Prisoner suing for losing weight in prison

A morbidly obese man accused of murder is suing his jailers for not feeding him enough. He's lost over a hundred pounds during the 8 months he's been in prison and he's upset.
This is just incredibly stupid in my opinion. Does he think he's going to get sympathy because he's down to 308 lbs? Shouldn't he be thankful for losing the weight? Does he honestly like being fat, or is he just upset because he can't continue his gluttonous ways?
While I'm all for being sympathetic towards fat people (being one of them myself), I honestly cannot understand where this guy's coming from. I can't imagine suing because you're getting closer to a healthy weight.

On the flip side, I can already see the "Prison Diet" books coming. giggle.gif

You've got an abundance of time in prison. Sounds like this guy is spending his time griping and suing. It's certainly not uncommon.

I like the comments at the end of the article.

"On this man's original charge, did he eat the victim?"

That is really odd, most prisoners gain weight in jail or prison because of the abundance of food. I wonder if he contracted Tuberculosis or HIV?

I see several possibilities for why he's losing weight. He could find the food unappetizing. Or he has a high metabolism and overcame it with severe gluttony to become morbidly obese. I sort of suspect that if they were just not feeding him enough that other prisoners would be complaining too.

I agree w/the first comment at the end of the article that if he didn't like the food, he should have thought of that prior to taking the life of someone else- This man may feel hungry due to being bored- he is 20, hopefully he can occupy his mind by studying something.

Hope he keeps losing weight- at that weight, he doesn't seem to realize that he is at high risk for stroke, heart attacks, severe joint problems and an array of other diseases and problems that may come to those w/high weights. Who will pay the bill??

So I did some quick and dirty math and came up with this: the guy was being shorted approximately 1500 calories a day to lose that kind of weight in 8 months. That sounds rather mean until you realize that the guy likely needs 6000+ calories a day to maintain his weight of 413 pounds. Is it reasonable or safe for the prison to give him that many calories a day? Bah. Also, this would explain why an average person could gain weight in prison, but this guy would lose. From what I understand, they pretty much give the same food to everyone. (This guy's complaints aside. Bah again, I say.) So the prison is feeding this guy an average of 3000 calories a day (and I bet the guy eats anything else he can.) Starving? Hardly.

The "So, your kid is going to prison" pamphlet put out by the Utah Department of Corrections is an interesting read.  Things like "Inmates are given an opportunity for breakfast" and "inmates are offered lunch".  Translated, this means "nobody here cares if you eat or not - we're not going to hold your hand, we're not going to force feed you.  All the melodramatic crap you used out in the world about hurting yourself to manipulate people into doing your bidding ain't gonna fly here".

Prison is an eye opener to many a mamma's boy, and many a mamma's boy mamma.
