Ann Coulter endorses Romney

Ann Coulter, known for her controversial way of expressing things, has decided to endorse Mitt Romney for president. What think ye, Romney supporters? Is this a benefit to his campaign, are you ambivalent, or do you think that this is a negative for the campaign?

Most "endorsements" are really meaningless, IMHO. If it is an organization that exerts some sort of control over it's members (like unions), then all it means is that they will do their darndest to incent (ergo make) their membership vote in a bloc for said candidate. This is essentially the same thing as saying "let us think for you and tell you how to vote." People who think for themselves generally don't care about endorsements.

Beyond that, most endorsements are more harmful to a candidate IMHO. The candidate (if successful in bid) will end up somehow being beholden to that endorser / organization later on, and often will end up having to add whatever political / emotional / cultural / societal / spare / lost baggage that endorser has with them to their reputation.

So... isn't it funny how so many people and organizations that are guilty of it acuse LDS people of voting in a bloc for a candidate when we don't... there is no overlord power or theocracy that tells us to chose this or that candidate.

If I were running for president, I'd be happy that I had personally convinced Ann that I was the right person for the job. But I would pay good money to get her to keep it to herself.

I liked that article. thumbsup.gif I've heard the name Ann Coulter, but couldn't really tell you anything about her.

Ahhh yes, Ann Coulter.

I know who she is because I got sent a clip a while back of her talking about Canada. She expressed the opinion that since we've got a bunch of water, oil, timber and other natural resources that the US wants, and a tiny little population and military compared to you, that y'all should just march right up here and take over.

So I'm not really a fan.

Good article, though.

Ann Coulter seems to be full of herself, at least when I've heard her "discussions" on TV.

Judging from the text of her column, Ann Coulter decided on Romney long ago, but has not given too many clues about that. Perhaps she was also concerned that her endorsement would turn off as many as it would encourage.

But perhaps she feels now that it couldn't be much worse for Romney, and decided to heck with it, she would do as much good as she could for him.

She may be right about that, because the biggest rap against Romney is that he's not conservative enough, and it might help him with conservatives to know that one of their favorite columnists is on his side.

I don't think that courting independants and fence-sitters first is the best idea. Get the true believers first, and once they are in your corner, then it's time to try to appeal to the people who don't have as much ideological depth.

Dianoia,

I haven't seen the article that you're referencing, but to me it would make a difference to know the context. If the whole thrust of her column was that Americans should strong-arm Canada for its resources (which I do not think she would do), then I would find that repugnant. However, if it was a sarcastic/silly remark meant to ridicule another powerful individual, group, or nation that takes from others in a manner that is not as clearly vile to the establishment (which would be right in character for her to do) then I won't worry about it too much.

This would be her normal over-the-top rhetoric. Sometimes it helps to illustrate a point to use a bit of hyperbole rather than sticking to the academic format complete with cross-references and footnotes. And she probably goes too far at times. But I'm never bored while reading one of her columns.

He also got Ross Perot's endorsement today as well... Not sure what to think of that, but it is interesting how diverse a group he's managed to get behind him.

Mitt could baptize her when he is elected! Then she could be a lot less full of herself and as she would stop writing those satirical pieces about annexing Canada because she would be busy doing Visiting Teaching with The First Lady...

Just imagine, having the power of the Secret Service to get in to see all those sisters who who don't want any visits... Secret Service shows up before Ann and Ann, and what are they going to do? Say they aren't there to the Men in Black? bwa-ha-ha! devilish.gifwink.gif

I did do some searching to see if I could see what Ann Coulter had said about Canada, and I saw that she was angry with Canada because she did not agree with the way they were dealing with the US. She said that they were lucky that the US didn't roll over them.

I think it would be fair to say that her comments were sarcastic and rude.

As I said, she can be over the top. It would have been very out of character for her to make temperate, balanced comments explaining her frustration with Canada or anyone else.

If I were a Canadian, I don't know whether it would have made me mad or make me laugh.

At one time it would've just made me laugh, or shake my head in disbelief. It's pretty obvious she's outrageous to get a reaction.

But I guess I'm not as casual about those kind of comments as I used to be. I noticed on a bread forum that I'm on that some of the British contributors would occasionally joke about the US "coming back to the fold." Finally, someone asked them to knock it off because after a while it just wasn't funny anymore.

That's kind of how I feel. I'm not mad, just a little worried. I assume most comments are all in good fun (and I enjoy the banter that goes on here at Bountiful), but there comes a time when you start to wonder why movies and songs and comedians and idiots keep talking about us being the "51st state."

Maybe it's a secret combination. wink.gif

ETA: and I appreciate your comments, Randy. Thank you.

I love Ann Coulter.

She's hilarious and usually so spot-on right that it makes people uncomfortable. Whether they are willing to admit it or not.

Her delivery is no holds barred---a girl after my own kind.

All that and she's beautiful, too.

Ms. Coulter also posted her article at her website... http://www.anncoulter.org/

Not too shabby a piece of writing.  Kind of mild compared to when I've seen her making commentary on Fox News...

Ros, beauty is in the eye of the beholder... She has some good looks, but does nothing for me... wink.gif

Here's a list of Ann Coulter quotes by topic.  Canada, you did not get any sort of special or preferential treatment from her.

I figured as much.

I'm with you, LM, I'd pay her to keep her opinions to herself. But you gotta admit, she makes good copy.

For me, this is a positive!

I love Ann Coulter. I suppose it's because I sometimes shoot my mouth off and say things that I think, that are probably better left unsaid.

Is that wrong?  I thought that was one of Ross Perot's campaign promises.

I already refer to Canada as Northern Montana anyway.
