Meeting on the grounds of the former Confederate Capitol, the Virginia General Assembly voted unanimously Saturday to express "profound regret" for the state's role in slavery.
I realize that it does no harm, for the Virginia Assembly to send "symbolic messages" like this, but at the same time, it seems rather vacuous to me. The current crop of lawmakers has nothing to apologize for--they had nothing to do with slavery.

I'm not voting for Ron Paul because it's not expressly prescribed in the Constitution.
So the Emancipation Proclamation, the Civil Rights wars of the 1960's and abolition of Jim Crow are not enough? Good heavens, I fear eventaully white people will have to become slaves to black people just to "even the score" at this rate!
Yeah, I guess that official delegation from Illinois should have never gone to SLC back in April 2004 to deliver an apology for the murder of Joseph Smith and the expulsion of the saints. After all, nobody currently in the Illinois government has anything to apologize for--they had nothing to do with any of it.
It's an olive branch, for Heaven's sake. I applaud the Virginia Assembly for their sensitivity.

I regret that my Yankee ancestors didn't oppress or enslave anyone. I also am waiting for the official apology from the railroad company for taking my great great grandfather's farm. I'm not holding my breath!
