Looks like we might be in for a tomato recall

http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/06/03/salmonella.tomatoes.ap/index.html

An outbreak of salmonella food poisoning first linked to uncooked tomatoes has now been reported in nine states, U.S. health officials said Tuesday.

At least 17 people in Texas and New Mexico have been hospitalized. None have died, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Thirty people have become sick with the same Salmonella Saintpaul infection in Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Idaho, Illinois and Indiana. CDC investigators are looking into whether tomatoes were culprits there, too.

I knew there was a reason why I didn't like tomatoes!

Wow, I wonder if we had that. During those dates we had raw tomatoes and we thought we got hit with a stomach bug!

Gah, I'm sorry to hear that, Cukes.

So, would washing your tomatoes prevent the infection? It's just on the skin, right?

Not sure, but cooking them should.

I'm not sure either, but I think salmonella is a systemic problem. Comes through the roots or leaves...?? (Washing doesn't help.)

I am a freak about washing my produce. Those tomatoes were good and washed and we still got sick. Now...possibly it wasn't the tomatoes, but it could have been.

Where did you hear this, coocoo?  That just seems so unlikely.  In eggs, I understand it is passed on to the egg from the hen... but for a plant to infect its fruit through the roots and leaves.... I don't buy it.

Uhh... dunno. Just thinking of people trying to "wash off" the pesticides on their strawberries and not realizing it's systemic, not something "sprayed on" the surface.

I also find it hard to believe that people don't wash their produce, but hey! Maybe people don't!

Hey, a solid lead. They actually found salmonella on a jalapeno. They might have been barking up the wrong tree with the tomatoes.
