What if your kids wanted to homeschool?

Today I had the wonderful opportunity to teach 12 year old girls in Sunday School. I hadn't planned on going to church, because I'm as sick as a dog right now. But the spirit said go anyway, so I went. Their teacher hadn't shown up, and as the 1st counselor in the sunday school presidency I got to teach them (the president was off teaching another class where the teacher didn't show up). As we were talking as we discussed the lesson, one girl mentioned that she was homeschooled. Two other girls both said that they had asked their parents if they could be homeschooled. One's father said that she would miss her friends too much, so he didn't think it was a good idea. The other's parents just laughed at her.
What would you do if your kid asked you to be homeschooled?

We would definitely talk about it.  Whether or not it happened, and to what degree, would depend on a variety of variables.  But I'm not opposed to it at all.

I've looked into it myself.  Discussions on this forum and elsewhere have been very informative also.

I would look into it.  there are some definite advantages to homeschooling, and a few disadvantages.  If, after consideration and prayer it seemed the best thing for my children, I'd do it.

I think they need the daily social interaction.

That's just me.

I can't imagine any of my kids asking to be homeschooled but one of them probably should be because he will always be socially slow.

Definitely discuss it.

I would want to know why, particularly (a teacher they can't work with, a bully situation, because a 'cool' friend does, because they think it would be less work, because they're bored...).

It is a situation I don't believe we will ever have to deal with.  Our kids love public school, and they have cousins who are homeschooled.  Our kids notice the difference in the intangibles and are glad they have decent schools and public school experiences for the most part.

One of my closest friends since I moved to college was homeschooled in elementary and middle school, and then went to public school for high school.  She was ahead, so she graduated and entered into college when she was 16.  I met her at my freshman orientation, she was the only person who was actually really willing to hold a conversation with me (now I know that it doesn't take much to get her to start a conversation with anyone, but it meant a lot to me after those 2 days of lonliness in a place as hot as heck...literally 105 degrees!).  Socially, she doesn't really has a problem.  In fact, she's very confident and isn't afraid of anyone, and if she is, she'll just talk to them until she isn't.

We are both going into Mechanical Engineering...a pretty hard major.  She's got intuition like no other for the stuff because both of her parents are engineers, although her mom has been a stay-at-home mom since she was born pretty much.  The only thing that I've noticed is that she isn't really able to pay attention in class.  She got so used to learning things herself, that now that a teacher/professor could really help, she finds it nearly impossible to pay attention.  She really needed homeschooling growing up because they moved around so much, and the other kids always had a hard time with the fact that she was younger than them, but more advanced in schooling.

For me public school was good because I yearned for independence.  I know I plan on having my kids in public school unless it comes to a point where it really would be better to homeschool them.  There's a lot I learned about who I am and what I stand for by going to public school.  I hope that my kids will learn to stand up for what they need to stand up for no matter how bad the public school system gets.

Plus the friends that I had that were homeschooled, I ended up tutoring them.  In high school especially I learned how to study in a group, and when I came to college I wasn't doing so well until I found that group to study with, and now I'm doing great.

For me I only see benefits in sending a kid to public school.  Private school may keep the kids sheltered from evil, and may accelerate their learning, but I know I wouldn't give up my public school experience for anything.  I wouldn't go back, for sure, but I wouldn't change anything either.

I've seen some rather poor results from homeschooling from those who tried it in our ward... most often due to what I would consider an "overprotective" mother, but in theory, I'm sure it's really great.
