Bountiful, the True and Living message board.

BOUNTIFUL, the true and living message board.

Arb...do you ever take this place off line for 'repairs'?

I'm disappointed they didn't provide a link to Bountiful... biggrin (joking...)

Well, thanks for getting to the bottom of it, Bok!

Ray, you are correct, it would have been the least that they could do... to simply post a link to , Bountiful.

I've been wondering what is up there and what they meant about the email spam.
Oh well, my other board I like to visit is down too, I guess it is a sign.

Boards can be difficult to manage.  My family history board was hacked and defaced once.  I kept on having to delete spam registrations.  Regular updates have to be made to stay ahead of the hackers and such.  Activeboard probably does most of their updates at night when it is not noticed but the webmaster for OSC's websites is probably a volunteer who has to do it during the day when it is more noticeable.

By the way, it appears all OSC sites are down this morning.

We've had our share of technical problems, including being offline a couple of times. Activeboard does seem to be pretty good lately about avoiding that.

In one sense, that news upsets / worries (even though I haven't been a part of that forum for 8 months now)... solely in the sense that now security seemed to be lacking... (of course, maybe this will wake some folks up to the reality of the need to be more discreet in their conversations as they are open for the world to see)

But, on the other hand, here is hoping the support and administration staff over there get the problem resolved quickly, because it sounds pretty serious if the hosting service required them to shut down until it is fixed.

I hope they recover soon. I really hate hacker crap... i've been on the net since before the WWW existed, and this sort of stuff does a lot to dampen my spirits about the whole system's viability. Once upon a time it was just about kids being jerks, defacing property mostly because it could be done, but now it's more nefarious. Many of these hacker types are now being embraced by hostile governments and criminal elements of society.

It makes me so, so, so... upset.

It makes me wanna purchase a firearm.

Now that I have a job, I might just have to put my money where my mouth is... The conservative in me thinks I should contribute... the liberal in me really likes mooching off the kindness of others... :)

Nauvoo is paid for by Orson Scott Card, who has sold many, many books and can therefore afford to pay out of pocket for the traffic, server, software, etc. Bountiful is run by me, and since I have nowhere near the reserves that OSC does, I ask people to donate if they can.
Before Bok was kind enough to be the first to pay, we had ads on this site. Some of them were ads for Hooters. Besides, there are several other benefits to having this site paid for. One of them is that we have a nicer address. You can remember bountiful.activeboard.com a whole lot more easily than you can remember the old address (which began www.activeboard.com, and then had a forum number and some other hard to remember numbers and letters).
We also have other cool features which aren't available with the free version.

C'mon, we just need $9.60 for the next month. That's what, a pack of diapers for your young one? You can do without that, can't you?

Oh wait, that's the wrong approach.

$9.60 is what, one or two days of eating out for lunch instead of packing a lunch? Surely you can make such a small sacrifice for the board. biggrin

While I do not discuss my personal preferences as regards female beauty on anonymous internet message boards, suffice it to say that if you knew my wife it would be abundantly clear what I prefer. She is, after all, the standard by which all female beauty must be judged. biggrin

To be honest, I don't know. But there must be an option, because we have had two anonymous donaters. Click on the link at the bottom of the page and explore.

No, no, that is also the wrong approach for getting donations, particularly for those of us who already pack our lunch every day.  wink.gif

No, it needs to be something along the lines of "For less than the cost of a month's worth of dial-up service, you can help provide hope to a whole community of the downtrodden in cyberspace.  Every penny of every dollar you donate to Bountiful Cyber Friends goes to provide such basic necessities to bringing these unfortunate souls beyond mere existence in the internet to things, which for them has only been a dream beyond imagination, such as stimulating and LDS based conversation free from transfatty acids and synthetic poo crystals."

biggrin

BTW, just because Coco was nice enough to take care of our needs for next month doesn't mean that we are turning away further donations. For instance, if we got 10 months worth of donations, we could prepay for an entire year.

Mahonri, I think you need to sell your Beemer and consecrate the funds to the cause! rofl.gif With the proceeds of selling your Beemer, we could end causing a forced buy out of "The Board that shall not be named..." bwa-ha-ha! devilish.gif

Must... resist... urge... to think... in business... terms... as it... would be... a poor... merger & acquisition... we'ld probably... end up... having to sell... it later... at a loss... doh.gif

p.s. Coco, you only get to have your name up there until someone else makes a donation. wink.gif

What is the full monthly amount needed for the subscription level we're at again, arbi? Something like $14.95, isn't it?

Hey Cat,

What do you call someone who sells someone else's car to force the acquisition of someone else's property?

A liberal.

doh.gif Hmmm... there has to be a way that it can be made to look non-liberal...

idea I know!  We shall call it "Eminent Domain"... we'll condemn Mahonri's Beemer as unfit to drive because we have the opportunity to redevelop the neighborhood for a rich corporate developer who will create a synergy that will exponentially impact the subscriber base of the combined forums in a positive manner.

I keep a veil over my wife, else all men would go insanely mad with jealousy and lust and would kill themselves in duels over her affection and her favor... And she hates that. I'm really doing the whole world a favor by sacrificing in this way... It's a service to all men and women...
