New Phone Scam

I got a call today from someone claiming that I owed them money. I didn't remember owing this company money, but they had my personal information including bank account number and social security number. I looked up on the internet the phone number that they were calling from, because frequently you can ascertain whether a company is legit or not by whether there are any complaints associated with their phone number. Their phone number came up clean. Then I did a search on their company name. There are lots of complaints associated with them, and they keep changing their phone number. They use an internet phone service where they can just keep buying different numbers, and therefore it's harder to find a trail of complaints.
Anyway, after a bit more researching I do not owe them money, but I'm still unhappy that they somehow have my social security number and other information. I guess it's a good thing that my bank went under because the bank information they have now is old. But it just goes to show never blindly pay money to people who call you up, even if they have personal information about you.

Arbi, when your bank went under, what became of the funds you had on deposit with that bank?  What did it take for you to regain full access to those funds?

I got my money just fine. Things haven't gotten that bad yet. Still, one has to wonder just how much farther the credit of the FDIC will extend with a record number of bank closures and no end in sight.
