Speeding Poll (esp. for Mirk)

With some of the discussions we have had on this forum about things like illegal immigration, I was curious about this one....

Maybe we ought to include a poll that says, "How many of you have ever gotten a speeding ticket?"
Or any other moving violation ticket.

No tickets yet but I tend to go about three miles over in the highway. If you don't you actually block traffic and have people riding your tail. I don't need that sort of excitement.

I'm somewhere between the last two. I don't get annoyed, and I don't really "like seeing someone else do it", it's just a fact of life where I am. The average speed on most roads where I live is above the posted limit. Driving the limit results in a bunch of irate motorists bunching up behind you - occasionally one of them will be a police car.

It's a very common occurance to follow along behind a highway patrol car who is driving over the limit.

That said, there are many times when I'll drive the limit or lower, and will pull over to let people go by when there's no way to legally or safely pass.

So, what does this all mean?
12. We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.

And there shall also be many which shall say: Eat, drink, and be merry; nevertheless, fear Godhe will justify in committing a little sin; yea, lie a little, take the advantage of one because of his words, dig a pit for thy neighbor; there is no harm in this; and do all these things, for tomorrow we die; and if it so be that we are guilty, God will beat us with a few stripes, and at last we shall be saved in the kingdom of God. (- Satan's doctrine put out by false churches).

I dunno.  I'm thinking that strongly worded scripture doesn't really apply to speed limits.  AOF #12 certainly does, and my lawyeresque/argumentative teenager brain doesn't provide any real way to get around it, and yet I have a feeling that driving the speed of trafic, when safe, isn't much of a violation of it.

Dunno.  What I do know, is that after 15 years of trying to slow down to a safe speed, I've finally enjoyed some success at it, after getting that last ticket with my kids in the car.

In my province, it's a generally known fact that unless you're 10 over, a court will throw out that speeding ticket, so most people go about 9 over. (Oh wait, I just realized Dyany was talking in miles, not kilometres. I was wondering why anyone would hyperventilate about 5 km over - that's about 2mph)

Ok, I meant 10 km over. And I admit that like most of the populace, I often will go nine over. However, that's just a summertime thing. Winter roads call for the speed limit or below. I've had one photo speeding ticket, from a Saturday morning when I was distracted and missed the change from 60 to 50.

However, (insert blushing graemlin here) British Columbia has a "no tolerance" stance towards speeding, and when we're travelling there, I back off to the speed limit.

DH, on the other hand.... Yeah, he's a bit of a speed demon. Although I must give the man his due, he's got mad winter driving skillz.

We have an understanding that I don't bug him about speeding tickets, and he won't say anything about my library fines. Granted, the library fines are a lot less, but I get them more often than he gets tickets. wink.gif

I go back and forth. I really try to drive the strict speed limit. Sometimes when I'm tired, I drive a little faster to get home sooner (yeah...that sounds dangerous; try figuring out that logic). Sometimes when I'm running late, I drive a little faster to make up time. Often I'm on a long one-lane road, and I drive a little faster to appease the cars behind me and keep crazy passing to a minimum. But I feel guilty in every instance.

This is one issue, where I think it required listening to the spirit. For some people, it just is not that big a deal, and 5 over isn't going to make any difference. In my experience, it's an issue that does matter for me. Because I feel guilty and think it's wrong, I'm going to be judged by how I act on my conscience.

As for other people...I don't even notice. I mean, I notice that I'm the only car in my little section of the road, since everyone's driven ahead, and I notice as cars fly by me. It just doesn't occur to me to think anything about how fast they're going or what they're doing.

(By the way...in my anecdotal experience, when I'm driving the speed limit, I hardly ever hit many stop lights. It's when I'm pushing the limit a bit that I hit every single one. shrug.gif )

I have not written a speeding ticket in a long time. When I was writing speeding tickets I generally did not write them until about 13 over. Some guys write them at 5 over. The 5 over idea is generally making an allowance that a speedomoter could be a few MPH off.

My pet peeve is people who run red lights and stop signs, who don't have insurance, or register their cars. They get tickets.

I usually go 4 over. Unless someone is riding my tail, then I go exactly the speed limit.

Oh, I don't really care if someone is doing 5 over... I do care if they are doing 5 (or more) under and I'm stuck behind them, though. frustrated.gif

I have a couple of exceptions to my 4 over rule: not in school zones, construction zones, bad weather or if there are bad road conditions.

What is the fastest each of you have driven? We will assume that the statute of limitations has run out as to WHEN you drove that fast biggrin

The fastest I have driven is a not-too-impressive 93 mph. And I was on my way to a hospital to have my kid's fingertip stitched back on. I would have driven faster, but MrHic found a way to be taking care of the wounded child AND watching my speedometer.

I've caught myself going 108 mph twice. I slow down immediately. Both times were in my BMW and because the road was nice I didn't notice how fast I was going. I am very lucky that an ossifer didn't clock me going that fast or I would have needed bail money.

I normally go about 4 to 5 MPH over just to stay with traffic.

If traffic is going the speed limit, so do I.

105 or 110 in a little hatchback on a high-speed chase with 6 or 8 cop cars outside of American Fork.

I've driven exactly 100 mph, which was what the governor on my Saturn SL1 would allow. That was in my young and stupid days. Now I typically drive exactly the speed limit, although sometimes about 5 mph faster. Very rarely I go a lot faster.
In fact, I'm pretty sure that my car speedometer is actually a few mph faster than what I'm actually going, so mostly I'm probably going slower than the speed limit.
Once I was driving someone else's car, and the speedometer went out. I didn't know how fast I was going, so I erred on the side of caution. I'm sure that I royally ticked off some other drivers that day.
Remind me to check my insurance and registration before ever driving through Salt Lake County. I almost never run a stop light, so I'm safe there biggrin.gif

I got up to 128 MPH coming into Northern Utah early one morning. None of other four people in the car noticed, they were probably sleeping or cuddling. Jessica has got some pep in her. I probably could have gone faster, but at this point I could see a couple miles ahead there appeared to be an SUV that looked oddly state patrol like, which it was. Always gotta keep an eye out for the fuzz.

Speeding, it really depends on what road I'm on. If I'm on the highway and it's a long stretch I might go 10 over. Around town, residential areas, local freeways I go the speed limit.

If you are speeding and then see a cop, don't put on your brakes, just take your foot off the accelerator. Braking causes your car to lurch forward and the cop if he's watching can see that lurch. My dad, who is a retired Los Angeles County Sheriff, taught us kids a lot of tricks!!!! But I have gotten speeding tickets because I was also taught to be honest with the officer if I do get pulled over. Depending one where I was sometimes I did drop my dad's name/his dept. I did talk a cop in OR out of giving me a ticket, I was on my way back home to MI and going down a steep incline and he pulled me over to going 15 over the limit. I told him that I was not used to mountains because I had lived in "flat" MI for over 5 years and the speed going down hill got away from me! He let me go with a warning, nice guy!

I used to be a creature of the 90's. 45 minute daily drives to and from Denver did that to a guy. I've fought my lead foot the same way most people try to fight their weight - unsucessfully. Two things changed my behavior:

* Got a speeding ticket with my kids in the car wondering why a good guy was being rude to their super daddy who was always right and perfect in every way.

* Got pulled over and chewed out for 15 minutes by a county sherriff who seemed legitimately tired of scraping idiots off the road into buckets. Despite his anger, every single point he made that was completely and totally valid. And it was all based on his personal experiences and common sense.

I don't think I've ever gone much over 85, maybe 90 at the most.
I'm one of those people who's afraid if I speed I will get caught and get a ticket.
Thus, I have never gotten a speeding ticket.

But, I do drive 5 to 10 miles over the speed limit on occasion.

What annoys me is people who speed and weeve in and out of traffic and don't use signals.
If they get stuck behind me I deliberately drive the speed limit just to annoy them back.
I know, that's wrong. Maybe that's what leads to road rage.

Back in the 90s when I was young and stupid I drove a 1984 Mercury Cougar with a 302 CID engine, 5.0 liters, Electronic Fuel Injection that we had purchased from my grandmother. I think my parents thought since grandma drove it that it wasn't a fast car. Boy where they wrong. I think I hit about 112 in that but I believe the speedometer stopped at 108.

Then my other grandma had a Mercedes Roadster from the 70s that was very, very hot. I got that one up to about 120 one time.

I did both on lonely county roads in the middle of nowhere but it was still really stupid. At those speeds I could easilly have lost control of the vehicle and my life. I would never drive that fast again unless someone was trying to kill me.

five miles over the speed limit is not speeding, it's going the correct speed.

I went out with this guy a couple times who had a Toyota MR2 - this was in '89, I think. Anyhoo, my girlfriend and I wanted to see how fast it went. (The details escape me on what possessed this otherwise level-headed person to let me take his car for half the day or whatever.) We hit about 105 coming down Parley's Canyon.

Now that I'm a settled-down, respectable quiet Mom, I don't speed anymore. pray.gif
