weird

so last night I'm playing games with three of my boys.

All at once my left upper lip, 3 of my front TEETH on the upper left side start feeling numb. Within 20 minutes my entire upper lip is swollen to three times it's normal size... I mean I look really grotesque and my right kidney feels like I'm trying to pass a stone. One thing I am certain of, I do not have a tooth problem

I took some benidryl last night thinking that perhaps it was an allergic reaction of some sort and it did nothing. My wife says that it looks a little better but my upper lip just feels huge and I think I still look horrid. My kids say its worse. Top left front teeth are still numb. I feel like my cheeks and eyebrows are starting to swell now and the pain in my back right side is getting worse. Other than that, I think I'm

anyone with medical background out there with any ideas?

Well, I don't know if Organist is around. I think that you should call your doctor's office and see if they think you should make an appointment or go to the Emergency Room. Take care of yourself!

I'd be taking a trip to an urgent care facility or ER if I were you. Ya never know.
Sounds like an allergic reaction to something, but why would your kidney ache? On the other hand, you could have two separate things going on...

I would go get checked out. Could it be a blood clot? A mini-stroke? What meds are you on?

You didn't happen to accidently give yourself a shot of novacaine (sic?) did you, Doc? wink.gif

If you've ever passed a stone, Mahonri, you know what it feels like... If you start vomiting, screaming, unable to move, can't get relief, get into an ER.

Get it checked out.

Acute numbness of left upper teeth and lip, followed in 20 minutes by swelling of left upper lip and right kidney pain.  Wife believes it looks a bit better, but you and kids think it is worse.  Possible swelling of cheek and eyebrow areas.

My first advice would be to go to see a doctor in person. I must admit I haven't heard of this particular constellation of symptoms. Even phone advice is notoriously inadequate, because many key things may be missed, especially for odd groupings of symptoms, like this.

Have you had kidney stones before? They are described as the worst pain a person can experience, worse than child birth. In order to avoid them in the future, you can keep your urine diluted by drinking more water.

Sudden swelling is often allergic, as has been mentioned. You can be allergic to almost anything and the allergies can develop at different points. So, check what you ate, everything you came in contact with, and all of your medications. If you have access to some epinephrine (an epi pen), then you could retry rubbing all of those things on your lips to see if they result in a similar reaction. If the reaction is worse this time your throat might start swelling, so you might not be able to breathe.

Sudden loss of sensation could be a transient ischemic attack (TIA or mini-stroke), except new definitions for TIAs are that is has to be less than 1 hour, rather than less than 1 day. TIAs may feel swollen, but that is just the numbness. Is it actually swollen or just feel swollen? Or is it drooping? If someone saw the swelling, it is unlikely to be a TIA.

Are there any blisters? Herpes virus (cold sores variety) may be in the differential, as could many other less common things or abnormal presentations or common things.

I think you should contact Dr. House.

I think you should call your hometeachers and ask for a blessing! It's not like the Lord doesn't like giving us blessings, and it's not like you don't have a problem.

Better safe than sorry.  A friend of ours very recently had a kidney stone go unnoticed long enough to cause a terrible infection that's had her down for almost 2 weeks now, even though the stone was "blasted".

Most of the swelling has gone down and the pain in my right back has subsided.

I did Benidryl and motrin all day. I'm almost certain that it was an allergic reaction to something. Now I'm afraid to eat anything I had yesterday. I have an epi pen at work... for just in case, but I don't have one here at home. Guess it's time to get one.

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers. I don't go to a physician unless I'm feeling that it's really life threatening.

So you have to be actually dying to go to the doctor? Gee whiz Mahonri, what if you had been? weirdface.gif

And yeah, the epi-pen at work doesn't do you a whole lot of good at work when you're at home! idea.gif
Oh, and the pain in you right side, can come and go. If it is a stone it will hurt depending on where it is.

I would avoid eating what you had yesterday too. If you have an epi pen, then you must have experience with serious allergies and hopefully know the danger signs if you need to go to the emergency. I do think that the pain you described does not sound typical with allergies though and that is a concern.

We have an Oral Surgeon in our ward who basically says the same thing. Great guy otherwise. I have a brother-in-law who is internal medicine... same thing. And, I've known a number of doctors over the years in various wards we've been in. I think you folks who are health care providers just don't know how to take the same advise you give to your patients... wink.gif I personally wouldn't want a doctor / dentist working on me who is fighting more than the sniffles...

With a girl on immunosuppressives, I agree with Cat, but I'm a little stronger about it. When a doctor is at work and he's sick, it plain pisses me off.

Glad I'll be feeling better by Wednesday morning.

At 5AM tomorrow, the elders will be by and I'm taking them up Squaw Peak in the dark to catch the first rays of 2008 light.

Should be fun
