War?

Hi,

I received this from an acquaintance in Israel:

It seems we come right up to the brink of war with first Syria and Iran then we pull back, it is like a cat and mouse game.In the mean time Hamas continues to shell our civilian population with no condemnation from the world at large, the UN is forever condemning Israel every time we act in self defense.

What most dont know is we have been within hours even minutes of all out war on several occasions.

It's been almost 40 years since I worked for several months on an assignment in Israel, and 31 years since I was last in the country.  But I still take some interest in what is happening there, and get a weekly email from an Israeli investigative reporter.

It seems to me the UN is anathema in Israel, having almost always promoted the Arab agenda and undermined Israeli sovereignty, especially in key areas of Jerusalem. Consequently, the Israeli Jews loathe the UN, even though many of the UN foot soldiers, the grunts, tend to be far more sympathetic toward the Israelis than toward their antagonists.  It seems the goal of the UN and certain powers that be in America and Europe is to shrink Israel to an indefensibly small state by "land for peace" withdrawal from the occupied territories of the 1967 and successive wars and battle, and from key military bases on strategic high ground.

A couple of years ago I spoke with a former LDS colleague who together with his wife spent a year in Israel on a church mission.  They were forbidden to proselite, but he told me they served in small branch in the Galilee area and provided transportation for people to attend church services.  A friend who a few years back spent some time in Israel said  "one can still sense the God of Israel hovering over the land. I have no doubt that He intends to redeem Israel someday--and believe me, it needs redemption."  My sentiments exactly from having lived and worked there.
