The lawyer thing made me think. All Gonzalez had to do was say, "Yeah, they were fired for political reasons. They serve at the pleasure of the president. So what?" Instead, he put up a weak defense, which made it look like he was complicit in shady dealings. The whole thing has given the republicans a black eye, and by extension, the things that republicans supposedly stand for. And to my mind, that's what the republicans have been doing lately. They supposedly stand for something good, like traditional marriage. But they make a weak argument. They wind up helping the democrats prove their case, and then no one listens when someone comes along with a cogent, well thought out argument.

You make it sound like if they made a great argument the general public and media would somehow just get it.
Not really. There are many people who will deny something even if the facts stare them in the face. All I'm saying is that the Republicans lately have been helping the democrats by making weak arguments in support of good things. You'll never convince everyone, but at least make an impassioned, cogent support of what's right.

A percentage of the general public would get it if the Republicans would communicate instead of this mealy mouth stuff. Maybe enough to influence some elections.
But I guess we'll never know until the Republicans actually do it.
Anyone watch the old talk show hosted by Wally George? He was quite the character. He espoused the whole set of republican beliefs, but by and large gave republicans a bad name. And you're right, Randy, we'll never know how many would follow republican beliefs unless they stop the mealy mouthed stuff.

Do average americans really care about this story. Can they even identify Alberto Gonzales if shown his picture in a line up with two other politicians. This story doesn't matter to anyone outside the beltway and the media.
