First it was Canadian trash being exported to Michigan filling up our landfills...
Now they are crossing the border and dumping their old clothes...
When will the madness end, and things return to normal like a strong U.S. dollar that buys like double a Canadian dollar and Americans crossing the border for the sheer pleasure of hearing Canadian accents and the taping of an episode of The Red Green Show...

Oregon takes Washington's garbage all the time... railcars and railcars of it. It's nice having such a nice healthy and green state... and giving all our crap to the Oregonians...

I'm of the opinion that anything anyone says about the size of US landfills needs to be put into context.
I challenge anyone to load up Google Earth and zoom around and find any landfill from any country just by zooming and looking around - no cheating. If you happen to know where one is in your town, go zoom to it, and then start zooming out. Let me know what elevation you are at, before it looks like a miniscule pinprick.

More seriously I can make out the Davis County Landfill in Layton at 142 km, but your right, it serves most the county and compared to the city it's in is quite small. And I have to zoom into 34km to make out the waste incinerator nearby.
And the Largest Landfill in the world, NY's FreshKills landfill (which was closed in 2000 then reopened for the WTC debris), I can make out where it is from 169km but to actually see the outline of it requires zooming into 65km. So excellent point.
On the topic of remote sensing (not sure how LM made the connection, but oh well, it is an interesting topic), anyone who is trained adequately can identify all kinds of neat things from aerial photos.
I had a couple classes in it in college. I earned a BS in Geography, emphasis in Cartography. I thought I would end up working for the DMA... then Desert Storm happened, and the program at BYU got impacted as the equipment destined for students to learn things got earmarked for the military (you know, to program cruise missiles and what have you)... then the war was over and the military started cutting back on civilian workers and services (like DMA) courtesy of Slick Willy Clinton.
I can't do the Google Earth thingee at work... But on MapQuest aerial photos, I can bring up a land fill that is about 10 miles from us to the 150ft resolution (zoom level 14), and as well as one we always drive by on I-75 on the south side of Detroit metro area.
