Weak economy good news for the makers of Spam

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,359541,00.html

"Sales of Spam that much maligned meat are rising as consumers are turning more to lunch meats and other lower-cost foods to extend their already stretched food budgets."

Spam with a raisin sauce is not half bad, as long as there is plenty of raisin sauce.

Would this be the wrong place to mention that I like spam?

My mom used to make Spam sauteed (should that be in quotation marks? Can Spam be sauteed?) with kidney beans and pineapple. Sounds awful, but it's actually quite good.

Sautéed Spam with lots of raisin sauce, with Delmonico potatoes and green beans.  I can still remember the taste from over 50 years ago.

SPAM is a type of canned, processed pork luncheon meat made by the Hormel Company.

According to Hormel: ''The ingredients are ground to a medium-coarse texture. Spices are then added to enhance the product's natural flavour. After the blending process is completed, the meat is mechanically filled into cans, sealed, and cooked in a ret ort oven. Upon leaving the retort, the cans are dried and transferred to the packaging area. A caser then automatically unscrambles and distributes the cans into the feed section, forms the corrugated tray, and loads the cans into each tray. the packed cases are conveyed through an automatic code dater and a shrink film tunnel. The sealed cases are then transferred to the storage and warehouse area to await shipment.''

Wow, lundbaek. . . that makes Spam sound pretty vile and un-food-like. Sort of like Mechanically Separated Chicken, or American Processed Cheese Food. Mmmmm. . . ground ingredients and cheese food.

Notice it just says "pork luncheon meat", which most likely means lips and butts, and anything that fell on the floor.

I'd worry more about the embalming fluid that goes into it, or whatever they use as a preservative.  If people ever knew what really goes on in Congress and in processed meat factories, there would be a revolution.

Didn't Teddy Roosevelt already take care of that?

My mom used to make Spam when we were really little. I think she just fried a slab til it got a little crispy and voila Spam steak. I think you should try it, Coco. You know you want to add it to your food storage. nana.gif

If the can is the same as corned beef, I don't think so. I still have the hammer marks in my counter where I went ballistic on that fetchin' corned beef can. YAAAAAAAA!!!! angered.gif

No, Spam is not Coco-proof. Unless you are more challenged than you've previously mentioned.
