Blizzard

In Colorado right now we're getting quite the blizzard. It's hard to open the screen door to let the dog out. I can barely see my car for all the snow, and it's an Explorer that's slightly taller than your average explorer.
It's amazing how much snow there is.

My wife's sister lives in Denver and she's indoors, her husband was expected to go to work... If something happens to him, I'd be tempted to sue...

My brother had to go to work today at CU Boulder. Some genius decided that since they had finals, they had to keep the school open. Even though most students couldn't make it in. Once they finally did close the school, it took my brother over 2 hours to get home, when normally it would take 25 minutes.

Your wife sister must be a real piece of work to expect her husband to go into work.  I would sue her too if something happened.

That's hardcore.  We get an 30 min of freezing rain here during the night and every school in the metroplex is closed the next day.  The universities are always the first to close--sometimes they'll close based on just the forecast.

It's all over the news. Supposedly you have gotten over 2 feet of snow, and 1000+ people stranded in the Denver airport.

I'm so glad I have a "Don't travel" policy during the holidays... People who do that are crazy...

Of course, I'll take snow over ice anyday.  Ice=no traction.  Snow=some traction.  The problem is, our local school district doesn't see it that way.  If they don't see snow on the ground schools won't close even if it is slick as can be.  The local university and college are more reluctant to shut down but seem to do it on a reasonable basis.

A few years ago (well, I was in the 5th grade) we had a huge snowstorm and the entire city was closed down for a day. I think we had at least 5 or 6 inches! They used to cancel school when we got an inch, but after that storm they decided to get one of those machines that sprays the roads to prevent ice.

Now where I live we are lucky if we can justify wearing long sleeves..although I wear a jacket/sweater every day just out of rebellion because December is supposed to be cold. Arizona is silly.

The aftermath of the blizzard has been fun, fun, fun. I finally got out of my driveway last Friday. But on Sunday, as a result, the transfer case on my Explorer broke. I decided that it would be better to get it towed and repaired on Tuesday, after Christmas. Well, they were still towing people out of snow banks, so we waited many hours for a tow truck to show up. When they finally got there, and got my car onto the bed of the tow truck, the hydraulic piston broke. They didn't repair that until after the garage closed, but they said they would drop it off at the garage and put the key in the drop box. Which seemed fine. But today we found out that it still wasn't there. They dropped it off, for some strange reason, a block west of where it was supposed to be. With the keys still in it. They had the correct address, business name, and directions. Luckily the mechanic from the garage found it, and hopefully soon I'll find out how much the repair will cost. But there's going to be a complaint made to AAA about that towing company.

Oh, and they tell us that another blizzard is now on its way.
Of course, the local government will almost certainly, come summer, come up with some circumlocution to explain why we're still in a drought. City halll could float away due to flooding and they'd still claim we're in a drought.

yeah...I was watching the news this morning and the cold spell/snow that we are getting now in Southern Arizona (well, rain unless you are lucky enough to live in higher elevations) is what's supposed to turn into that blizzard. Well, hopefully we steal enough snow that it doesn't get too severe again in Colorado!

We've had thunderstorms and heavy rain in Fort Worth all afternoon.  And now the tornado sirens just started going off.  Time to get everyone huddled in the bathroom for a while.  Later dudes...

Looks like the storms have moved on through.  You know, living in Texas will give me something to talk about with my grandkids, "I remember the great Christmas Tornado back in ought-six..."

If you guys would quit polluting the air so much then we wouldn't have so much global warming which would mean fewer snow errr, never mind!

'Twas a snowy night In Tucson: Rainy evening turns into rare desert blizzard

I thought you might appreciate this Arbilad. Apparantly almost 2 inches of snow falling in 1-2 hours of snowfall is a blizzard in Arizona. Granted, I've never known it to snow in Tucson before, (other places in southern Arizona definitely, but Tucson is quite a bit warmer). Anyway, totally exciting, plenty of snow days for everyone but the U of A...even the community college got a snow day, but I still had to walk the icy sidewalks to get to my 8am class.

For those who may no longer be able to appreciate snow because it comes so often and just becomes icy slush that remains forever, here's an idea of how snow is received in places where snow rarely falls:

  • People in apartment complexes all run outside and start jumping around and chatting with neighbors they never met before, engaging in snowball fights and other fun snow activities.
  • Everybody heads to the open places around town to tromp around in the snow.
  • Some trees fall because they have never had to withstand any weight other than monsoonal rains, which just drip right off.
  • Traffic is ridiculous because no one knows how to drive when the streets are icy, so accidents happen causing traffic jams, and the brakes on the semi's freeze causing even more jamming.
  • Random people might run and jump into the pool just because they can (not me, but I did watch it happen!)
  • People go throughout the streets shoveling the snow and putting it in their trucks to save for later
  • It takes most of a yard's worth of snow to build even a semi-decently sized snowman.
  • When you are on the phone, people who have lived here their entire lives don't believe that it's snowing until you convince them just to look out the window!
  • People who have never dealt with snow have no idea what to do with their car is "frozen over" (aka ice on the windshield)
  • People who have half a clue use spatulas from the kitchen to scrape the ice off of their windshield.
  • Everyone is super giddy because as opposed to 70 degree weather we get to enjoy a wintry wonderland, and those fun snowy carols come back even a month after Christmas because we finally get to see white!
  • By noon, the only snow remaining is the snow that was in the shade all morning, the sun is bright, but everyone is bundled up and acting lazy because it's a snow day!
  • Dancing in the snow is totally fun!

In a pinch, you can use a credit card to scrape your windshield.  Unless it's below zero.

Silly, Bok... Anyone who's anyone carries a spatula with them everywhere they go... at least that's the trend in Arizona.
