The Voice Of The Lord by Gerald Lund

This was a great article. I was really interested to see the second witness confirming things in calling the stake presidencies. I've had similar experiences with my current calling. I'm going to have to read this whole book.

Hearing the Voice of the Lord by Elder Gerald N. Lund

Editor's note: This is an excerpt from Hearing the Voice of the Lord, a book on personal revelation that was written by Elder Gerald N. Lund.

The Lord has given us two different statements on what His voice is like. The first is that it is still and small and whispers. The second statement was given through the Prophet Joseph to Oliver Cowdery before the Church was organized.

Oliver Cowdery arrived in Harmony, Pennsylvania, in April 1829. He had traveled from Palmyra to investigate for himself whether the reports he had heard about Joseph and the gold plates were true. The Lord gave him the confirmation he sought (see D&C 6), and then told him that he was immediately to begin assisting Joseph in the translation of the Book of Mormon, serving as his scribe.

A few days later, Oliver expressed a desire to also have the gift of translation. In response, the Lord gave through Joseph what is now Doctrine and Covenants 8. That revelation included a simple and yet remarkable statement on the nature of revelation.

Yea, behold, I will tell you in your mind and in your heart, by the Holy Ghost, which shall come upon you and which shall dwell in your heart.

Now, behold, this is the spirit of revelation; behold, this is the spirit by which Moses brought the children of Israel through the Red Sea on dry ground (D&C 8:23).

In the mind and in the heart. That is a key concept that requires further exploration.

Looks cool. The process for coming up with a new stake president reminded me of something a former bishop once said to me, "Inspiration doesn't happen in a vacuum."

Hey, did his name start with an M, cuz I had a former bishop that said that same thing!

Nope. I'm guessing what he said might be a bit of a saying. shrug.gif

A bit of a saying. Right. He was the first and only bishop I ever had that said that. Most of them might actually think they get revelation in a vacuum. ashamed

I dunno. It sounds like a saying, though, doesn't it?

I mean too, if enough people say it, it's definitely a saying. But what's enough? confuse.gif
