Russia invades Georgia

Russia has sent troops into Georgia and their airplanes are bombing a Georgian military base. The area in question wanted to break away from Georgia, and so Georgia responded by sending troops in. They happened to accidentally kill some Russian "peace keepers" that were there.

We are allies with Georgia. The area in question has about 40,000 residents, right smack in the middle of Georgia, many of whom are Russian citizens who live there on passports or Visas. Russia has been supplying their separatists with military supplies for a while now and Russian planes are bombing Georgian military facilities. This is a convoluted mess.

Russia has now opened a second front on this war, and Russia is saying that Georgia will never get South Ossetia back.

Ok, I'm not the smartest knife in the crayon box--whatever that metaphor is.

Why is this significant to the USA?  Is it because Georgia is a democratic state?  Do you think that we should or will get involved?

Georgia has some major oil pipelines running through it. If they get destroyed, then the price of oil have one more reason to continue skyrocketing.

Another reason to quit being so dependent on foreign oil.

Have you guys seen that email about ANWR? Like where it is and what it looks like up there? I don't see what the big gripe is. Already all the steel type plants have moved overseas, we're gonna' be over a barrel during a war when they've got us by the *** when we can't buy raw materials and stuff. Wasn't that a big saving factor during WWII?

Washington Risks Nuclear War by Miscalculation
by F. William Engdahl --  Financial Sense Editorials
August 11, 2008

"What is playing out in the Caucasus is being reported in US media in an alarmingly misleading light, making Moscow appear the lone aggressor."

Russia looks like a crocodile to Georgia, but Georgia looks to Russia like the cats' paw of the West"

"Most in the West are unaware how dangerous the conflict over two tiny provinces in a remote part of Eurasia has become. What is left out of most all media coverage is the strategic military security context of the Caucasus dispute."

"The trigger for such a war is not Georgias right to annex South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Rather, it is US insistence on pushing NATO and its missile defense right up to Russias door."

and according to CNN, we're sending things to Georgia to aid the battle.

I'm not a "sky is falling" kind of person, but this one is freaking me out a bit.

If you'd quit watching the news, you wouldn't get all "freaked out." imslow.gif

The war in Georgia has freaked me out more than other news lately, for some reason.

http://www.glennbeck.com/content/articles/article/196/13897/

Glenn Beck had the president of Georgia on yesterday (Wed, 8/13/08), and it is just awful what Russia is doing. They are butchering those who disagree with them, who want a free democracy. They are bombing hospitals, schools, roads, infrastructure, civilian apartments, and airports all over Georgia, not just the disputed place.  Their "peacekeepers" are destroying everything they can.

Beck believes this is the Evil Empire rising up again, using all the old KGB tactics.

Russia went in there on the flimsiest of excuses - they didn't like that we were selling the Georgians arms and advising them. Oh, and they want to be part of Nato.
In a way, we dodged a bullet there. If Georgia had already joined Nato, we'd be treaty bound to send troops over there and help them. We'd be at war with Russia.
Of course, it's still possible that the US will send troops there. I hope we don't. It's a tragedy what's happening in Georgia. But we really can't afford a full out war. All our troops are overseas and no one is at home to defend us.

See... my grandpa came from Russia and I went there on vacation once... so I kinda' like the place.

And our 1/2 Arab mare has Russian bloodlines... some of the BEST Arabian horses come from there.... if you're into athleticism...

That Kremlin is so cool with the onion deals on top... the fur hats... and the way those men can do that squat-kick dance! Hello! Now that takes some serious quads!
