Where did this doctrine come from?? I did some quick Googling, and found this, which is very enlightening:

Excerpt:
Who said, "The constitution will hang by a thread, and it will be saved by the Elders of Israel?"
SHORT ANSWER: These are Harold B. Lee's words based on John Taylor's extrapolation of Brigham Young's and Orson Hyde's expression of an idea originating with Joseph Smith.

The Prophecy of Joseph Smith on the United StatesAnd the Constitution Hanging by a Thread(and related prophecies) Prophecy of Joseph Smith (March 10, 1844): Even this nation will be on the verge of crumbling to pieces and tumbling to the ground and when the Constitution is on the brink of ruin this people will be the staff upon which the nation shall lean and they shall bear the Constitution away from the very verge of destruction. (Source: Joseph Smith Papers, LDS Church Historical Archives, Box 1, March 10, 1844; D. Michael Stewart, Ensign, Vol. 6, No. 6, June 1976, pp. 64-65; See also, W. Cleon Skousen, "Prophecy and the Constitution," Audio Tape, 90 min., Ensign Publishing Company, Distributed by Sounds of Zion, Sandy, Utah.) Revelation to Joseph Smith (1831): Verily, Verily, saith the Lord, your Redeemer, even Jesus Christ . . . Verily, I say unto you, that the day of vexation and vengeance is nigh at the doors of this nation, when wicked, ungodly, and daring men will rise up in wrath and might, and go forth in anger, like as the dust is driven by a terrible wind; and they will be the means of the destruction of the government and cause the death and misery of many souls; but the faithful among my people shall be preserved in holy places during all these tribulations. (Source: Revelation given to Joseph Smith, July 17, 1831, west of Jackson County, Missouri, contained in a letter from W. W. Phelps to Brigham Young, dated August 12, 1861, Joseph Smith Collection, Church Historian's Office.)
Prophecy of Joseph Smith (1833): And now I am prepared to say by the authority of Jesus Christ, that not many years shall pass away before the United States shall present such a scene of bloodshed as has not a parallel in the history of our nation; pestilence, hail, famine, and earthquake will sweep the wicked of this generation from off the face of the land, to open and prepare the way for the return of the lost tribes of Israel from the north country. (Source: Documentary History of the Church, Vol.1, p. 315-316, January 4, 1833)
Prophecy of Joseph Smith (February 6, 1840): I arrived safely at Nauvoo, after a wearisome journey (to Washington D.C.), through alternate snow and mud, having witnessed many vexatious movements in government officers, whose sole object should be the peace and prosperity and happiness of the whole people; but instead of this, I discovered that popular clamor and personal aggrandizement were the ruling principles of those in authority; and my heart faints within me when I see, by the visions of the Almighty, the end of this nation, if she continues to disregard the cries and petitions of her virtuous citizens, as she has done, and is now doing. (Source: Documentary History of the Church, Vol. 4, p. 89)
Prophecy of Joseph Smith (May 18, 1843): I prophesy in the name of the Lord God of Israel, unless the United States redress the wrongs committed upon the Saints in the state of Missouri and punish the crimes committed by her officers that in a few years the government will be utterly overthrown and wasted, and there will not be so much as a potsherd left. (Source: Documentary History of the Church, Vol. 5, p. 394) Prophecy of Joseph Smith (December 16, 1843): While discussing the petition to Congress, I prophesied by virtue of the holy Priesthood vested in me, and in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, that if Congress will not hear our petition and grant us protection, they shall be broken up as a government. (Source: Documentary History of the Church, Vol 6. p. 116)
Prophecy of Joseph Smith: They shall have mobbing to their hearts content, if they do not redress the wrongs of the Latter-day Saints. Mobs will not decrease, but will increase until the whole government becomes a mob, and eventually it will be State against State, city against city, neighborhood against neighborhood. The dream of Joseph Smith (March 10, 1843), as related by William Clayton: He [Joseph] also related the following dream:"I dreamed that a silver-headed old man came to see me, and said he was invaded by a gang of robbers, who were plundering his neighbors and threatening destruction to all his subjects. He had heard that I always sought to defend the oppressed, and he had come to hear with his own ears what answer I would give him. I answered, 'If you will make out the papers and show that you are not the aggressor, I will call out the Legion and defend you while I have a man to stand by me.' The old man then turned to go away. When he got a little distance he turned suddenly round and said I must call out the Legion and go, and he would have the papers ready when I arrived, and says he, 'I have any amount of men which you can have under your command.'" Elder Hyde gave this interpretation: "The old man represents the government of these United States who will be invaded by a foreign foe, probably England. The U. S. government will call on you to defend probably all this Western Territory, and will offer you any amount of men you may need for that purpose." (Source: Journal of William Clayton, entry for Sunday, April 2, 1843. There is a note in the entry saying that the dream was actually related on March 10, about 3 weeks or so before it was recorded.)
Prophecy of Joseph Smith, as recorded by Mosiah Lyman Hancock (June 19, 1844), commonly known as the "Hancock Prophecy": There will be two great political parties in this country. One will be called the Republican, and the other the Democrat party. These two will go to war and out of these two parties will spring another party which will be the Independent American Party. The United States will spend her strength and means warring in foreign lands, until other nations will say, "Let's divide up the lands of United States." Then the people of the U.S. will unite and swear by the blood of their forefathers, that the land will not be divided. Then the country will go to war, and they will fight until one half of the U.S. army will give up, and the rest will continue to struggle. They will keep on until they are very ragged and discouraged, and almost ready to give up, when the boys from the mountains will rush forth in time to save the American Army from defeat and ruin. And they will say, "Brethren, we are glad you have come. Give us men, henceforth, who can talk with God." Then you will have friends, but you will save the country when it's liberty hangs by a hair, as it were. Prophecy of Joseph Smith, as recorded by James Burgess (May 1843): In the month of May 1843 several miles east of Nauvoo the Nauvoo Legion was on parade and review, at the close of which Joseph Smith made some remarks upon our condition as a people, and upon our future prospects, contrasting our present condition with our past trials and persecutions by the hands of our enemies. Also upon the Constitution and Government of the United States, stating that the time would come when the Constitution and Government would hang by a brittle thread and would be ready to fall into other hands, but this people the Latter day Saints will step forth and save it . . .I James Burgess was present and testify to the above. Prophecy of Joseph Smith, as recorded by Martha Jane Knowlton Coray (July 19, 1840): We shall build the Zion of the Lord in peace until the servants of that Lord shall begin to lay the foundation of a great and high watch-tower, and then shall they begin to say within themselves, "What need hath my Lord of this tower seeing this is a time of peace?" Then the Enemy shall come as a thief in the night and scatter the servants abroad. When the seed of these Twelve Olive trees are scattered abroad they will wake up the Nations of the whole Earth. [D&C 101:10-12,43-62] Even this Nation will be on the very verge of crumbling to pieces and tumbling to the ground. And when the Constitution is upon the brink of ruin this people will be the Staff upon which the Nation shall lean and they shall bear the Constitution away from the very verge of destruction. Prophecy of Joseph Smith, as recorded by Parley P. Pratt (January 21, 1841): The government is fallen and needs redeeming. It is guilty of blood and cannot stand as it is now is, but will come so near desolation as to hang as it were by a single hair! Then the servants go to the nations of the earth, and gather the strength of the Lord's house! A mighty army! And this is the redemption of Zion when the saints shall have redeemed that government and reinstated it in all its purity and glory![D&C 101:43](Source: George A. Prophecy of Joseph Smith, according to Brigham Young: The time will come when the destiny of the nation will hang upon a single thread. At that critical juncture, this people will step forth and save it from the threatened destruction. (Source: Journal of Discourses, Vol. 7, p. 15, July 4, 1854)
Prophecy of Joseph Smith, according to Orson Hyde: The time would come when the Constitution and the country would be in danger of an overthrow; and . . . if the Constitution be saved at all, it will be by the Elders of this Church. (Source: Journal of Discourses, Vol.6, p. 152, January 3, 1858)
D&C 101:10-12;43-62;76-91 (received by Joseph Smith):I have sworn, and the decree hath gone forth by a former commandment which I have given unto you, that I would let fall the sword of mine indignation in behalf of my people; and even as I have said, it shall come to pass. Mine indignation is soon to be poured out without measure upon all nations; and this will I do when the cup of their iniquity is full. And in that day all who are found upon the watch-tower, or in other words, all mine Israel, shall be saved . . .And now, I will show unto you a parable, that you may know my will concerning the redemption of Zion. A certain nobleman had a spot of land, very choice; and he said unto his servants: Go ye unto my vineyard, even upon this very choice piece of land, and plant twelve olive-trees; And set watchmen round about them, and build a tower, that one may overlook the land round about, to be a watchman upon the tower, that mine olive-trees may not be broken down when the enemy shall come to spoil and take upon themselves the fruit of my vineyard. Now, the servants of the nobleman went and did as their lord commanded them, and planted the olive-trees, and built a hedge round about, and set watchmen, and began to build a tower. And while they were yet laying the foundation thereof, they began to say among themselves: And what need hath my lord of this tower? And consulted for a long time, saying among themselves: What need hath my lord of this tower, seeing this is a time of peace? Might not this money be given to the exchangers? For there is no need of these things. And while they were at variance one with another they became very slothful, and they hearkened not unto the commandments of their lord. And the enemy came by night, and broke down the hedge; and the servants of the nobleman arose and were affrighted, and fled; and the enemy destroyed their works, and broke down the olive-trees. Now, behold, the nobleman, the lord of the vineyard, called upon his servants, and said unto them, Why! what is the cause of this great evil? Ought ye not to have done even as I commanded you, and- after ye had planted the vineyard, and built the hedge round about, and set watchmen upon the walls thereof- built the tower also, and set a watchman upon the tower, and watched for my vineyard, and not have fallen asleep, lest the enemy should come upon you? And behold, the watchman upon the tower would have seen the enemy while he was yet afar off; and then ye could have made ready and kept the enemy from breaking down the hedge thereof, and saved my vineyard from the hands of the destroyer. And the lord of the vineyard said unto one of his servants: Go and gather together the residue of my servants, and take all the strength of mine house, which are my warriors, my young men, and they that are of middle age also among all my servants, who are the strength of mine house, save those only whom I have appointed to tarry; And go ye straightway unto the land of my vineyard, and redeem my vineyard; for it is mine; I have bought it with money. Therefore, get ye straightway unto my land; break down the walls of mine enemies; throw down their tower, and scatter their watchmen. And inasmuch as they gather together against you, avenge me of mine enemies, that by and by I may come with the residue of mine house and possess the land. And the servant said unto his lord: When shall these things be? And he said unto his servant: When I will; go ye straightway, and do all things whatsoever I have commanded you; And this shall be my seal and blessing upon you- a faithful and wise steward in the midst of mine house, a ruler in my kingdom. And his servant went straightway, and did all things whatsoever his lord commanded him; and after many days all things were fulfilled . . . And again I say unto you, those who have been scattered by their enemies, it is my will that they should continue to importune for redress, and redemption, by the hands of those who are placed as rulers and are in authority over you- According to the laws and constitution of the people, which I have suffered to be established, and should be maintained for the rights and protection of all flesh, according to just and holy principles; That every man may act in doctrine and principle pertaining to futurity, according to the moral agency which I have given unto him, that every man may be accountable for his own sins in the day of judgment. Therefore, it is not right that any man should be in bondage one to another. And for this purpose have I established the Constitution of this land, by the hands of wise men whom I raised up unto this very purpose, and redeemed the land by the shedding of blood. Now, unto what shall I liken the children of Zion? I will liken them unto the parable of the woman and the unjust judge, for men ought always to pray and not to faint, which saith- There was in a city a judge which feared not God, neither regarded man. And there was a widow in that city, and she came unto him, saying: Avenge me of mine adversary. And he would not for a while, but afterward he said within himself: Though I fear not God, nor regard man, yet because this widow troubleth me I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. Thus will I liken the children of Zion. Let them importune at the feet of the judge; And if he heed them not, let them importune at the feet of the governor; And if the governor heed them not, let them importune at the feet of the president; And if the president heed them not, then will the Lord arise and come forth out of his hiding place, and in his fury vex the nation; And in his hot displeasure, and in his fierce anger, in his time, will cut off those wicked, unfaithful, and unjust stewards, and appoint them their portion among hypocrites, and unbelievers; Even in outer darkness, where there is weeping, and wailing, and gnashing of teeth.
Prophecy of Brigham Young: The nations will consume each other, and the Lord will suffer them to bring it about. It does not require much talent or tact to get up opposition these days. You see it rife in communities, in meetings, in neighborhoods, and in cities. That is the knife that will cut down this Government. The axe is laid at the root of the tree, and every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit will be hewn down. (Source: Journal of Discourses, 8:143)
Prophecy of John Taylor (General Conference, 1879): Were we surprised when the last terrible war (the Civil War) took place here in the United States? No . . . You will see worse things than that, for God will lay his hand upon this nation and they will feel it more terribly than ever they have done before. There will be more bloodshed, more ruin, more devastation than ever they have seen before. Write it down! You will see it come to pass; it is only just starting in . . . There is yet to come a sound of war, trouble and distress, in which brother will be arrayed against brother, father against son, son against father, a scene of desolation and destruction that will permeate our land until it will be a vexation to hear the report thereof. (Source: Journal of Discourses, 20:318)
Another Prophecy of John Taylor (1879): We have got this kingdom to build up; and it is not a phantom, but a reality. We have to do it, God expects it at our hands . . . We have got to go on and progress in these things. We have got to establish a government upon the principle of righteousness, justice, truth and equality and not according to the many false notions that exist among men. And then the day is not far distant when this nation will be shaken from centre to circumference. And now, you may write it down, any of you, and I will prophesy it in the name of God. And then will be fulfilled the prediction to be found in one of the revelations given through the prophet Joseph Smith. Those who will not take up their sword to fight against their neighbor must needs flee to Zion for safety. And they will come, saying, we do not know anything of the principles of your religion, but we perceive that you are an honest community; you administer justice and righteousness, and we want to live with you and receive the protection of your laws, but as for your religion we will talk about that some other time. Will we protect such people? Yes, all honorable men. When the people shall have torn to shreds the Constitution of the United States the Elders of Israel will be found holding it up to the nations of earth and proclaiming liberty and equal rights to all men, and extending the hand of fellowship to the oppressed of all nations. This is part of the programme, and as long as we do what is right and fear God, he will help us and stand by us under all circumstances. (Source: Journal of Discourses, 21:8)
Prophecy of Wilford Woodruff: The Congress of 1862, and the Supreme Judges of 1879, in their acts and decisions, have taken a dangerous and fearful step; their acts will sap the very foundation of our government, and it will rent asunder, and the God of heaven will hold them responsible for these things, for 'what men sow they will reap, and the measure they mete unto others will be meted unto them', saith the Lord. The Constitution once broken by the rulers of the land, there will be no stopping place until the nation is broken in pieces, and no power beneath the heavens can save this nation from the consequences thereof. (Source: Millennial Star, 41:243)
Another Prophecy of Wilford Woodruff (1880): The Lord . . . poured out His spirit upon me and opened the vision of my mind so that I could comprehend in a great measure the mind and will of God concerning the nation and concerning the inhabitants of Zion. I saw the wickedness of the nation, its abominations and corruptions and the judgments of God and the destruction that awaited it . . . On January 18th I was again given in a vision. It concerned the destiny of our nation and of Zion. My pillow was again wet by a fountain of tears as I beheld the judgments of God upon the wicked. I was strongly impressed that the Apostles and elders should warn the inhabitants of the earth. (Source: Matthias F. Cowley, Wilford Woodruff, p. 393. SLC, Deseret News, 1916)
Prophecy of Moses Thatcher (an early apostle): I have seen the end of this nation and it is terrible . . . I will tell you in the name of the Lord that a secret band will sap the life of this nation. (Source: Franklin Ward Historical Record, Franklin, Idaho. June 16, 1882; Crowther, Duane S., Prophecy-- Key to the Future, p. 53, Bookcraft, SLC, 1962)
Statement of Erastus Snow: We were told by the prophet Joseph Smith, that the United States Government and people would undermine one principle of the Constitution after another, until its whole fabric would be torn away, and that it would become the duty of the Latter-day Saints and those in sympathy with them to rescue it from destruction, and to maintain and sustain the principles of human freedom for which our fathers fought and bled. We look for these things to come in quick succession. (Source: Journal of Discourses, vol. 26, p. 226, May 31, 1885)
Statement of Charles W. Nibley: My brethren and sisters, I hope that we will go home from this Conference determined as a great body of people, to stand for law, order, righteousness, justice and peace on earth and good will among all men. I believe as the Prophet Joseph has written, that the day would come when there would be so much of disorder, of secret combinations taking the law into their own hands, tramping upon Constitutional rights and the liberties of the people, that the Constitution would hang as by a thread. Yes, but it will still hang, and there will be enough of good people, many who may not belong to our Church at all, people who have respect for law and for order, and for Constitutional rights, who will rally around with us and save the Constitution. I have never read that that thread would be cut. It will hang; the Constitution will abide and this civilization, that the Lord has caused to be built up, will stand fortified through the power of God, by putting from our hearts all that is evil, or that is wrong in the sight of God, by our living as we should live, acceptable to him. (Source: Conference Report, October 1922, p.40)
Another statement by Charles W. Nibley: Brethren and sisters, let me say in closing that we have it of record, that the prophet Joseph Smith said the time would come when through secret organizations taking the law into their own hands, not being governed by law or by due process of law, but becoming a law unto themselves, when, by those disintegrating activities, the Constitution of the United States would be so torn and rent asunder, and life and property and peace and security would he held of so little value, that the Constitution would, as it were, hang by a thread. But he never said, so far as I have heard, that that thread would be cut. I believe, with Elder Richards, that this Constitution will be preserved, but it will be preserved very largely in consequence of what the Lord has revealed and what this people, through listening to the Lord and being obedient, will help to bring about, to stabilize and give permanency and effect to the Constitution itself. That also is our mission. That also is what we are help to bring about, to stabilize and give permanency and effect to the Constitution itself. That also is our mission. That also is what we are here for. I glory in it. I praise God with all my heart and soul that I am a member of it. (Source: Conference Report, October 1923, p.62)
Statement of Ezra Taft Benson: America is a choice land. God raised up the Founding Fathers of the United States of America and established an inspired Constitution . . . I testify that wickedness is rapidly expanding in every segment of our society. (See D&C 84:49-53; 1:14-16.) It is more highly organized, more cleverly disguised, and more powerfully promoted than ever before. Secret combinations lusting for power, gain, and glory are flourishing. A secret combination that seeks to overthrow the freedom of all lands, nations, and countries is increasing its evil influence and control over America and the entire world. (See Ether 8:18-25.) Prophecy of Heber C. Kimball: J. Golden Kimball wrote: "Heber C. Kimball said it was revealed to him that the last great destruction of the wicked would be on the lakes near the Hill Cumorah." (Source: N. B. Lundwall, Inspired prophetic warnings to all inhabitants of the earth, 1940, p. 52).
Statement of Joseph F. Smith: As I stood upon the summit of the Hill Cumorah, in the midst of a vast multitude, only a few of whom belonged to the Church, I tried to picture the scenes of former days. Here were assembled vast armies filled with bitterness and bent on destruction. I thought of the great promises the Lord had made through his prophets concerning those who should possess this choice land, and how these promises were not fulfilled because the people violated his commandments. Here a people perished because of their extreme wickedness. There must be something in the destiny of things that would cause a repetition of this terrible scene on the same spot many centuries later. I reflected and wondered if this unhappy time would ever come when another still mightier people would incur the wrath of God because of wickedness and likewise perish. If so, would this same spot witness their destruction? (Source: Doctrines of Salvation, Vol. III, p. 242)
Prophecy of Brigham Young: The day will come when there will be large places of manufacture and storage constructed West of the Jordan River and there will be over three millions of people living there and Jordan River will practically run through the center of Salt Lake City. Statement of Brigham Young: An inland Empire will be established in these valleys of the mountains, which will be a place of refuge for millions of people to gather to, when the great day of the judgments of God comes upon the earth, and the righteous come here for safety. Our people will go East, West, North and South, but the day will come, when they will be glad to come back. We will be shut out from the rest of the world. Prophecy of Heber C. Kimball: I am very thankful that so many of the brethren have come in with handcarts; my soul rejoiced, my heart was filled and grew as big as a two-bushel basket. Two companies have come through safe and sound. Is this the end of it? No; there will be millions on millions that will come much in the same way, only they will not have handcarts, for they will take their bundles under their arms, and their children on their backs, and under their arms and flee. Prophecy of Brigham Young (1868): By and by there will be a gulf between the righteous and the wicked so that they cannot trade with each other and national intercourse will cease. (Source: Journal of Discourses, 12:284)
Prophecy of Heber C. Kimball: Lay up your stores, and take your silks and fine things, and exchange them for grain and such things as you need, and the time will come when we will be obliged to depend upon our own resources; for the time is not far distant when the curtain will be dropped between us and the United States. When that time comes, brethren and sisters, you will wish you had commenced sooner to make your own clothing. I tell you, God requires us to go into home manufacture; and prolong it as much as you like, you have got to do it. (Source: Journal of Discourses, 5:10)
Statement of Heber C. Kimball: I will tell you a dream which Brother Kesler had lately. He dreamed that there was a sack of gold and a cat placed before him, and that he had the privilege of taking which he pleased, whereupon he took the cat, and walked off with her. Why did he take the cat in preference to the gold? Because he could eat the cat, but not eat the gold. You may see about such times before you die. (Source: Journal of Discourses, 3:262)
Prophecy of Joseph Smith (May 6, 1843): When the great bear lays her paw on the lion the winding up scene is not far distant. (Source: Juvenile Instructor, March 15, 1890, p. 162; N. B. Lundwall, Inspired prophetic warnings to all inhabitants of the earth, 1940, p. 75)
Statement of Nephi Packard: My brother, Noah Packard, says that the heard the Prophet Joseph say that the next great (U.S. civil) war after the war of the rebellion (the Civil War of the 1860's between the North and the South) would commence in a little town now called Chicago but at that time it would have grown to be a very large city. And another brother told me that the Prophet said that the cause of the next great trouble of the United States would be the depreciation of the currency of the United States. I believe I have given you all the facts in as short and concise manner as possible. (Source: A. Milton Musser papers, LDS Church Archives, letter from Nephi Packard to A. Milton Musser, July 24, 1896.)
Statement of David Whitmer: Question: When will the temple be built in Independence? Answer: Right after the great tribulation is over. Question: What do you mean by that? Answer: A civil war more bloody and cruel than the rebellion. It will be the smashing up of this nation, about which time the second great work has to be done, a work like Joseph did, and the translation of the sealed plates and peace all over. (Source: Interview by Dr. Poulson with David Whitmer, Deseret News, Friday, August 16, 1878)
Statement of Rex E. Lee: A final area of constitutional interest unique to Latter-day Saints finds its source in the well-known "hanging by a thread" statements by the Prophet Joseph Smith. Similar statements have been reiterated by no fewer than six of his successors, including the current prophet . . . But in none of those quotations . . . has any Church leader ever been very specific as to the metaphor's meaning. Unfortunately, some members of the Church have been all too ready to offer their own explanations. The only thing consistent about these explanations is that in each instance, it was the Church member's own unresolved, often very private, grievance that supplied evidence that the thread was beginning to fray, sometimes beyond repair . . . In my view, this is another instance in which going beyond what our leaders have said can be misleading at best, and potentially fraught with mischief. Even though we have not been given the exact meaning of the prophets' statements about the Constitution hanging by a thread, the scriptures do define the conditions on which freedom in the land of America ultimately depends. I am satisfied that whatever else may eventually hang in the constitutional balance, this much is clear: The continuation of the blessings of liberty depends finally on our spiritual righteousness. As the Lord told the Jaredites in the Book of Ether, this is a "land of promise." And "whatsoever nation shall possess it shall be free from bondage, and from captivity, . . . if they will but serve the God of the land, who is Jesus Christ." If the people fail to keep this covenant, they "shall be swept off when the fullness of his wrath shall come upon them. And the fullness of his wrath cometh upon them when they are ripened in iniquity" (Ether 2:9-12). (Source: Rex E. Lee, The Constitution and the Restoration, BYU Speeches, 1991.)
Statement of Eliza R. Snow, Ogden, Utah, 1871: I heard the prophet say, The time will come when the government of these United States will be so nearly overthrown through its corruption, that the Constitution will hang as it were by a single hair, and the Latter-day Saintsthe Elders of Israelwill step forward to its rescue and save it. (Journal History, MSF 143 #28, July 24, 1871; D. Michael Stewart, Ensign, June 1976.)
Statement of Jedediah M. Grant to Mormon Battalion, February 6, 1855, Salt Lake City: What did the Prophet Joseph say? When the Constitution shall be tottering we shall be the people to save it from the hand of the foe. (Deseret News Weekly, January 19, 1870; D. Michael Stewart, Ensign, June 1976.)
Statement of Boyd K. Packer (2004): When Moroni was translating the twenty-four gold plates, he interrupted his narrative to speak directly to us in our day. He told of the Gadiantons and their bands (in our day we would call them gangs): Wherefore, O ye Gentiles [that is us], it is wisdom in God that these things should be shown unto you, that thereby ye may repent of your sins, and suffer not that these murderous combinations shall get above you, ... [He then warned us in unmistakable plainness]: Wherefore, the Lord commandeth you, when ye shall see these things come among you that ye shall awake to a sense of your awful situation, because of this secret combination which shall be among you; ... Wherefore, I, Moroni, am commanded to write these things that evil may be done away, and that the time may come that Satan may have no power upon the hearts of the children of men, but that they may be persuaded to do good continually, that they may come unto the fountain of all righteousness and be saved (Ether 8:2324, 26). When the Saints in Missouri were suffering great persecutions, the Lord said that the Constitution of the United States was given that every man may act in doctrine and principle pertaining to futurity, according to the moral agency which I have given unto him. [Notice that it does not say free agency, it says moral agency. The agency we have is a moral agency.] ... For this purpose have I established the Constitution of this land, by the hands of wise men whom I raised up unto this very purpose, and redeemed the land by the shedding of blood (D&C 101:78, 80; emphasis added). The present major political debate centers on values and morals and the Constitution. There occurs from time to time reference to the Constitution hanging by a thread. President Brigham Young said: The general Constitution of our country is good, and a wholesome government could be framed upon it; for it was dictated by the invisible operations of the Almighty. ... Will the Constitution be destroyed? No. It will be held inviolate by this people; and as Joseph Smith said "the time will come when the destiny of this nation will hang upon a single thread, and at this critical juncture, this people will step forth and save it from the threatened destruction." It will be so.23 I do not know when that day will come or how it will come to pass. I feel sure that when it does come to pass, among those who will step forward from among this people will be men who hold the Holy Priesthood and who carry as credentials a bachelor or doctor of law degree. And women, also, of honor. And there will be judges as well. Others from the world outside the Church will come, as Colonel Thomas Kane did, and bring with them their knowledge of the law to protect this people. We may one day stand alone, but we will not change or lower our standards or change our course. (Source: "On the Shoulders of Giants", Brigham Young University J. The Prophecy of George Albert Smith (1945): The story goes that in 1945 President George Albert Smith was visiting his relatives, the Lyman M. Horne family. Lyman's son David Hughes Horne, a young man at the time, extracted and summarized some of what the Prophet George Albert Smith had said from a recording of the conversation on a wire tape recorder. The recorder has not been found, so Mr. Horne's account is all we have to go on. The details are interesting, but it seems to be one of those conditional prophecies where certain things did not happen because people were righteous enough to avoid it. For example details about the Soviet Union invading America will no longer come to pass, because the time period that it could have happened in has long passed. Nevertheless, at some future time, we may indeed be attacked by Russia as being one of the nations involved in the war of the Constitution Hanging by a Thread. So here we will be concentrating on the details of the prophecy that may still apply to a future time. Mr. Horne reports that George Albert Smith said: "I have had a troublesome vision of another great and terrible war that made the war that just ended [i.e. WWII] look like a training exercise, and people died like flies . . . He continued that the U.S. would be bound by numerous alliances and would take away the weapons owned by the people . . . "Then he said, "The aftermath was dreadful. Think of the worst, most difficult times of the depression." He turned to us children and said, "You wont remember the depression," which was true. He repeated to our parents. "Think of the worst condition of the depression. Can you think of something?" To which our father answered, "Oh yes!" Then President Smith continued, "You know how Sunday School picnics are complete with salad, chicken, root beer, and dessert, and everyone has a wonderful time. That worst time of the depression will seem like a Sunday School picnic when compared with how conditions will be after that Great War . . ." (Source: David N. Balmforth, America's Coming Crisis- prophetic warnings, divine destiny, Horizon Publishers, Bountiful, UT, 1998, pp. 123-127; R. K. Young, "..As a Thief in the Night", South Salt Lake, UT, 1991, pp. 51-52, 56.) Confirming the wording used by Elder Smith in this account are two statements from General Conference that he made: I fear the time is coming . . . unless we can call the people of this world to repent of their sins and turn from the error of their ways, that the great war [World War II] that has just passed will be an insignificant thing, as far as calamity is concerned, compared to that which is before us. (Source: Conference Report, October 9, 1946, p. 149, emphasis added.) Brethren and sisters, let us go to our homes. If our houses are not in order, let us set them in order. Let us renew our determination to honor God and keep his commandments, to love one another, to make our homes the abiding place of peace. Each of us can contribute to that in the homes in which we live. It will not be long until calamities will overtake the human family unless there is speedy repentance. It will not be long before those who are scattered over the face of the earth by millions will die like flies because of what will come. A Dream of Charles D. Evans, a Patriarch of Springville, UT (1894): While I lay pondering, in deep solitude, on the events of the present my mind was drawn into a reverie such as I had never felt before. A strong solitude for my imperiled country utterly excluded every other thought and raised my feelings to a point of intensity I did not think it possible to endure. While in this solemn, profound and painful reverie of mind, to my infinite surprise, a light appeared in my room, which seemed to be soft and silvery as that diffused from a northern star. At the moment of its appearance the acute feeling I had experienced instantly yielded to one of calm tranquility. Although it may have been at the hour of midnight, and the side of the globe whereon I was situated, was excluded from the sunlight, yet all was light and bright and warm as an Italian landscape at noon; but the heat was softer or more subdued. As I gazed upward, I saw descending through my bedroom roof, with a gently gliding movement, a personage clothed in white apparel, whose countenance was smoothly serene, his features regular, and the flashes of his eye seemed to shoot forth scintillations, to use an earthly comparison, strongly resembling those reflected from a diamond under an intensely illuminated electric light, which dazzled but did not bewilder. Those large, deep, inscrutable eyes were presently fixed upon mine, when instantly placing his hands upon my forehead his touch produced an indescribable serenity and calmness, a calmness not born of earth, but at once peaceful, delightful and heavenly. My whole being was imbued with a joy unspeakable. All feelings of sorrow instantly vanished. Those lines and shadows which care and sorrow impress upon us were dispelled as a deep fog before a blazing sun. In the eyes of my heavenly visitor, for such he appeared to me, there was a sort of lofty pity and tenderness infinitely stronger than any such feeling I ever saw manifested in ordinary mortals. His very calm appeared like a vast ocean stillness, at once overpowering to every agitated emotion. "Son, I perceive thou hast grave anxieties over the perilous state of thy country, that thy soul has felt deep sorrow for its future. I have therefore come to thy relief and to tell thee of the causes that have led to this peril. Hear me attentively. Seventy-one years ago, after an awful apostasy of centuries, in which all nations were shrouded in spiritual darkness, when angels had withdrawn themselves, the voice of prophets hushed, and the light of Urim and Thummim shone not, and the vision of the seers was closed, while heaven itself shed not a ray of gladness to lighten a dark world, when Babel ruled and Satan laughed, and church and priesthood had taken their upward flight, and the voice of nations, possessing the books of the Jewish prophets, had ruled against vision and against Urim, against the further visits of angels, and against the doctrine of a church of apostles and prophets, thou knowest that then appeared a mighty angel with the solemn announcement of the hour of judgment, the burden of whose instructions pointed to dire calamities upon the present generation. This, therefore, is the cause of what thou seest and the end of the wicked hasteneth." My vision now became extended in a marvelous manner, and the import of the past labors of the Elders was made plain to me. I saw multitudes fleeing to the place of safety in our mountain heights. The church was established in the wilderness. Simultaneously the nation had reached an unparalleled prosperity, wealth unbounded, new territory was acquired, commerce extended, finance strengthened, confidence was maintained, and peoples abroad pointed to her as the model nation, the ideal of the past realized and perfected, the embodiment of the liberty sung by poets, and sought for by sages. "But," continued the messenger, "Thou beholdest a change. Confidence is lost. Wealth is arrayed against labor, labor against wealth, yet the land abounds with plenty for food and raiment, and silver and gold are in abundance. Thou seest also that letters written by a Jew have wrought great confusion in the finances of the nation which, together with the policy of many wealthy ones, has produced distress and do presage further sorrow." Factions now sprang up as if by magic; capital had entrenched itself against labor throughout the land; labor was organized against capital. The voice of the wise sought to tranquilize these two powerful factors in vain. Excited multitudes ran wildly about; strikes increased; lawlessness sought the place of regular government. At this juncture I saw a banner floating in air whereon was written the words Bankruptcy, Famine, Floods, Fire, Cyclones, Blood, Plague. Mad with rage men and women rushed upon each other. Blood flowed down the streets of cities like water. The demon of bloody hate had enthroned itself on the citadel of reason; the thirst for blood was intenser than that of the parched tongue for water. Thousands of bodies lay entombed in the streets. Men and women fell dead from the terror inspired from fear. Rest was but the precursor of the bloody work of the morrow. All around lay the mournfulness of a past in ruins. Monuments erected to perpetuate the names of the noble and brave were ruthlessly destroyed by combustibles. A voice now sounded aloud these words, "Yet once again I shake not the earth only, but also heaven. And this word yet once again signifies the removing of things that are shaken, as of things that are made; that those things that cannot be shaken may remain." Earthquakes rent the earth in vast chasms, which engulfed multitudes; terrible groanings and wailings filled the air; the shrieks of the suffering were indescribably awful. Water wildly rushed in from the tumultuous ocean whose very roaring under the mad rage of the fierce cyclone, was unendurable to the ear. Cities were swept away in an instant, missiles were hurled through the atmosphere at a terrible velocity and people were carried upward only to descend in unrecognized mass. Islands appeared where ocean waves once tossed the gigantic steamer. In other parts voluminous flames, emanating from vast fires, rolled with fearful velocity destroying life and property in their destructive course. The seal of the dread menace of despair was stamped on every healing visage; men fell exhausted, appalled and trembling. Every element of agitated nature seemed a demon of wrathful fury. Dense clouds, blacker than midnight darkness, whose thunders reverberated with intonations which shook the earth, obscured the sunlight. Darkness reined, unrivalled and supreme. Again the light shone, revealing an atmosphere tinged with a leaden hue, which was the precursor of an unparalleled plague whose first symptoms were recognized by a purple spot which appeared on the cheek, or on the back of the hand, and which, invariably, enlarged until it spread over the entire surface of the body, producing certain death. Mothers, on sight of it, cast away their children as though they were poisonous reptiles. This plague, in grown persons, rotted the eyes in their sockets and consumed the tongue as would a powerful acid or an intense heat. Wicked men, suffering under its writhing agonies, cursed God and died, as they stood on their feet, and the birds of prey feasted on their carcasses. I saw in my dream the messenger again appear with a vile in his right hand, who addressing me said: "Thou knowest somewhat of the chemistry taught in the schools of human learning, behold now a chemistry sufficiently powerful to change the waters of the sea." He then poured out his vile upon the sea and it became putrid as the blood of a dead man, and every living soul therein died. Other plagues followed I forbear to record. A foreign power had invaded the nation which, from every human indication, it appeared would seize the government and supplant it with monarchy. I stood trembling at the spect, when, lo, a power arose in the west which declared itself in favor of the constitution in its original form; to this suddenly rising power every lover of constitutional rights and liberties throughout the nation gave hearty support. This struggle was fiercely contested, but the stars and stripes floated in the breeze, and, bidding defiance to opposition, waved proudly over the land. Among the many banners I saw, was one inscribed thus: "The government based on the constitution, now and forever;" on another "Liberty of Conscience, social, religious, and political." The light of the gospel which had but dimly shown because of abomination, now burst forth with a luster that filled the earth. Cities appeared in every direction, one of which, in the center of the continent, was an embodiment of architectural science after the pattern of eternal perfections, whose towers glittered with a radiance emanating from the sparkling of emeralds, rubies, diamonds and other precious stones set in a canopy of gold and so elaborately and skillfully arranged as to shed forth a brilliancy which dazzled and enchanted the eye, excited admiration and developed a taste for the beautiful, beyond anything man had ever conceived. Fountains of crystal water shot upward their transparent jets which in the brilliant sunshine, formed ten thousand rainbow tints at once delightful to the eye. Gardens, the perfections of whose arrangement confound all our present attempts at genius, bedecked with flowers of varied hue to develop and refine the taste, and strengthen the love for these natures chastest adornments. Schools and universities were erected, to which all had access; in the latter Urims were placed, for the study of the past, present and future, and for obtaining a knowledge of the heavenly bodies, and of the constructions of worlds and universes. The inherent properties of matter, its arrangements, laws, mutual relations were revealed and taught and made plain as the primer lesson of a child. The conflicting theories of geologists regarding the formation and age of the earth were settled forever. All learning was based on eternal certainty. Angels brought forth the treasures of knowledge which had lain hid in the womb of the dumb and distant past. The appliances for making learning easy surpass all conjecture. Chemistry was rendered extremely simple, by the power which the Urims conferred on man of looking into and through the elements of every kind; a stone furnished no more obstruction to human vision than the air itself. Not only were the elements and all their changes and transformations plainly understood but the construction, operations, and laws of mind were thus rendered equally plain as those which governed the coarser elements. While looking through the Urim and Thummim I was amazed at a transformation, which even now is to me marvelous beyond description, clearly showing the manner in which particles composing the inorganic kingdom of nature are conducted upward to become a part of organic forms; another astounding revelation was a view clearly shown me of the entire circulation of the blood both in man and animals. After seeing these things and gazing once more upon the beautiful city, the following passage of Scripture sounded in my ears: "Out of Zion the perfection of beauty God shineth." On this I awoke to find all a dream. I have written the foregoing, which is founded on true principle, under the caption of a dream, partly to instruct and partly to check the folly of reading silly novels now so prevalent. Charles D. Conclusion It is obvious from the scriptures that if this nation does not repent, it will be destroyed. We can conclude that the saints will not all be exempt, but we have been told to stand in holy places. It is not clear exactly what will happen, as the many prophecies about the Constitution hanging by a thread are fragmentary and most are second-person accounts. This does not mean they should be dismissed. It is possible that the details of this is coming peacemeal. It is clear that the scenario is not fully revealed about how it will come to pass. Rather, than dismissing the accounts, we should see the common threads woven through them and come to a basic conclusion which we can be pretty sure of, regardless of the details: (1) There will be civil wars and internal strife in this country. This will be as a result of corruption and secret combinations. (2) Other countries will invade this country at some point. Whether this will happen as a result of the civil unrest which will weaken the country, it is not clear. (3) Some power will try to sieze power and overthrow the government. It is not clear if this is an internal secret combination, a foreign foe, or both. (4) The elders of Israel will step forward to save it, either by taking political action, or by military force. It is not clear which. Or perhaps, there is more than one way that the scenario could unfold. But either way, the Elders of Israel will be the factor that will save the country from utter destruction. All of these four factors are themes throughout all of the accounts. But these accounts from Church members are not all we have. Surprisingly enough, we also see it coming from the Father of our Country. George Washington's Vision at Valley Forge, in the winter of 1777 What the Father of his Country Saw of its Weal and Woe, more than a Century Ago. The last time I ever saw Anthony Sherman was on the Fourth of July, 1859, in Independence Square. He was then ninety-nine years old, his dimming eyes rekindled as he gazed upon Independence Hall, which he had come to visit once more before he was gathered home. "What time is it?" he said, raising his trembling eyes to the clock in the steeple, and endeavoring to shade the former with a trembling hand. "What time is it? I can't see so well as I used to." "Half-past three." Come then," he continued, "let us go into the Hall; I want to tell you an incident of Washington's life- one which no one alive knows of except myself; and if you live you will before long see it verified. Mark me, I am not superstitious, but you will see it verified." Reaching the visitor's room, in which the sacred relics of our country are preserved we sat down upon one of the old-fashioned wooden benches, and my venerable friend related to me the following narrative, which from the peculiarity of our national affairs at the present time, I have been induced to give to the world. I give it as nearly as possible in his own words: "When the bold action of our Congress, in asserting the independence of the colonies, became known in the world, we were laughed at and scoffed at as silly, presumptuous rebels, whom the British grenadiers would tame into submission; but, undaunted, we prepared to make good what we said. The keen encounter seems pleasant for those of the present generation to talk and write of the days of '76, but they little know, neither can they imagine, the trials and sufferings of those fearful days. "And there is one thing I much fear, and that is, that the American people do not properly appreciate the boon of freedom. Party spirit is becoming stronger, and unless it is checked, will, at no distant day, undermine and tumble into ruin the noble spirit of the Republic. But let me hasten my narrative. "From the opening of the Revolution, we experienced all phases of fortune- now good and now ill; at one time victorious, at another conquered. "The darkest period we ever had, however, was, I think when Washington, after several reverses, retreated to Valley Forge, where he resolved to pass the winter of 1777. Ah! I have seen saw the tears coursing down our dear commander's careworn cheek, as he would be conversing with a confidential officer about the condition of his poor soldiers. You have doubtless heard the story of Washington's going to the thicket to pray. Well, it is not only true, but he used often to pray in secret for aid and comfort from God, the interposition of whose divine providence brought us safely through those dark days of tribulation. "One day- I remember well- the chilly winds whistled and howled through the leafless trees, though the sky was cloudless and the sun shone brightly, he remained alone in his quarters nearly the whole of the alone. When he came out, I noticed that his face was a shade paler than usual and that there seemed to be something on his mind of more than ordinary importance. Returning just before dark, he dispatched an orderly to the quarters of the officer I mentioned, who was presently in attendance. "After preliminary conversation of some half an hour, Washington, gazing upon his companion with a strange look of dignity which he alone could command, said to the latter: "'I do not know whether it is owing to anxiety of my mind, or what, but this afternoon, as I was sitting at this table engaged in preparing a dispatch, something seemed to disturb me. Looking up, I beheld standing opposite me a singularly beautiful figure. So astonished was I, for I had given strict orders not to be disturbed, that it was some moments before I found language to inquire the cause of her presence. A second, a third and even a fourth time did I repeat my question, but received no answer from my mysterious visitor except a slight raising of her eyes. "'By this time I felt strange sensations spreading through me. I would have risen but the riveted gaze of the being before me rendered volition impossible. I assayed once more to address her, but my tongue had become useless, as though it had become paralyzed. "'A new influence, mysterious, potent, irresistible, took possession of me. All I could do was to gaze steadily, vacantly at my unknown visitor. Gradually the surrounding atmosphere seemed as if it had become filled with sensations, and luminous. Everything about me seemed to rarefy, the mysterious visitor herself becoming more airy and yet more distinct to my sight than before. I now began to feel as one dying, or rather to experience the sensations which I have sometimes imagined accompany dissolution. I did not think, I did not reason, I did not move; all were alike impossible. I was only conscious of gazing fixedly, vacantly at my companion. "'Presently I heard a voice saying, `Son of the Republic, look and learn,' while at the same time my visitor extended her arm eastwardly, I now beheld a heavy white vapor at some distance rising fold upon fold. This gradually dissipated, and I looked upon a stranger scene. Before me lay spread out in one vast plain all the countries of the world - Europe, Asia, Africa and America. I saw rolling and tossing between Europe and America the billows of the Atlantic, and between Asia and America lay the Pacific. "'`Son of the Republic,' said the same mysterious voice as before, `look and learn.' At that moment I beheld a dark, shadowy being, like an angel, standing or rather floating in mid-air, between Europe and America. Dipping water out of the ocean in the hollow of each hand, he sprinkled some upon America with his right hand, while with his left hand he cast some on Europe. Immediately a cloud raised from these countries, and joined in mid-ocean. For a while it remained stationary, and then moved slowly westward, until it enveloped America in its murky folds. Sharp flashes of lightning gleamed through it at intervals, and I heard the smothered groans and cries of the American people. "'A second time the angel dipped water from the ocean, and sprinkled it out as before. The dark cloud was then drawn back to the ocean, in whose heaving billows in sank from view. A third time I heard the mysterious voice saying, `Son of the Republic, look and learn,' I cast my eyes upon America and beheld villages and towns and cities springing up one after another until the whole land from the Atlantic to the Pacific was dotted with them. "'Again, I heard the mysterious voice say, `Son of the Republic, the end of the century cometh, look and learn.' At this the dark shadowy angel turned his face southward, and from Africa I saw an ill-omened specter approach our land. It flitted slowly over every town and city of the latter. The inhabitants presently set themselves in battle array against each other. As I continued looking I saw a bright angel, on whose brow rested a crown of light, on which was traced the word `Union,' bearing the American flag which he placed between the divided nation, and said, `Remember ye are brethren.' Instantly, the inhabitants, casting from them their weapons became friends once more, and united around the National Standard. "'And again I heard the mysterious voice saying `Son of the Republic, look and learn.' At this the dark, shadowy angel placed a trumpet to his mouth, and blew three distinct blasts; and taking water from the ocean, he sprinkled it upon Europe, Asia and Africa. Then my eyes beheld a fearful scene: From each of these countries arose thick, black clouds that were soon joined into one. Throughout this mass there gleamed a dark red light by which I saw hordes of armed men, who, moving with the cloud, marched by land and sailed by sea to America. Our country was enveloped in this volume of cloud, and I saw these vast armies devastate the whole county and burn the villages, towns and cities that I beheld springing up. As my ears listened to the thundering of the cannon, clashing of sword, and the shouts and cries of millions in mortal combat, I heard again the mysterious voice saying, `Son of the Republic, look and learn.' When the voice had ceased, the dark shadowy angel placed his trumpet once more to his mouth, and blew a long and fearful blast. "'Instantly a light as of a thousand suns shone down from above me, and pierced and broke into fragments the dark cloud which enveloped America. At the same moment the angel upon whose head still shone the word Union, and who bore our national flag in one hand and a sword in the other, descended from the heavens attended by legions of white spirits. These immediately joined the inhabitants of America, who I perceived were well-nigh overcome, but who immediately taking courage again, closed up their broken ranks and renewed the battle. "'Again, amid the fearful noise of the conflict, I heard the mysterious voice saying, `Son of the Republic, look and learn.' As the voice ceased, the shadowy angel for the last time dipped water from the ocean and sprinkled it upon America. Instantly the dark cloud rolled back, together with the armies it had brought, leaving the inhabitants of the land victorious! "'Then once more I beheld the villages, towns and cities springing up where I had seen them before, while the bright angel, planting the azure standard he had brought in the midst of them, cried with a loud voice: `While the stars remain, and the heavens send down dew upon the earth, so long shall the Union last.' And taking from his brow the crown on which blazoned the word `Union,' he placed it upon the Standard while the people, kneeling down, said, `Amen.' "'The scene instantly began to fade and dissolve, and I at last saw nothing but the rising, curling vapor I at first beheld. This also disappearing, I found myself once more gazing upon the mysterious visitor, who, in the same voice I had heard before, said, `Son of the Republic, what you have seen is thus interpreted: Three great perils will come upon the Republic. The most fearful for her is the third, passing which, the whole world united shall never be able to prevail against her. Let every child of the Republic learn to live for his God, his land and the Union'. With these words the vision vanished, and I started from my seat and felt that I had seen a vision wherein had been shown to me the birth, progress, and destiny of the United States. Disunion will be her destruction.' "Such, my friends, were the words I heard from Washington's own lips, and America will do well to profit by them. Let her remember that in Union she has strength, in disunion is her destruction." Prophecy of Joseph Smith (March 10, 1844): "Even this nation will be on the verge of crumbling to pieces and tumbling to the ground and when the Constitution is on the brink of ruin this people will be the staff upon which the nation shall lean and they shall bear the Constitution away from the very verge of destruction."
"For years we have heard of the role the elders could play in saving the Constitution from total destruction. But how can the elders be expected to save it if they have not studied it and are not sure if it is being destroyed or what is destroying it?" (President Ezra Taft Benson, Techings of Ezra Taaft Benson, p.619-20 46 ibid, p.623 47 ibid, p.623 48 ibid, p.574 49 ibid, p.574 50 ibid, p.576 )
The Washington one strikes me as a little suspect. First of all, the timing--1859! So this was right before the Civil War. A time when Disunion was a very real prospect, and invoking the stature of Washington himself in support of maintaining the Union strikes me as a powerful piece of propaganda.
Second, this is based on the memory of a 99-year old man?? And he is the sole witness? And why would Washington share this with someone who would have been only 17 at the time?? And this Anthony Sherman--guess what I found when I googled him:
"Anthony Sherman, was a soldier in the Continental Army. However, according to his pension application, written by him, he states that he was at Saratoga under the command of Benedict Arnold at the end of 1777 and only joined the main forces in 1778 in New Jersey just before the Battle of Monmouth."

Patriarch Evans' "Dream" I have seen before, and he himself says that it is not really a dream, but rather something he wrote to make a point:
"I have written the foregoing, which is founded on true principle, under the caption of a dream, partly to instruct and partly to check the folly of reading silly novels now so prevalent."
And since when was a Patriarch authorized to give revelation to the Church?

I'm not going to take the time to dispute all this stuff. I have better things to do, and nobody wants to read it anyway. I will say that there are a lot of second-hand sources and several quotes from people such as David Whitmer who I do not consider authoritative.
It is obvious that some of the Joseph Smith quotes refer to the lack of redress that the Saints received after the Missouri afflictions, and some of the calamities he predicts could easily said to have been fulfilled by the Civil War. And some of the quotes attributed to him come through the prisms of Pratt, Young, and others, often years later, and they add their own spin. They certainly had reasons to be bitter towards the US government that was persecuting them all through the second half of the 19th Century.
This is not to say that there is nothing to this meme of "Constitution in danger, Saints to rescue/defend it". There is something there. Joseph Smith obviously said something about it. But there has been a great deal built upon that by way of interpretation, to suit the times. For Young and Woodruff and all the 19th Century leaders, it was that the US would be punished for casting out and persecuting the Saints. For Benson and others in the 20th Century, it was the threat of Communism. For Packer in 2004, it is "morals and values and the Constitution". Probably same-sex marriage and similar agendas. For others, like George Albert Smith, it seems to just be part of the general warning of the lead-up to the Apocalypse.
I am not saying that these men were not inspired to use this meme as they have at various times. That is the point of having living oracles, right? To apply the principles laid down by Joseph Smith to our current situations and needs?

Great job Mirkwood on putting this together. I read through it all.
Many of these I had read before, some of the others I haven't even heard of.
Like Shiz I believe some of them may be suspect, but there is most definately certain truths being conveyed. Many of which are supported by scripture.
(I also found interesting the description of the account of Urim and Thummum showing the principles of chemistry, geology, and biology. A couple of the statements seemed to hint at somethings I have thought about before.)
Shiz, many of those prophecies have some variation of a warning about the US spending its strength in foreign wars when calamity strikes. Can you point out a period in history when the US has had multiple major overseas deployments at a time when the battle is brought to the shores of the US? While I agree that we should not unquestioningly accept all of those statements as pure prophecy, the fact that there are so many and by reputable people says something.

The first part, maybe you do and maybe you don't. That's up to you.
The second part, I would be interested in reading what you come up with. I think this is a worthwhile subject. It's good that we dig our way to the truth. Once we close our ears, it may be a sign that our foundation is weak.

And, like the Apocrypha, there are some good things in it for those who are spiritually in tune enough to sift through the extrapolations of men and incorrect translations and non-inspired stuff, but The Lord still told Joseph Smith it wasn't necessary to retranslate them or consider them part of the Bible canon...
So, with the exception of D&C 101, unless it was stated by a Prophet of God speaking in the roll as The Lord's spokesman in General Conference, it is not very close to being considered canon, even contemporary to the time it was said.
Good information to be aware of, but certainly no need (IMHO) to brow beat one another over in our striving to live the commandments and keep the covenants we have individually made with The Lord as part of the Gospel.

Cat, what is a reliable method for determining when a prophet is speaking in his role as prophet? Because it seems to me they almost never say "Thus sayeth the Lord". For instance, how do you know that Pres. Benson was speaking as a prophet when he said that, when possible, wives should stay at home? What words were missing when he talked about conspiracies that made it his personal opinion? I think it valuable to be exact on this point; otherwise it would be too easy for the weaker saints to just dismiss everything they don't like as not spoken by the prophet in his role as prophet. Besides, the brethren have a lot of good stuff to say, and I'd venture to say that they're more wrong than right.

The earliest references I find are attributed directly to Joseph Smith and are found in The Words Of Joseph Smith. Darn near everybody else has quoted him.
"The earliest references I find are attributed directly to Joseph Smith and are found in The Words Of Joseph Smith. Darn near everybody else has quoted him."
And I think I said:
"Joseph Smith obviously said something about it. But there has been a great deal built upon that by way of interpretation, to suit the times."
and:
"That is the point of having living oracles, right? To apply the principles laid down by Joseph Smith to our current situations and needs?"

arbilad, I'm not dissin' either side of the discussion. It is probably wise to remember that this isn't a topic worth belittling others over if they don't see it the same way. Both sides look to be getting a little defensive. My point is that the topic is not central or core to the Gospel and how we live it as individuals and members of His Church.

So why do we in our day need a prophecy to tell us the US Constitution is hanging by a thread? The short answer: We have not studied it and are not sure if it is being destroyed or what is destroying it.
Let me tell y'all a bit about myself. As a kid, I had a strong sense of patriotism, and a strong interest in American History and Government (I know y'all are shocked to hear that). In conjunction with a temple trip when I was 13 or so, I was at a temple bookstore and discovered "An Enemy Hath Done This" by E.T. Benson. I bought that and read it over and over again. As a teenager I was as right-wing as they get, a real John Bircher type. LOL I had two big interests: the End Times, and the Coming Tribulation in America. It was my "Gospel Hobby". I know the Brethren have spoken out against that sort of thing. I also got a kick out of having this secret knowledge about the future that ordinary mortals didn't have.
Anyway, to make a long story short, going to college, going on a mission, growing up a little bit, and some other life events opened my eyes to realize that this doctrine just isn't that important for my life, and doesn't really help me live more Christlike. So, yes, I get impatient with it. I didn't mean to sound hostile. I simply think it distracts from more important doctrines, and that it easily becomes a "gospel hobby".

I heartily endorse everyone studying and understanding the Constitution, and what could potentially undermine it. But honest people can disagree on those things.

I really liked this quote.

Interesting. As a kid I had a strong sense of patriotism too. I also had a strong interest in American History, particularly the Revolutionary War period. On my mission I discovered several books on the Last Days and got my first exposure to the Coming Tribulation in America. It never became my "Gospel Hobby". I was however strongly prompted to study the topic. I was even blessed enough to hear Pres. Benson speak to my mission while he was in Philadelphia. On and off through the next decade I would receive the promptings from time to time to go back to the Last Days and study it again. My wife and I were both prompted in 1993 to start our food storage and have worked on it from that point on. My interest in food storage eventually prompted me, in conjunction with my cousin's Emergency Preparedness Specialist calling to build a website on the topic. I never got a kick out of having "secret knowledge", but rather felt sorrow that so many people ignored the counsel of the brethren. I guess that it never became the distraction from other equally important doctrines of the church. The majority of the members I have know who study this topic have not fallen into the trap that you have described. Maybe your experience was different then mine.
I certainly hope that you don't really believe that everyone who studies the Last Days and associated topics becomes distracted "from more important doctrines, and that it easily becomes a "gospel hobby".
I was very much interested in the Civil War from about the time I first heard about it in 2nd grade. I was excited to find out I had ancestry who fought for the Confederacy, even though I imagined myself a gallant Union cavalry officer (okay, maybe influenced by a few John Wayne movies...). For me, the year I was maybe 8 or 9 and we went to visit Gettysburg on vacation, it was perhaps as exciting as for some like going to Temple Square. That fascination was slightly tempered by one of the museums we went through where a rendition of mannikens doing field surgery on injured soldiers was presented... it just about made me sick to my stomach. I never realized that there was more to this (war) than playing cowboys and indians, as it were.
As a teen, though, the fascination with military campaigns and the like still continued though. We stopped at Antietam on the way back from one youth temple trip to Washington D.C. It was quite sobering, as we tried to take in the level of carnage and death that had occured there well over a century earlier in a mere day of battle.
But, the fascination continued. Then, when my recently returned from mission older brother took me to see a movie for the fun of it. The movie was Taps. I know my brother had no ulterior motive, just thinking it may be a nice evening for two bro's. I came out of the movie silent. I don't think I said a thing until well after we got home. Seeing the sheer stupidity and waste of life for something that was not that important had a profound effect on me.
Then, it really hit home to me on my mission in Germany and seeing the still evident scars on the land and in people's lives from WWII that had been over for 40+ years. And then to come across so many members of the Church who had been strong at one time but would refuse to go to church as long as so-in-so went because that person had offended them at one time or the other.
There are things that are more important, and often we individually don't realize how casually we make them as equal to things that are not as important or weighty in the living of the Gospel. Nor do we see how others may feel put off by the ferver we put in those items. It is kind of like speakers or others in Sacrament meeting who feel that unless the talks are perfect with the best quotes and doctrinal expounding the meeting is not worth the time or effort, when the focus of the meeting is to be on the simple ordinance of the Sacrament and our individual renewing of the baptismal covenant and any other spiritual uplifting is just frosting on the cake.
ETA Sorry, forgot I didn't leave the moral of all that rambling! What I'm saying is try to keep things in moderation when it comes to topics that are not central to gospel living, and it will end up being a much better discussion with more general interest and less division into pro or con camps.

If one truly values truth and the gospel, how can they deny the counsels and principles of freedom as taught by the prophets and supported by Gods scripture? Some here seem to think that those who are concerned about the "awful situation" our country has gotten into and its causes are focusing on un- or less important aspects of the Gospel.
An LDS lady whom I advised recently that declaring war is the responsibility of Congress, not the President, wrote me tonite: "I'm learning stuff that maybe I once knew, but have to relearn. What troubles me the most is that people don't seem to care at all. They take all we have for granted."
David O. McKay stated years ago "Next to being one in worshiping God, there is nothing in this world upon which this Church should be more united than in upholding and defending the Constitution of the United States." The discretion in little further public discussion on the issue by Church leaders seems to be understood by some members of this forum, so I'll say no more about that. As I understand scripture and statements by Prophets and Apostles over the years, LDSs are obligated to insist that their elected leaders adhere strictly to their constitutional oaths of office, and should make no apologies for holding them to their obligations. Now compare the voting record of LDS congressmen with the Constitution.
I'll just stick to what I said earlier: honest people can disagree. I view the admonitions to be involved in public affairs and to work to defend the Constitution one way, and a few people here view it another way. Remember, I was a Political Science major. I am all about being involved and being a good citizen. I think that most Americans need to be more educated and more involved. But I also accept the American people as they are, and I happen to think that they are still pretty good people. And I accept that I am not going to get my way all the time in politics, and that if I am going to get anything done, I will have to work with people I don't always agree with, and that change will probably be incremental rather than drastic.
Our goals are not that dissimilar. We both want to see this country prosper and enjoy liberty. We both would like to see a stricter adherence to the Constitution, and less government intrusion into our lives. Our means to those ends are different.

Shiz, I do like that you use your political science degree as an indication of your interest in the subject, and not to claim a higher level of legitimacy in political discussion than those of us who didn't major in that.
