State of California lays off 22,000 employees

I'm glad that I don't work for the state of California. They just laid off 22,000 state workers, and 200,000 more will be paid federal minimum wage now.
California has had serious financial problems for a while, and it's possible that it will only get worse.

CA sure did the bright thing when it decided to fund billions of dollars in stem cell research.

Yeah, all that free medical care has to be paid for by someone.
I did some quick and dirty figures, and if they didn't spend two billion on stem cell research in California, they could give every one of those state workers now getting minimum wage $10,000 apiece. Or they could have not laid off those 20,000 workers and given each of them a salary of $22500 (considering that the total cost of an employee is usually about twice what you pay them). I'm sure there's other pork in the California budget.

I applaud when the beurocracy actually trims the fat, even if you could have thought of "fatter" portions to trim. At least this is a step in the right direction.

As an aside, investing in basic science research often yields more money than it costs.

It's time for California's Governor to simply say, "We're done!" If you are illegal. Don't show up at the ER and don't expect our doctors to treat you for free.
If you are illegal, your kids can't go to school here.

If he would simply take a stand, crime would go down and they might actually have some funds left over to run the state.
