Read, discuss... and yes, this is indeed in my neck of the woods...
Maybe it actually covers three hot button issues (if you include a local one of the corruption of Detroit City politics... and how the mayor and his agenda have far reaching impacts on the people in the whole area even though they have no voice in electing to the office -- and influence)
If I ever have to move to Detroit, I'm gonna buy a house in Mexicantown.
In my neck of the woods, most product labeling is several languages (not just Spanish), there are streets in my section of town where billboards and window ads are only in Spanish, and there are places to eat where you have to order in Spanish. So it would be just like home, for me. Mmmmm...freshly-made tortillas and Mexican pastries. And where I live, the Spanish-owned businesses have better prices and better service than their competitors. So they get my business.
As for the immigration and security concerns: I think it was disingenuous for Fox News to juxtapose two stories--the successes of Mexicantown with the problems of border security--in order to make the two appear causally related. Agenda-driven journalism, imho.

I love Mexican areas - as long as they're here legally.
Of course, I'm somewhat of a hypocrite. I'll buy tamales in the parking lot of supermarkets from those old grandmothers whose granddaughters are translating for them. But they're sooooo good.

Mmmmm...tamales. Now why can't the cannery have those in wet pack? If I gotta survive for a year on food storage, I should at least have something to make it worthwhile, right? A year of chicken chunks? I'm not sure I'd wanna even stick around for that.
