Just came across this, if anyone is thinking of travelling abroad in the near future and does not have a passport.

Passport Requests Flood State Department

There are some significant delays currently in getting passport applications processed due to a backlog of applications that have arisen under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (need a passport for air travel between the US, Canada, Mexico, and the Carribean nations and Central and South American nations).  Make sure you plan well in advance.
