<<An unfinished book by "Lord of the Rings" author J.R.R. Tolkien, which was completed by his son, will go on sale on next month, a newspaper said. "The Children of Hurin", which Tolkien began in 1918, will be in bookshops on April 17, the Independent on Sunday added. The author's son, Christopher, spent 30 years completing the story from the many drafts produced by his father.>>

I'm always suspicious when they "find" additional volumes that an author never finished, or they find additional notes and completed the book. I'm not saying that it's impossible. But it seems just a little too convenient.

I always hope that my children or theirs will finish my stories that I've started, if for some unforseen reason I am taken early. I think this is nice. I recognize it isn't the same thing were it written by me, but hopefully it's better... cuz they care so much. :)

I always wish that someone had finished CS Forrester's unfinished Hornblower book. You get to read part way through it and then all you get is notes and ideas of where he wanted the story to go. I always wanted some closure. I know that another author took Ludlum's notes and made two more Jason Bourne books. I haven't read them yet so I can't comment if they are good or not. When I was a lad I was addicted to the Hardy Boys series by Dixon which was not a real person. A whole series of people wrote those books but I enjoyed nearly every one of them. If it is done right, it might be an interesting read. If he took 30 years it might not be too bad afterall. Has Christopher written anything else though?
He put out a book of Unfinished Tales some years ago. I read it during my teenage years. I think some of the Children of Hurin material may have been included.....
A quick glance at Amazon shows that book is still in print.
Christopher also edited the Silmarillion, though that was pretty much already in finished form. This new book sounds like it has a great deal more of his editing and finishing.

I was always disappointed that Louis L'Amour never got to finish the Walking Drum trilogy, I really enjoyed that book.
