Adult Topic: Loss of Virginity now treatable in France.

The following link is potentially offensive to some, but it's about how in France there is now a medical procedure which claims to "restore virginity" due to the Islamic need for a wife to be a virgin, and the horrible punitive nature of islam upon women who for any reason cannot show evidence of it upon the night of one's wedding.

Now avoiding the graphic details, um... does anyone have any thoughts upon this?

There are two points of discussion here, that I thought were um... worth mentioning...

1. I find it ironic that one thinks that sexual purity can be treated with what appears to be the equivalent of plastic surgery.

2. I find it sad the treatment of women in other parts of the world, regardless of their past.

This is really sad. While I bemoan the ravages of feminism, I don't like its opposite either. I forget where I heard it, but the opposite of dysfunctional is dysfunctional. For instance, someone who will sleep with whomever, whenever is dysfunctional. But someone who will not sleep with anyone for any reason, including their spouse, is also dysfunctional.

What I wonder is where the stigma on the men is in this culture for not being pure when they marry...

From a woman (and a Rape survivor) I just have to say... that this surgery in the OP is so WRONG!  On SO many levels, I can't even wrap my head around the concept!  <major exploding head here>  boo.gif

Jason... if you hear of a surgery like the one you mention (for stupidity, that is) would you PRETTY PLEASE send me an email...?   I could really put that one to use... biggrin

Here is an article about the same topic that was in the Washington Post a few weeks ago:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/03/02/AR2007030201549.html

It was about a doctor in LA who does the same procedure (or at least very similar). Honestly the entire concept  really bothered me.

I feel the entire concept disregards in a grievous way the trust that should exist between potential spouses. I don't understand how anyone could try to hide something so important.  Also, if a woman has this surgery, she still has the "disease risk" of sexually transmitted diseases. What happens if she has this surgery and then later gives the new husband some STD. Sooner or later she'll be found out.

Saying this, and PollyAnna I hope you know I am  saying this with a totally sincere heart and as one who has never been and hopefully never will be in your position:

I could understand if someone who was a virgin and a victim of either incest or rape wished to get this surgery. Even though people in such situations are definitely still pure and innocent, I could understand if they desired to have this surgery to feel "physically" the way they were prior to the gross violation. However, they truly are still a virgin and so in that sense wouldn't need this surgery.

Hope that makes sense.

Nita, I respect what you are trying to say... but from my viewpoint as one who has spent a long time working at personal healing, there are much healthier ways... that surgery would not truly change a thing, it can't reverse what was done or make someone feel different about their memories.  Healing happens through Christ... And it has been my experience that some doctors don't GET anything, especially that concept...  That is certainly true in this case...

I think it is admirable that you would like to help someone who has gone through a horrible experience to feel that the abuse did not happen, I just don't think this is the a viable option for that.  twocents.gif

PollyAnna- I understand your view and you are right, I meant it as something if someone wanted it and felt they needed it as a component to their healing. But you are absolutely right in that type of healing, the Atonement and the saving balm of the Savior have to be what matters most.

PollyAna, I sent you a PM, if you get a chance to look at it. Thanks.
