at the 2002 Winter Olympics? Is there even proof that Annan made an appearance, and that such a gathering of world leaders was held in SLC? Not being skeptical, but that all sounds like hearsay rumor until documentation can be provided.
Anyway, if President Hinckley did say something to that effect, well it is a far cry from saying he is a man worthy of following... and, I doubt he would come out and give him a prophetic and public call to repentance like was done to Ahab unless The Lord told him to do so.

In response to CatHerder's expressed concern about me, I'm Canadian with US citizenship, 69, have lived and worked 12 years in Europe including a recent misison in Denmark, have had experiences and conversations with people that have motivated me to seek out the causes of what I cosider deteriorating conditions in America, and to try to instill in others an awareness of and desire to oppose the forces that President Benson told us about in April 1988 Conference, among other occasions. It's a challenge to make time for this, but I feel strongly about it.
It's pretty apparent some of you dislike me, but that's OK. I do not frequent this forum to win friends, and have considered bailing. I feel strongly about what I do and say here. I appreciate Cat's checking out the statements I made that he took issue with. I posted that in hopes that others would take as much interest in it as he did for whatever reason. I've done lots of homework on these subjects, and I'm always happy when others do also.
I fear greatly for this country for reasons I've given in many posts here, and I get more appreciation for my comments, mostly by private email, than I get flak.
no unhallowed hand can stop the work from progressing... the truth of God will go forth till it has penetrated every website, sounded in every ear, till the purposes of God shall be accomplished and the great Jehovah shall say the work is done
lundbaek, what I said had nothing to do with whether I like you or not.
You're just, well kind of like an ogre (as in Shrek) in that you are many layered like an onion! Just call me Donkey!
I didn't take issue with your statements in this posting... I just found a couple -- okay, just one -- of them to be, well, odd... like as in what are you trying to say by referencing what Pres. Hinckley said to / about Kofi Annan? All of them seem to be documentably correct, but I don't see why Pres. Hinckley's statement was juxtaposed next to them.

In adding President Hinkley's statement to my post in question I was trying to stimulate thought and maybe some discussion on a subject that maybe wouldn't go over well on a forum, although it has been batted about here and there on at least two other forums. This basic subject has caused some consternation among some LDSs, including myself, and in searching for the answer I was able to discuss the general question with Hartman Recktor, a retired 70, and with a son of the late H. Verlan Andersen, a former 70. Both of these men have/had been discretely (more so than I) active in speaking and writing in the effort to call to the attention of Americans the increasing dangers to our nation and freedoms. They both said basically the same thing, which put me at considerable ease. The bottom line is that the First Presidency knows what the score is and is acting in the bet interest of the Church at this time.
Re. the multi-layered onion, the older an onion gets before being picked, the more layers it develops. At least I think that's how it works.
