What do you guys think of this? I'm still processing it.

"Papers, please!" barked the austere looking Homeland Security Officer, his two soldiers unlocking the safetys on their machine guns, just begging you to challenge them. All you wanted to do was walk go for your daily walk around your neighborhood like your doctor advised you. As you explain this to the man, he handcuffs you and demands to know where this, "doctor" resides who would so rebelliously advise US citizens to engage in such seditious behavior. "Don't you know that Washington state was expelled from the union two years ago for failing to enforce the law. Unfunded mandate is not a valid excuse. And we all know what happened in New Hampshire, who again got to live up to the second part of their motto. We are serious about these things. If you want, we can implant the mark somewhere on your body."
I think all libertarian minded people should hate this loss of freedom.
I just turned 50 so I will be exempt... but I think I am okay with some sort of ID that is more secure, I haven't seen the one I can totally support... but... I see a different side of this issue... the ease with which people trying to pull a fast on crossing state lines and applying for IDs has to stop.
I have a friend who is in favor of more communication between states at the very least because there is a man that is waiting for sentencing in the drunk driving death of her 24 yo daughter... The man moved from state to state over the last 10 years to avoid previous "police harassment issues" with DUI convictions in other states...(those were his documented words under oath... for his reasons for moving ever 1.5 years.) Each time he was cleared for moving in one state he went somewhere else to "start over"... This case I am aware of is his 3rd conviction for a major accident while intoxicated... but only the first time he actually killed someone. He has put 2 people in wheelchairs though.
I have another good friend who has been the victim of identity theft 3 times in 7 years... The process of regaining your own identity is a horrendous ordeal... she is VERY MUCH in favor of more security across state lines for ID's. Each of her experiences the person using the ID was an illegal that then applied for an ID in a different state than she lives in, so there was no red flags. She is a 4th generation American, and her 3rd great grandfather came from Spain in the late 1800... She has a rich family heritage that is Hispanic... Her family has for many years owned a famous business... and one reason she is such a prime target is that she is 30-something, her name is fairly common, and it's Hispanic... So she is now on her 5th SS # since becoming an adult.
There must be some way to secure identities without taking away all rights, no?
The idea behind it is reasonable, but with every "reasonable" idea of the government, it is always subject to abuse and therefore it is inevitable that it will be abused.

In my lovely state of Washington you can get a Driver's License and even can vote and all you need do is show a utility bill as proof of residence. We don't even need passports to go to Vancouver Island.

I'm not discounting the story - as the human race has tons of examples where they arrange something similar for themselves.
I just want to point out two things: 1- The slippery slope fallacy is exactly what it claims to be. A logical fallacy. No, just because the alphabet is in that order, does not mean if you have A, B, and C, then X, Y, and Z will soon follow. It may well be that C is the best place to be, and we never hit D.
2- Before this scenario occurs, we've got a functional, entrenched system of checks and balances to invalidate first. Take a look at the "police state" thread - if the guy wasn't such a hothead, da man would be facing lawsuits and shortened careers.
